Which 'America's Got Talent' Acts Will Make It to the Next Round?

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 22nd 2010 2:50AM
Which 'America's Got Talent' Acts Will Make It to the Next Round? It's time to pick some more semi-finalists on 'America's Got Talent' (Wed., 9PM ET on NBC). Who will win? Who will lose? Let's find out! And your next batch of semi-finalists are ...

[Spoiler alert.]

... Pretty much the people that you would have expected. Crowd favorites AscenDance made it through, as did blues singer Michael Grimm. Also making the cut was Alice Tan Ridley, mother of 'Precious' star Gabby Sidibe. Alice has a moving back-story, a celebrity daughter, and has been singing for tips on subway trains for the past twenty years -- all of which is pretty heartwarming, and which basically guaranteed her a spot in the next round.

Antonio Restivo was the last pick for this batch of semi-finalists. Why did Antonio win? Because fire and magic are really really cool, that's why. After his selection, Antonio gave a moving shout-out to his father, who watched his earliest performances, but who passed on before he could see his son make it this far.

All in all, it was a fairly unsurprising night of choices on 'America's Got Talent.' But we're glad to see a bunch of obviously skilled performers continue on the road to the finals

'Saturday Night Live' - 'Gabourey Sidibe/MGMT' Recap

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 25th 2010 3:00PM
(S35E20) Like most of the public, I only knew Gabourey Sidibe from 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' (Okay, seriously, if we're gonna do that, can we put it on the end of every movie adaptation of a novel? 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, based on the novel 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' by JK Rowling). It was one of those movies that I wasn't sure if I wanted to even watch because just looking at Sidibe in the trailers made me uncomfortable.

Robin Quivers Defends Gabourey Sidibe Comments Made on 'Howard Stern' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 23rd 2010 3:30PM
Howard Stern's sidekick Robin Quivers appeared on 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated) and defended comments she and Stern made that 'Precious' actress Gabourey Sidibe would have a difficult time succeeding in Hollywood due to her weight.

"The young lady has a major problem with weight. An actor's body is a part of their instrument. You have to be able to fit yourself into a role. She happened to be perfect for 'Precious,' but how many roles are there like that in Hollywood? That's the first thing. The second thing is everybody can see she has a major problem, and nobody wants to address it," Quivers said.

'Saturday Night Live' Doesn't Think Gabourey Sidibe Is Too Fat

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 1st 2010 8:02PM
Gabourey SidibeIt's interesting that in E! Online's announcement about 'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe being asked to host an upcoming episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' their writer referenced a couple of disrespectful quotes Howard Stern had made about Sidibe in early March. Stern makes a living by saying things that push the envelope of good taste, but these words seem to have resonated a bit more than usual.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen," he said. "She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie." He even took on Oprah Winfrey, who's certainly no stranger to weight struggles or lasting success. "Oprah's another liar, a filthy liar. She's telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she's going to have a career."

Lee Daniels Talks About Using Mariah Carey for MoneyThe movie 'Precious' was a surprise hit this past year, being nominated for and winning a host of year-end awards, as well as earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for star Mo'Nique.

On 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated), Lee Daniels -- the director of 'Precious' -- revealed his secret for raising money to make the film. Mo'Nique Dishes on Open Marriage to Actor Sidney Hicks (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 5th 2010 2:00PM
During a sneak peek of Barbara Walters' Oscar special on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM ET on ABC), Academy Award nominee Mo'Nique revealed that she has an open marriage with husband Sidney Hicks. Mo'Nique went on to explain that sex outside of her marriage is fine and doesn't pose a threat to her relationship with her husband.

"That's not a deal breaker ... That's not something that would make us say, 'Pack your things and let's end the marriage,'" said Mo'Nique. The star of 'Precious' did point out, however, that she hasn't yet had an extramarital affair.

