Soleil Moon Frye Gives Women Inspiration with New Book, Blog on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 23rd 2011 3:20PM
Ann Curry and Soleil Moon Frye on 'Today'Soleil Moon Frye was famous at age seven for playing the proverbial precocious kid on 'Punky Brewster.' Now 35, she's married with kids of her own, has her own clothing line at Target, and is also a parenting and social media guru. Her memoir, 'Happy Chaos,' covers her life from child star to mom. Frye spoke with Ann Curry Tuesday on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) and tried to give people, especially mothers, a bit of inspiration.

The name of the book comes from Frye's attitude toward her household. "I don't know about you and your house, but it's insanity, you know what I mean?" she said. "Like, it's crazy at all hours, and I think we need to give ourselves a little freedom and cut ourselves a little slack and just do the best we can do."

Punky Brewster where are they nowIt ran for just four seasons (1984-88), but "Punky power" had a lasting impact on pop culture, as 'Punky Brewster' remains a beloved, family-friendly series, with star Soleil Moon Frye named as one of the '100 Greatest Kid Stars' in a VH1 special.

NBC stars sing about family - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted May 19th 2008 2:02PM

NBC logoOh, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

After the jump is a video from the NBC 60th Anniversary show in 1986 (very interesting). It's rather surreal. We get to see Bea Arthur, Nell Carter, Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett from Facts of Life), Marla Gibbs, and Alfonso Ribiero sing a song about "family." That's the NBC family, that is, as all of them were starring on shows at the time (Facts of Life, Golden Girls, Gimme A Break, 227, and Silver Spoons). Punky Brewster herself makes an appearance too, but only to say three words and gives a thumbs up. Barbara Eden introduces the song. The most cringe-worthy moment isn't any of the singing, it's when Gibbs and Carter pass each other on the stairs and casually say that they love each other's shows.

Can you imagine a network doing this now? I want to see Hugh Laurie, Stewie, the guys from Prison Break, Marge Simpson, and Gordon Ramsay get on stage at the next Emmy Awards and sing about the FOX family.

True Hollywood Story: Punky Brewster airs this Sunday

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 18th 2006 12:01PM

punky brewsterThis Sunday a new E! True Hollywood Story covers Punky Brewster and its star Soleil Moon Frye. Punky Brewster, when it aired in the 1980s, was the most popular sitcom for ages 4 to 4 and a half, or so the ratings grid that only exists in my head claims. Really, though, the show wasn't very good. Though I suppose my eight year old self would argue differently. I suppose for a light comedy about child abandonment it was pretty okay. The special, I assume, will cover all the seedy goings on that happened behind the scenes, such as cocaine and heroin use, cockfighting, and chickens doing blow and getting in knife fights backstage. I'm not sure if any of that is actually true, since I just made it up, but we can all watch it Sunday evening and find out for ourselves, then we'll come back here and compare notes.
