Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show' Promo Gets a Music Makeover

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 24th 2010 9:00AM
NBC has been recycling their 'Jay Leno Show' promos to prep for Leno's return to 'The Tonight Show' slot. Could there be a clearer metaphor?

Anyway, the new promos have been using a cover version of the Beatles' "Get Back" to not-so-subtly greet the host back from prime time hell. But one very clever YouTube user found a much more appropriate song to accompany Jay on his return back to 11:30 p.m.

Dear CBS: Please Stop Giving Away 'Young and the Restless' Plot Twists in the Promos!

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 1st 2010 5:05PM
Eric BraedenI pride myself in being able to see TV show plot twists coming a mile away. Maybe it's from watching TV for so long or maybe it's from watching so much TV and writing about it all day long, but I can usually figure out something that's going on. There will be a hint, a piece of writing, some foreshadowing, or something else that gives a clue to a plot twist that I can figure out.

That's not to say I figured out that the season finale of 'Lost' a couple of seasons ago was a flash forward and not a flashback, but most times I can sense something.

But there have been two major (and I mean MAJOR) plot twists on 'The Young and the Restless' the past few weeks that I didn't see coming at all. Too bad CBS spoiled them for me (and other fans) with their promos.

Was Fox rooting for the Yankees to win the World Series?

Considering the incredible overnight ratings that Fox got for Game Six of the World Series, you might think I'm crazy to suggest that the network would be rooting for the New York Yankees last night to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, but I have evidence. All through the game, Fox was promoting Fringe and Bones, urging viewers to tune in tomorrow night -- tonight -- for new episodes. Why would the network be sending that message when there was a possibility of a Game Seven?

USA scores with Monk tribute promo

by Allison Waldman, posted Jul 29th 2009 9:00PM
adrian_monk_tony_shalhoubSometimes when I'm watching USA Network, I'm as tickled with the promotions for the shows as I am the shows themselves. That's saying a lot, because as a rule, networks are not very clever about commercials hawking their shows. However, USA is the exception to the rule. Just yesterday, Kona wrote about the Psych promo that took a shot at The Mentalist -- completely justified, too -- and here's another that caught my eye. It's a tribute to Monk.

This is the last season for Monk, so USA gathered some of the stars -- in character -- from its other programs to give a little tribute to Adrian Monk. What a stroke of genius!

SyFy wants you to forget Sci-Fi and just Imagine Greater

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 6th 2009 7:30PM
SyFyJoel told you a while back about the Sci-Fi Channel changing its name to SyFy for some reason. Now they've unleashed a series of promos and commercials to get you used to the name change, which happens tomorrow.

One of the longer promos features several cast members of SyFy shows getting together for a big party in a big house (must be a running theme this season). I think it's less sci-fi and more Willy Wonka/Beatles acid trip.

(UPDATE 7/7: If you tune over to SyFy now, you'll see that the changeover took effect. So long, Sci Fi...)

The Simpsons Movie on DVD December 18

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 31st 2007 10:02AM

SimpsonsThe always-informative Simpsons Channel has news from the always-informative TVShowsOnDVD.com about the upcoming DVD release of the Simpsons Movie. The information was relayed to TVShowsOnDVD through some folks in the industry, so everything I mention here is subject to change. Still, I couldn't resist this opportunity to whet fans' appetites.

The DVD will be out on December 18, and it will be circular. Also, the film will be available in both full screen and widescreen formats. I don't know why you'd want to buy full screen, unless you want to sit and pretend you're watching an extra-long episode of the TV series.

What do you think of Oprah's secret?

by Julia Ward, posted Feb 18th 2007 8:10PM
Oprah and Rhonda ByrneYeah, sure, I was snookered. Oprah dipped into the Viral Marketing 101 handbook when she ran promos asking, "What is the secret?" It wasn't enough to get me to watch Oprah, but I did investigate online to find out what "secret" was being kept from me by the good people at Harpo Productions.

What "secret" could Oprah possibly have left to share? Over the years, she's told me to embrace my spirit, cut out the "white" stuff, wear cotton underwear and drive a Pontiac. Apparently, Oprah's "secret" is The Secret by Rhonda Byrne - another in a long line of vaguely spiritual Four Agreements/Celestine Prophecy/Miracle Matrix self-help tomes.

NBC to play nice with YouTube

by Keith McDuffee, posted Jun 28th 2006 8:10AM
youtube logoNBC has been fighting with YouTube ever since fans of Saturday Night Live started publishing clips from the show, starting with the well-known 'Lazy Sunday' digital short a while back. It seems NBC may have finally realized what a hit YouTube made of the digital shorts from SNL and will start placing promos for upcoming shows on the site, including some Tonight Show clips.

What I wonder now is, will NBC still cry foul when SNL digital shorts appear on the site, or will they simply start showing them themselves?