'Precious' Wins Big at 'NAACP Image Awards' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 1st 2010 3:08AM
NAACP Image Awards, Precious, Gabourey SidibeIt's wonderful to see an important film like 'Precious' get the accolades it deserves. The film swept the 'NAACP Image Awards' (Fri., 8PM ET on Fox), taking home trophies for outstanding motion picture, independent motion picture, actress, and supporting actress.

We loved Gabourey Sidibe's tearful acceptance speech. "I didn't really expect this," she said. "I just want to thank my God for ordering my steps, for everything that my life was, and everything that it is now."

It was also funnily poignant when director Lee Daniels proclaimed, "God is good," and the audience shot back, "All the time!"

Is 'Precious' a Dark Film? Director Lee Daniels Explains (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 12th 2010 4:22AM
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Lee DanielsIs 'Precious' a dark film? Or is it a truthful film? It all depends on your perspective.

When Jon Stewart of 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central) asked director Lee Daniels if he was attracted to dark stories, he had this to say: "I'm not attracted to dark stories. I'm just attracted to the truth."

Ok, but let's be honest. A film about a teenager who's been raped twice and has HIV is not exactly a light-hearted farce. We're guessing that Daniels gets that question a lot, and knows that many people won't see the movie because it's too "dark."

Gabourey Sidibe is Terrified of Mike Tyson (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Feb 3rd 2010 3:28PM
For Gabourey Sidibe, it doesn't seem the idea of losing the Academy Award for Best Actress in 'Precious' scares her nearly as much as Mike Tyson does. Sidibe appeared on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated) and told a story of a red carpet encounter with the retired pro fighter that left her terrified.

"This one time, I was ... at the Golden Globes. Mike Tyson was there ... and I didn't realize, but I'm terrified of Mike Tyson," Sidibe said. "I'm sure he's a very nice man, but there's something about a face tattoo. Face tattoos say, 'I've gone as far as I want to go in society. And, in fact, I think I want to take a few steps back.'"

Most Awkward Award Show Moments (VIDEO)

by Mike Scalise, posted Jan 8th 2010 4:00PM
First she did a twirly hug, then made an odd, slurry joke about a kitten, spoke at a rate of about one word per minute and seemed to have her own personal hype man ('Precious' director Lee Daniels). And what did we do while we watched Mariah Carey's acceptance speech for Breakthrough Actress at last weekend's Palm Springs Film Festival?

We winced. We cringed. Then we watched it again.

Carey's, uh, loosened speech was the first genuinely awkward moment this award show season, but there were many actors, filmmakers, and musicians before her who've heard their name called, stepped to the podium, and made things a little weird for everyone.

No doubt aware of industry buzz that Mo'Nique is sure to score an Oscar nomination for her role in 'Precious' as the title character's abusive mother, Terrence Howard offers a bit of helpful advice to the actress and talk show host during an interview on 'The Mo'Nique Show.'

Howard, who was nominated for his role in 'Hustle and Flow,' had this to say on receiving the nomination itself: "You'll be sitting there in front of that television pretending to sleep, and at 5:15 when they mention your name, tears will roll out of your eyes ... and you'll sit there and you'll pray that you are not dreaming."

'Precious' Star Gabourey Sidibe Joining 'C Word'

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 28th 2009 1:30PM
Gabourey SidibeNot many actors or actresses get Oscar buzz surrounding their debut performance, but Gabourey Sidibe is such a revelation as the lead in 'Precious' that Hollywood had no choice but to take notice. Now, Sidibe is looking to take that positive energy with her to Showtime's forthcoming pilot for 'The C Word.'

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sidibe is negotiating to appear in the pilot as a summer school student in the classroom of Cathy (three-time Academy Award nominee Laura Linney), a a suburban family woman and teacher who becomes diagnosed with cancer. It's pretty heavy subject matter, but the series is being billed as a dark comedy. Cathy chooses, rather than succumbing to her diagnosis, to find the lighter side of her situation.
