Angela Chase of 'My So-Called Life' and 5 Other Deep TV Teens

by Mike Moody, posted Apr 26th 2011 11:00AM
my so-called lifeWith Snooki, Paris and those glitzy 'Gossip Girls' skankin' up the tube, it's nice to know that 'My So-Called Life''s sensitive and smart grunge girl, Angela Chase, has returned to TV.

What's that? You have no idea who Angela Chase is? And you've never heard of 'My So Called Life,' which began airing on the Sundance Channel last night and will continue every Tuesday at 9PM. Well, stop texting for two seconds you pretty young thing and I'll tell ya all about it ...

'My So-Called Life' was a beloved and acclaimed TV drama from a strange and wonderful time called "the '90s." You might have heard of the '90s; it was a time when we had to watch our favorite shows when they were on (because who wanted to program the VCR, really?), people could actually see Nirvana perform live, and people still wanted to see Metallica perform live. It was a joyous time, but being a teen in the '90s could be rough, what with everyone using their parachute pants to smuggle guns and Walkmans into school every day. Luckily, Angela Chase, played by Claire Danes, was there to share our pain.

Angela was smart, introspective and sensitive, and she helped pave the way for a number of deep and clever young TV ladies that followed. In celebration of Angela's return to the small screen, here's a list of five smart young female characters from the past several years of TV history.

'Parenthood' season finale - 'Hard Times Come Again No More'When Adam Braverman starts screaming and shouting in a rage on 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET on NBC), it's not the easiest thing to get him to stop, or even listen. Christina has one sure-fire method, but it's not a strategy she can do very often, if ever again.

While trying to find a lost retainer in the trash, Adam discovers a positive pregnancy test. As he's been struggling with Haddie losing her virginity and beginning a sexual relationship, he immediately assumes that her boyfriend has gotten her pregnant.

As any father would be, he is enraged and comes into the house ranting and raving about it to Christina. "Okay, wait a minute," she says when she realizes what he's holding in his hand and the conclusion he's reached.

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 6th 2011 2:42AM
First time? 'Parenthood'Things with Haddie and Alex may have gone to the next level on 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET on NBC). Or they may not have. Prom night is a magical experience for teenagers, and lots of feelings and emotions get stirred up. It's knowing which ones are genuine and which are byproducts of the euphoria of the evening that is a challenge.

The young couple had decided to wait until the time was right, and in the hallway of the hotel, Haddie was feeling something. "I feel like right now is the right time," she said to Alex.

"I don't want you to feel pressured just because you know it's prom night and your friends got rooms," Alex said, proving himself a gentleman. Many young men would simply take the invitation for what it appears to be and move on to the next step.

Max Has Temper Tantrum on 'Parenthood'On 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET on NBC), Max's Asperger syndrome wreaks some havoc on what's supposed to be a carefree day of father/son bonding.

Adam and Max are just about to ride the Velocirator roller coaster when an announcement is made that it needs repairs. Everyone is forced to exit, and the ride will remain closed the rest of the day.

Max won't leave. "You said we would ride the Velocirator as many times as I wanted," he whines, frustrated with the sudden change of plan. "You took me out of school ... We changed everything about the day so we would ride this! We have to ride it!" Max storms off yelling, "It's not fair!" and runs screaming through the amusement park.

'Parenthood' - 'Do Not Sleep With Your Autistic Nephew's Therapist'Adam may have started his argument with Crosby on 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET on NBC) from a position of righteous indignation. After all, from his point of view his brother has simply fallen into his old womanizing ways and now he's disrupted Max's behavorial therapy. But, as we've seen time and again, Adam's temper can get away with him and get him into trouble.

This time it got him shouting and screaming so loud that Max came out to find out what was going on. In doing so, he learned something no one was prepared just then to talk about.

After struggling with difficulties in his relationship with Jasmine, Crosby found sympathy and understanding in the arms of Gaby. And then they found a lot more, which didn't please Jasmine, Adam or anyone really.

The Bravermans hire the socially awkward man behind "Amazing Andy's Wonderful World of Bugs" for Max's birthday party. But Andy has some ground rules.

The maximum number of party guests: 25. "I have kind of a big family, and then his whole class is gonna be coming. So can you stretch that?" asks Adam. Nope. Another rule: "No clapping will be tolerated."

Kristina notes, "There's gonna be kids here -- there's going to be clapping." Andy says it is "very bad for the bugs." He then asks to use their bathroom and ends up taking a shower.

John Corbett Plays an Alcoholic, Absentee Dad on 'Parenthood' (VIDEO)

John Corbett Is Seth on 'Parenthood'On 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET on NBC), Sarah Braverman's ex (played by John Corbett) finally rolls into town. It would seem like an excellent opportunity for the rocker/absentee dad to visit his teenage kids Amber and Drew. But the recovering alcoholic is hesitant, and doesn't give Sarah any advance notice of his arrival.

Seth later explains his presence to her, saying, "I got a couple gigs in town over the next few weeks." She's incredulous -- and hurt. "You're here for gigs? And you didn't even call me, at least, to let me know?"

"I know that I screwed up a hundred times in a hundred different ways, and it probably doesn't matter than I'm beyond sorry," Seth says, choking up. "I really am. I wanta be part of Drew and Amber's lives, whatever it takes."

by Aimee Deeken, posted Feb 2nd 2011 8:30AM
Adam Gets Stoned on 'Parenthood'The world suddenly looks very different for the ever-responsible Adam Braverman. His boss isn't so bad after all, he tells Crosby on 'Parenthood' (Tue., 10PM ET NBC). In fact, visiting his office was a "mind-blowing" experience. As Adam goes on and on and on about work, his brother figures something's up.

Crosby checks Adam's eyes and asks "Double Rainbow" if he is stoned. No way! He does appear to have the munchies, though. Crosby spies a lollipop Adam has been holding the whole time. His boss gave it to him. "Do you know what an 'edible' is?" inquires Crosby. "Buddy, you're high." Adam bursts out laughing (further proving Crosby's diagnosis).
