What to Watch Weekend, Nov. 1-2

by Kim Potts, posted Nov 1st 2008 5:00AM
'Army Wives'
(Sun., 10PM, Lifetime) 2nd season finale
Thankfully, no one's getting blown up in this season ender, but there are major changes ahead for the residents of Fort Marshall.

First up, Betty's nephew (guest star Ivan Sergei) visits and has news for Roxy that's going to add stress to what's already been a trying season for Roxy and Trevor.

Meanwhile, Pamela begins to question her life choices -- namely marrying into the military; Roland has to help out with a former patient; and Claudia Joy and Michael also have to get used to a few adjustments at Casa Holden, but that doesn't mean they're going to be happy about all of them.

What to Watch Weekend, Sept. 20-21

by Kim Potts, posted Sep 20th 2008 5:00AM
'The 60th Primetime Emmys'
(Sun., 8PM, ABC)
Five hosts? Sure, but tonight's Emmy celebration leaders -- Ryan Seacrest, Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Tom Bergeron -- also happen to be the nominees for a new Emmy category, Outstanding Reality/Competition Host, meaning viewers can decide at the end of the evening if Emmy voters have made the right call on the winner.

'30 Rock' and 'Mad Men' lead the comedy and drama series nominees, with 17 and 16 each, respectively, and crooner Josh Groban performs an ode to theme songs that will include more than two dozen TV theme classics.

A who's who of TV land -- including Christina Applegate, Kiefer Sutherland, Tina Fey, Eva Longoria, Hugh Laurie and new 'CSI' star Laurence Fishburne -- dole out the statues. Check out our special package for complete coverage of the 2008 Emmy Awards.

Primeval: Series 1 Episode 6 (season finale ... sort of)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 13th 2008 11:44PM
Primeval - Series One(S01E06) Over in the UK, the length of a show's season is dictated by story instead of tradition. So while we have 22 episode seasons on network television and somewhere around 12 or 13 on cable, they can have a show run only six or seven episodes and it's seen as perfectly normal. Thus, when BBC America imported Primeval over here to the US, they've combined the first two seasons into one thirteen episode run. Welcome to the first season finale of Primeval. And I'll see you here next Saturday for the second season premiere.

After several weeks of battling the prehistoric threat of the week, the team tackled a whole new kind of foe in this important chapter. Helen Cutter was back, confronting Claudia about the burgeoning feelings between her and Nick. And also apparently being unintentionally responsible for the latest threat to humanity. Consider anything past the jump a spoiler (if you've not seen it why are you reading a review anyway?).

'Saturday Night Live'
(Sat., 11:30PM, NBC) 34th season premiere
He nabbed the gold, but can he bring the funny? Olympian Michael Phelps becomes the latest athlete to host 'SNL,' as the show kicks off a fall that should be especially rife with election season material.

For tonight, the focus will be on the swimming god, which likely means gags about his long limbs, gold medal prowess and sudden media ubiquitousness.

A bonus (besides that $1 million he received from Speedo, we mean) for Phelps: One of his favorite rappers, 'Lil Wayne (he of 'Lollipop' fame), is the musical guest.

Primeval: Episode 1 (series premiere)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 10th 2008 3:09PM
Primeval(S01E01)Primeval already has a pretty rabid following across the pond where two series, or seasons as they say in the States, have already been completed. It looks like BBC America will be combining these two seasons into one thirteen episode long run. A third season has been greenlit and is set to premiere in January 2009 in the UK. Presumably, should this do well here, BBCA will pick it up shortly thereafter, to avoid an extensive gap.

I'd heard about this show, time travel and prehistoric creatures running rampant in and around London. It's one of those shows that developed such a buzz across the pond, that we heard about it stateside even before it got here. I think the only other show I can think of that did that was Billie Piper's The Secret Diary of a Call Girl. That's, of course, not counting Doctor Who and its derivatives as we've been aware of that property for years. Things start off at a gallop, literally, and keep moving pretty much for the full hour.

TV Squad: The Week Ahead

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 4th 2008 7:33AM
Olympic ringsOur Monday morning roundup of a half dozen things TV Squad readers - and TV fans in general - will be talking about this week.

1. The Olympics. NBC, along with CNBC and MSNBC and USA and the web, will have approximately 477,312 hours of coverage. (Starts Friday.)

2. Primeval. New show about a rip in time that lets dinosaurs come through to modern England. Is this one of them? (Premieres Saturday at 9 on BBC America.)

3. The season finales of American Gladiator and Nashville Star. People do still care about these shows, right? (Tonight on NBC.)

4. So You Think You Can Dance. The season finale. We know what happens to Idol winners, but what happens to the winners of this show? (Wednesday at 8 on FOX.)

5. I Want To Work For Diddy. I'm not saying that. It's the name of a new reality show. (Premieres tonight at 9 on VH-1.)

6. Million Dollar Listing. One of the stars was arrested last week, just before the second season premiere. There's no such thing as bad publicity, as the saying goes. (Tuesday at 11 on Bravo.)
