The Shop Scores Secretariat's Horseshoe on 'Pawn Stars' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Sep 6th 2011 6:00PM
Secretariat's shoe on 'Pawn Stars'On Monday's 'Pawn Stars' (Mondays, 10PM on History), a customer brought the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop what he said was a horseshoe worn by Secretariat. If it were a genuine item, it would be a real catch for the guys at the shop, but it needed to be authenticated. So Corey Harrison and the Old Man brought in their expert to check it out.

The customer had a letter signed by Penny Chenery, Secretariat's owner, and the expert said he could establish that the letter had been sent from Chenery's daughter's house in New York. The shoe also had marks consistent with the brand of horseshoe that Secretariat had worn. The big test, according to the expert, was whether it was a race shoe or a farm shoe: race shoes are aluminum and farm shoes are steel.

Oxygen Ready to Cancel 'The World According to Paris'?

by Alex Moaba, posted Aug 24th 2011 2:10PM
Paris Hilton is used to things going her way, but 'The World According to Paris' may just be going away.

According to a report in Vulture, Oxygen plans to cancel the poorly-rated reality show after its first season.

The hotel heiress's show struggled to gain an audience from the get-go, averaging just 400,000 viewers per week. Perhaps a sign of trying economic times, the hijinks of a billionaire glamor-queen just didn't have the same mass-appeal as they once did.

Hilton generated headlines recently for reasons that were related to the show's failure. She abruptly walked out of an interview with 'Good Morning America's' Dan Harris after he asked if she was worried about the show's ratings, or that her cultural relevance may be fading. After walking out, Hilton returned to finish the interview.

Porsche Engine Owner Disputes Expert Mechanic's Assessment on 'Pawn Stars' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 16th 2011 6:20PM
The owner of a Porsche engine and expert mechanic Danny Koker on 'Pawn Stars'Rick Harrison trusts his experts more than he trusts his potential sellers. That's the way he has to run his business on 'Pawn Stars' (Mondays, 10PM on History). That reality came as a shock to the owner of a Porsche 911 Carrera engine., when Danny Koker, Harrison's expert mechanic, said the engine might be damaged.

Koker saw some surface rust, and deduced from the fact that none of the compartments were closed that there was also likely damage inside the engine. "What's going on on the surface is going to be going on, to an extent, inside," said Kokel. "And that's the unknown." The engine's owner didn't like that and flat out called Kokel's assessment wrong, saying it was a good engine.

Rick Tests Out a Revolving Cannon From the 1870s on 'Pawn Stars' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 9th 2011 3:15PM
Rick Harrison tries out a Hotchkiss revolving cannon on 'Pawn Stars'When Rick Harrison got his first look at the Hotchkiss .37 millimeter revolving cannon on 'Pawn Stars' (Mondays, 10PM on History), he said it looked "like hellfire and damnation." Anyone facing down the weapon when it was used in the 1870s might have felt the same way. Harrison was looking at the cannon as a potential investment, and got to try it out with live ammunition.

Harrison turned the crank and fired the weapon at a bunch of water-filler barrels, hitting the targets with a force that impressed him. But it was the last barrel, rigged with explosives, that was the clincher. When Harrison hit it, the barrel exploded into a high cloud. Rick was giggling like a school kid the whole time.

Massive 'Stark Trek' Collection for Sale on 'Pawn Stars' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 2nd 2011 6:19AM
'Pawn Stars'Hardcore 'Star Trek' fans had to be salivating at the collection that walked into the shop on 'Pawn Stars' (Mon., 10PM ET on History). The owner had a massive collection of figures of varying sizes, and many of them were signed by the stars of the various shows and movies.

Corey brought in an expert to appraise it after hearing the $14,000 opening offer from the seller. After the appraisal came in at $8-9,000, the negotiations began.

The owner tried playing on Corey's sympathy by telling him he has a wedding to pay for, but Corey wasn't playing that game. "It's not my issue, man," he said. "You can get married for 99 cents in the Prius right down the street."

Rick Surprises the Old Man With a '57 Chevy for His 70th Birthday on 'Pawn Stars' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 12th 2011 5:15PM
Rick buys the Old Man a '57 Chevy on 'Pawn Stars'Rick Harrison is used to picking up old items on 'Pawn Stars' (Mondays, 10PM on History Channel). Usually, they're a lot smaller than the '57 Chevy 150 he bought for the Old Man, his father Richard Harrison, who's part owner of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas where the show takes place.

