The Nine: Take Me Instead
(S01E06) The people who don't like this show anymore (after the pilot) don't know what they're talking about. Are they expecting some sort of big conspiracy plotline? Something supernatural? A big mystery to be unveiled at the end? Do they expect something darker because of the bank robbery/flashback device the show is using? Do they expect the entire show to be set in the bank? They're watching the wrong show. This is a character-driven drama, period, and a damn good one.
They're into hour two of the hostage drama (in the flashbacks), and we get to see how they came to decide who should be the hostage released from the bank...
NBC announces late-night poker show
If you thought that the poker craze had finally run its course, NBC would like to disagree with you. The network has announced a new late-night poker show called Poker After Dark. Beginning January 2nd, the hour long show will air Monday through Friday at 2:05AM. On Saturday there will be a one hour recap called "the director's cut." The format sounds similar to many of the other poker shows currently on television. A group of the world's top pros, all miked of course, will compete for a $120,000 jackpot. And if you watch poker on TV, you can probably already guess the names that have been announced for the series. Those include Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer, Jennifer Harman, Gus Hansen, Erick Lindgren, Chris Ferguson, Doyle Brunson, and Phil Ivey.

(S01E10) The two anchors that do the 2am West Coast update are stuck in Pittsburgh because of a snowstorm, which means Dan and Casey have to give up their night in Atlantic City to do the show. So they put together a staff poker game.
Meanwhile, Natalie is mad at Jeremy for ditching her the other night and playing tennis with a movie star, and she plans on making him pay when they play poker. Dana confronts Sally about the way she's going to produce the 2am update, and Isaac thinks he's shrinking.
The Five: Current TV obsessions
If you're like me, you go through these phases where you get obsessed with a certain TV show. Maybe it's because you've never seen it before, maybe you haven't seen it in years, or maybe it's summer and you're looking for good things to watch. Below are five shows that I currently cannot get enough of, and why.
1. Lingo (GSN). Like Joel and Rich, I'm a game show geek. And while I watched this one here and there a few years ago, I've been watching it every single night lately. It's not a great show, but I like the simplicity of it, and Chuck Woolery is a quirky host. I still don't get the co-host though (Stacey a couple of years ago, now it's Shandi). Oh, she's hot and friendly, but what exactly is her job? She sits in front with a keyboard and controls the board? I doubt it. Many times you'll see her say something like "let's start with an N..." and she'll press a key, but the letter has already shown up on the board! So what exactly is her purpose? At least Vanna actually turns letters.
I do like the way Shandi says "Lingo balls" though.
The Five: Best sports to watch on TV
1. Baseball: This sport was really made for television. It's slower than other team sports, perfect for those warm summer nights, a cold drink in your hand, maybe a breeze coming in the window as you watch. And unlike other team sports, the pace gives the viewer time to figure out their own strategies for the game (hockey and basketball are too fast, and football has too many players doing too many things at once for the average Joe).
What's on tonight: America's Got Talent, Blade, Project Runway, Mythbusters

- NBC has a new, two hour America's Got Talent at 8.
- FOX has a new, two hour So You Think You Can Dance at 8.
- Also at 8: TCM has two suspense movies: On Dangerous Ground, with Robert Ryan and Ida Lupino, followed by Killer's Kiss.
- At 9 on CNN, Larry King has another hard-hitting interview, this time with Jon Bon Jovi.
- Discovery has a new Mythbusters at 9.
- The Travel Channel has a new episode of Professional Poker Tour at 9.
- Also at 9: A&E has two new eps of Inked.
- At 10, Food Network has a new Good Eats.
- Spike has a new Blade at 10.
- Also at 10: Bravo has a new Project Runway.
ESPN to show WSOP almost ASAP
For the first time ever, ESPN is going to show The World Series of Poker while the event is still going on. It won't be live or even same day, but it's a big change from previous years, when they would show the event a few months after it was over. Coverage starts Tuesday night at 8.I'm a big poker fan. Not playing it (I'd love to but don't have any friends who are into it and I don't have the balls to enter a tournament), but watching it on television. I would have thought the poker craze would have died out by now, but if anything, the TV coverage is increasing. FOX Sports even has a new show coming up where the players will be housed in some dome, with special cameras set up around the table and heart monitors hooked up to the players.
Top Sites and Annoying Catchphrases: Entertainment Weekly in 60 seconds
EW picks the 100 Top Entertainment Sites. TV Squad isn't listed, but I'm sure that's just because they lost some of the info in a computer glitch, or maybe one writer thought another was already covering it. Right? Yeah, that's the reason.- James Woods, starring in a new CBS show this fall, is also a very serious poker player.
- Who is the best actor when it comes to guest star roles on TV? Ken Tucker picks Charles Durning. Who would you pick?
- This sounds like a topic for The Five: The Most Annoying TV Catchphrases of All-Time!
- EW readers would love to see Homefront on DVD.
Celebrity Poker Showdown hits the road
For its next season, Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown gets a new co-host and a new location. In support of
the people affected by Hurricane Katrina, the poker contest will film at Harrah's Casino in New Orleans. The building
was damaged in the hurricane and just reopened in February. All the celebrities involved with be playing for Hurricane
Katrina-related charities. Also, Phil Gordon is out. His
replacement is poker champ Phil Hellmuth. Don't worry, Dave Foley is still the other co-host. No word yet on which
celebs will participate, but I'd love it if they invite Bonnie Hunt back. She was hilarious. The World Poker Tour is back with new episodes
Not sure how I could forget to put this in
tonight's "What's on Tonight" post, since I've been addicted to it since it premiered, but the World Poker Tour returned with new episodes
on the Travel Channel tonight at 9. Yeah, I know, it's 10:44 as I'm typing this, so it's just about over, but they
repeat the show at midnight if you miss it. Tonight's show was the Bicycle Casino Legends of Poker, and featured writer/director Todd Phillips at the final table.
The Five: Things to watch instead of the Super Bowl
If you're not watching the Super Bowl
today, you don't have to go out and, like, do something outdoors. You can still veg out in front of the television with
a beer and some chips. Here are the five stand-out options for your television viewing pleasure:5. TBS: Yes, Dear marathon. It seems like an odd choice of show to be watching all day long, but TBS thinks somebody will be interested. Sixteen episodes of Yes, Dear begin at 7 pm ET.
Numb3rs: Double Down
As was mentioned a few weeks ago, professional poker player Annie Duke had signed on to guest star in this episode, which I'm sure you've
gathered revolves around playing poker. Too bad she was only in it for about two minutes as a blackjack dealer. And
unless you were looking for her, you probably wouldn't have noticed since we saw her hands more than her face. What a
letdown. Fortunately, this episode was really good and it had a twist that I actually fell for. What's on tonight: Dancing results, plus new Stargate, Battlestar

Counting cards on Numb3rs
Pro poker player Annie Duke is taking a gamble on primetime television. Or, she'll be trying her hand at acting.
Yeah, you get the idea: the sassy princess of poker gets a cameo on Numb3rs next month. She and Ben Mezrich,
poker expert and author of Bringing Down the House, will be part of an episode on Friday, January 13. The
episode starts with a murder at an LA card club where a card counting scheme is unveiled and several college students'
lives are in danger. Duke plays a card dealer and Mezrich plays a player. The episode is based, loosely, on Mezrich's
book, which is about a bunch of MIT students who figured out how to win millions of dollars at card games in Las Vegas
casinos in the 1990s. In fact, two of the scheming true-life MIT students, Jeff Ma and Matt Lau, even have small roles
in the episode as blackjack players. And, no. Nobody "drowns in the river".
