'America's Got Talent' Backstage Report: Stevie Nicks Feared Piers Morgan Would 'X' Her

by Michael Maloney, posted Jul 28th 2011 7:00AM
Stevie NicksIt's not just the amateur and semi-pro acts that appear on 'America's Got Talent' that fear they'll receive a dreaded, ear-piercing strike from trigger-happy judge Piers Morgan.

Musical guest Stevie Nicks confided to AOL TV that she, too, thought Morgan might give her a red X when she was performing on last night's results show.

Nicks was there to promote her upcoming tour (last year's 'AGT' winner Michael Grimm will open for her) and she sang two songs including one from her latest album 'In Your Dreams.'

Morgan not only didn't not buzz Nicks, he even gave her a standing ovation.

'America's Got Talent' Backstage Report: Will Steven Retchless Change Who He Is?

by Michael Maloney, posted Jul 21st 2011 7:00AM
Nick Cannon and Steven RetchlessIt's not a given that there will be a "wild card" episode of 'America's Got Talent' so ejected acts can come back and try again to compete for the $1 million prize, but eliminated magician Landon Swank is reason enough to have one this year.

The judges had to decide tonight between Swank and Smage Bros., the motorcyle stunt team, as to which act would make it through to the semi-finals. After judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne split their votes between the acts, it was left to judge Howie Mandel to break the tie -- and he chose the Smage Bros.

"I don't want to be the person responsible for sending someone home," Mandel sighed to AOL TV after the taping. Still, he feels he made the right decision.

Piers Morgan Remembers His Rough First Meeting With Sharon Osbourne (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 11th 2011 5:15PM
Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne on 'The Talk'Dainty. Shy. Well-heeled. These are descriptions that do not apply to Sharon Osbourne. Just ask Piers Morgan, who described his first meeting with Osbourne Monday on 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS). The two work together as judges on 'America's Got Talent', but according to Morgan, Jerry Springer needed to be led away from the scene of their first meeting for fear it might scar him emotionally.

The first meeting was a dinner, and Morgan said Osbourne had had a glass of wine or two, and ended up sneaking up behind him. "It ended up with her coming up behind me," he said, "in front of all these executives from NBC, strangling me, trying to kill me, and screaming, 'You're just a Simon Cowell wannabe.'"

Landau Channels the Rat Pack for His 'America's Got Talent' Audition (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 23rd 2011 12:32AM
Landau, 'America's Got Talent'Susan Boyle taught us to never judge a book by it's cover. And while we'd say Landau doesn't have quite as unexpected a look on 'America's Got Talent' (Wed., 9PM ET on NBC), he still managed to surprise us.

A guy in a laid back casual dress style rocking dredlocks might be expected to belt out reggae, light rock or even smooth jazz, but we're pretty sure nobody was expecting a flawless Rat Pack big band sound to come out of him.

Even more impressively, Landau admitted he'd never before auditioned for anything. And yet his vocal control and poise on stage was so flawless it was as if he'd been singing professional his whole life.

You're the kind of reason that we like doing the show," Piers Morgan told him. "Because you come out of nowhere. You've never auditioned before in your life and you have a natural God-given talent."

Zuma Zuma Brings Fearless Acrobatics From Kenya to 'America's Got Talent' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 8th 2011 2:49AM
Zuma Zuma, 'America's Got Talent'The audition rounds continued on 'America's Got Talent' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC), bringing the best, and worst, talent from across the country. In the case of Zuma Zuma, the reach went far beyond the United States border.

The acrobatic troupe hailed from Kenya, but their impressive tricks were truly universal. We've seen jump rope tricks and we've seen human pyramids and even contortionists, but in Zuma Zuma we had all three in one, and more.

They're a diverse bunch, incredibly charismatic, hyper-talented and fearless. "I've never seen a tumbling act with no mats," Piers Morgan said. "I think people will like for you."

Howie Mandel on 'The Talk'Howie Mandel has obsessive compulsive disorder and an intense fear of germs; he's been known to avoid handshakes and contact with strangers like the plague. Tuesday on 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) the hosts catered to his special needs by greeting him dressed in red hazmat suits.

"Backstage I was thinking, what am I going to do?" he said. "Are people going to try to hug me? So I'm always concerned. This is the best show I've ever done."

Lauren Alaina Tells Piers Morgan 'America's Got Talent' Turned Her Down Twice (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted May 27th 2011 4:37AM
Piers Morgan and Lauren Alaina on 'The Tonight Show''American Idol' runner-up Lauren Alaina stopped by 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC) and revealed some shocking news about her previous attempts to enter a TV singing contest.

Host Jay Leno and fellow guest Piers Morgan began by asking Lauren about her relationship with 'Idol' champ Scotty McCreery. After insisting that they're just friends, Lauren summed-up the situation: "Everyone wants us to like each other but we just can't seem to do it!"