Rick did a good job of setting up the surprise. As they walked through the shop where the car was being held, Richard said, "Rick, there's some nice cars here. You could have got me one for my birthday," and called him a "cheap ass" for only springing for biscuits and gravy. But when they rounded a corner, they were met by a couple dozen people, bunches of balloons, and the classic car, beautifully restored.

Corey Monteith Has a Record Deal, 'Real Housewife' Writing Advice Book & More TV News

by Jean Bentley, posted Jun 23rd 2011 6:40PM
Glee, Cory MonteithOf all the Gleeks, Corey Monteith is probably the last you'd consider for a solo record deal.

Yet the man otherwise known as 16-year-old Finn on Fox's 'Glee' talked to Parade magazine about his solo deal with Columbia Records in an article due out this weekend.

"I have a solo deal with Columbia Records. So it's about, do I want to release an album, when can we do it, what kind of album should it be, how should it be released and marketed and what's the right timing? Do I have time to do it?," Monteith told the magazine. "It's all about questions."

Then again, Monteith is a talented drummer, so perhaps his potential album would feature less singing and more drumming. Would you listen to a Monteith-only record?

Six Shows That Don't Match the Cable Channels They're On

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 26th 2011 10:00AM
Pawn Stars on Lifetime?Over the last week, I've been talking about the concept of channel drift, when a channel strays away from its original reason for being.

In a way, almost every cable channel has drifted in format. HBO only showed uncut theatrical movies at one time; now they're more known for original series than they are for the uncut movies. One of the by-products of channel drift is that you can identify shows that make you scratch your head as to why they're on a particular network.

These could be shows that have held on for dear life as the channel it was on changed formats, or it could be a show that a channel wanted to test out in order to expand its audience. In a few cases, corporate synergy made for strange bedfellows, allowing channels to rerun shows from corporate cousins that don't seem to fit.

In all of these cases, their presence on their particular channels make a person scratch their heads. But in a lot of cases, they're not going anywhere.

Lawrence O'DonnellLawrence O'Donnell's show on MSNBC debuted in its new time slot Monday night to signficantly higher ratings than his predecessor, Keith Olbermann, managed.

According to The Wrap, audience numbers for 'The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell' were boosted by Olbermann fans and curious viewers tuning in to see what all the fuss was about.

O'Donnell's sudden move from 10PM ET to Olbermann's former time of 8PM ET came after Olbermann announced his abrupt exit from MSNBC on Friday's 'Countdown.'

O'Donnell had about 50 percent more viewers than Olberman's show averaged in the same slot. However, according to MSNBC President Phil Griffin, the ratings target for O'Donnell is the same as it was for Olbermann: Bill O'Reilly.

Five Shows for the Bad Economy

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 19th 2010 4:00PM
'The Apprentice'Countdown to Festivus on Dec. 23: On the fifth day of Festivus, TV gave to us ... five shows for the bad economy.

Unless your name is Scrooge McDuck and you literally carry bags full of money everywhere, you've had to do some serious tightening of your purse strings recently. (Metaphorically speaking, of course, because we just established that you don't have an actual bag of cash.)

Television networks have been tapping into that collective thriftiness this year with seemingly countless shows about bargain-hunting, turning trash to treasure, and pawn shops. For some reason, there are lots and lots of shows about pawn shops. Here are five shows for the frugal viewer.

Why We Watch: 'Pawn Stars'

by Don Reisinger, posted Jul 5th 2010 2:00PM
Pawn StarsWhen it comes to reality television, the History Channel rarely comes to mind. The channel typically focuses on the major events of World War II, the Kennedy Assassination and top Revolutionary War figures. But on Monday nights at 10PM ET, it's taken over by a reality juggernaut that offers the most entertainment and educational value of any show on television: 'Pawn Stars.'

If you're not watching Pawn Stars, you're missing out. The show profiles Rick Harrison; his father, The Old Man; and his son, Corey, as cameras follow them around their Gold And Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. Some humor is thrown in with the help of Chumlee, Corey's best friend who helps manage the increasingly popular pawn shop.

A network rep declined to comment, says the report. The show follows the Harrison family in and around their Las Vegas-based pawn shop.
