Things I Hate About TV: Pop-up ads
When Lewis Black went off at the Emmys a couple of years ago about TV becoming obnoxious with the amount of information splayed on the screen, he hit the nail right on the head. Sad to say, things have not gotten better since that rant. In fact, they're worse. I don't know what's worse, the annoying pop-up ads on the television screen or the annoying pop-up ads on the computer screen. At least in the case of the latter, it's the equivalent of a commercial and -- somewhat -- understandable. But when you're watching a television show and have to ignore the bug in the corner, then be subjected to a variety of pop-up promotions and reminders for shows you may or may not be interested in watching it's enough to make you turn off the set. I'd say it's enough to make you switch channels, but where can you go to avoid the intrusion? PBS?
Seven retro network promos to leave you confused, delighted - VIDEOS
While ABC, NBC, and CBS have historically remained in a cutthroat battle for viewers, each network has shared one common trait: come the season of network promotional campaigns, all actors must be prepared to look absolutely ridiculous. After the jump ... Remember this pop cultural gem (video below) that gained traction on the Net not too long ago? The sheer oddity of the clip alone forces us to ask ourselves several questions: do these people all live together? Why is Marla Gibbs dressed like an astronaut? Does Bea Arthur do everybody's shoppingl? CAN'T NELL CARTER JUST SIT DOWN AND REST HER FEET FOR A SECOND? (Seriously, give her a break!)
Aqua Teen lights on eBay
You know that crazy Aqua Teen Hunger Force promotion that caused a kerfuffle in Boston recently? Well, if you've got a fat wad of cash I suggest you get yourself over to eBay where some of those neon Mooninites are currently up for auction. This is your chance to own a piece of advertising history. A promotion hasn't caused a scare like this since that time Poppin Fresh got high on wheat germ and held a press conference demanding the immediate execution of Mrs. Butterworth.
Our readers have had a lot of opinions about who exactly is to blame for the misunderstanding, and whether or not local authorities and media overreacted to the incident. I don't have an opinion about it one way or the other, but one thing is certain: a lot more people now know about Aqua Teen Hunger Force who probably had no idea what the heck it was before all of this craziness went down.