Then, discussing this week's 'American Idol' finale, Morgan spoke from experience as a veteran competition show judge and told Lauren: "I thought you were the better singer."

And that's when she landed the zinger. "I tried out for your show and didn't get it. Twice!" As Morgan reeled in surprise, she repeated that yes, she auditioned for 'America's Got Talent' -- not just once, but twice -- and "I didn't make it past the first round."

Piers Morgan Invites Arnold Schwarzenegger to Apologize on His Show (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted May 26th 2011 4:45PM
Piers Morgan on 'Access Hollywood Live'Arnold Schwarzenegger's transgressions over the years have cost him his marriage, and have been a considerable public embarrassment for the former California governor. Piers Morgan is ever-helpful, so today on 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC), he extended Schwarzenegger an invitation to offer a "mea culpa" on his show 'Piers Morgan Tonight.' He also explained why Hugh Grant is banned from the show.

"If he [Schwarzenegger] wanted to do a mea culpa on my show, I would recommend he do that," said Morgan, "because I think that there's a power of being honest and open about these things which, if you try and cover it up and try or run, it's not going to work."

Kit Hoover said Morgan's recommendation was that Schwarzenegger "pull a Hugh Grant," though Grant is barred from 'Tonight' for having suggested that all English tabloids should be banned from existence. Morgan used to edit two of those papers and took great offense at Grant's comments. So Grant will have to find another show on which to apologize to Morgan if he wants to get back in his good graces.

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2011 10:50AM
Chelsea Handler, 'Piers Morgan Tonight'Chelsea Handler talks a lot about her love of dating "black guys" on her own talk show, so it makes sense that the topic came up when she was on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (Weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN). However, she said her relationship with 50 Cent was little more than a fling.

"I was just sampling kind of the atmosphere and seeing what was out there," she said of that time. "And I'm satiated."

It was all fun and games, until Piers Morgan asked her about her picture on the cover of her new book, 'Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me.' "Airbrushed?" he asked of the black-and-white image.

Osama Bin Laden's former sister-in-law Carmen Bin Laden was on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN). She talked about her notorious surname and why she never changed it, even though she has renounced everything Osama stood for and sympathized with the U.S. after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I realized earlier on, for myself and my daughter, that there was no escape from that name," she explained.

"Changing it, people would just say 'Oh well, you know they were Bin Laden, they changed their name,'" she continued. "I thought it would be much better to explain where we stand, where our true feelings and our values are."

Legendary TV personality Sir David Frost was close enough with Princess Diana to have her be his son's godmother. So during his appearance on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weekdays, 9 PM ET on CNN) he was asked what his good friend would have thought about her son's marriage to Kate Middleton.

"I think that she would be thrilled with the choice he's made . . . And I think she would inevitably in the circumstances also -- besides being thrilled -- be filled with the most marvelously irreverent jokes, cause she always was."

Sadly, Frost didn't reveal what any of these jokes would have been.

Brit Jane Seymour Appreciates Kate Middleton's 'Commoner' Status (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 26th 2011 2:00PM
As the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton nears, you'll be hearing more and more about how Middleton is a 'commoner.'

Jane Seymour, who will be covering the wedding for 'Entertainment Tonight,' was on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weekdays, 9 PM ET on CNN), where she and Morgan discussed how being a "commoner" is far from being the insult it would seem.

"Everybody loved [Princess] Diana so much, so to have her eldest son marry a commoner, marry one of their kind, Kate, is very, very special," the British-born Seymour explained.

"People in America tend to think the word commoner is sort of insulting, but it's not at all," British citizen Morgan added. "It's actually -- I think people in Britain are really proud that William has chosen as his wife someone who hasn't been born into pageantry or royalty. She's from an ordinary family."

Carol Burnett Talks About the Anonymous Backer Who Helped Launch Her Career (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 21st 2011 2:30PM
Carol Burnett has had a legendary show business career which, she told 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weekdays, 9 PM ET on CNN) is partly thanks someone she barely knows.

In 1956, Burnett was student at UCLA when her professor asked her to perform at a black-tie function for credit. After she was done, she began stuffing hors devours into her purse, so she could take them home to her grandmother.

Suddenly she felt a tap on the shoulder. But instead of reprimanding her, the man who got her attention complimented her performance, and asked about her future plans. When she said she wanted to go to New York to pursue a career in theater, he made her a startling offer: $1,000 to help get her relocated there.

As the title makes apparent, the book explores the sex lives of our founding fathers and presidents.

"Who was the most sexually promiscuous president?" Morgan wondered. Flynt replied, "It's a toss-up between William Harding and John Kennedy."

Flynt then agreed with Morgan that Kennedy's personal extra-curricular activities would have been eventually exposed and "discredited" his presidency if Kennedy hadn't been assassinated.
