Eddie Murphy Talks Stand-up, James Brown, Redd Foxx on 'Tonight Show' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted May 20th 2010 5:41AM
Eddie Murphy Talks Stand-up, James BrownEarly in their stand-up careers, Eddie Murphy and Jay Leno didn't make much, and had to be careful with their money. On 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC), the two reminisced about not getting paid, James Brown's questionable financial advice and comedian Redd Foxx's tax-dodging methods.

"I remember I did a gig in a little place," said Murphy. "And afterwards -- I did such a bad show -- I went up to the guy ... and said, 'Hey, I was supposed to get 50 dollars for the show.' And he looked at me and said, 'You better get the **** outta my face.'"

James Brown later advised Murphy to "bury [his] money in the woods." Just how is that helpful? Watch and learn.

Donny and Marie do Star Wars - VIDEOS

by Bob Sassone, posted May 22nd 2008 3:03PM

Donny and MarieWhen I first came across this video on my web travels, I thought it was part of that infamous Star Wars Holiday Special that aired in the 70s and hasn't been seen on television since (I think George Lucas is trying to forget it even exists). However, this is actually from Donny & Marie, and it's just as surreal, if not more. Long before she was dancing with other stars, Marie played Princess Leia to Donny's Luke Skywalker. Kris Kristofferson plays Han Solo (and looks like he'd rather be someplace else), the voice of Darth Vader is Thurl Ravenscroft (Tony the Tiger!), and General Harkin is played by...Paul Lynde!

The most incredible part though is Redd Foxx, who hovers above and gives little bits of wisdom. The 70s were a very screwed up time. I also don't think that Donny & Marie would get very far if they tried out for American Idol. I used to watch this show though.

(Note, the first video after the jump is completely out of ;sync. Believe me, it wouldn't be any better if the sound and video were together.)

Five deaths that rocked television, or at least their shows

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 26th 2007 2:01PM

John RitterI'm feeling a little melancholy today. This past Friday, a friend of mine lost two daughters in a senseless automobile accident. They were thirteen and eighteen; one having just started college and the other just entering the magical teen years. It was so sudden and insane that I can't really wrap my brain around it. As a parent, I can only begin to understand what he and the girls' mother are going through, but even then I'm sure it pales in comparison to the reality.

As I thought about this blog and things to post on television, I was struck by how death can have a dramatic and instant impact on a fictional show as well. Sometimes when an actor dies, the show is able to move on with relative smoothness, but other times there is an irreplaceable hole that just never seems to be filled.

Everybody Hates Chris: Everybody Hates Dirty Jokes

by Adam Finley, posted May 1st 2007 10:21AM

everybody hates chris(S02E20) Up to this point, we've seen how his upbringing, home life, and troubles at school helped to shape Chris' worldview, but this is the first episode where we caught a glimpse of what made Chris want to be a comedian.

Since this series is a somewhat fictional take on Chris' life as a kid, we don't know if the real Chris Rock sneaked downstairs to eavesdrop on his parents listening to Redd Foxx albums, but one assumes young Chris was probably exposed to the legendary comedian at some point, not to mention the likes of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and George Carlin.

Sanford and Son could be heading to the big screen

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 2nd 2007 3:01PM

sanford and sonDoes this really surprise anyone? Sanford and Son, Redd Foxx's sitcom from the 1970s, might be made into a feature film with Bernie Mac taking on the role of Fred Sanford popularized by the late Foxx. The film has been kicking around the studios for a few years now, and is currently at Sony. Nick Cannon is also slated to play Lamont Sanford, Fred's son.

I'm not a big fan of TV to movie adaptations, but I do recognize that sometimes they can work. The movie Charlie's Angels, which I found rather insipid, was at least based on three crime-fighting chicks, a concept that lends itself to a full-length movie. I'm just not sure how Sanford and Son could be stretched beyond half an hour, taking into consideration the show was essentially built around Foxx and his comedy. The show could have taken place in a bicycle repair shop and I don't think it would have made much difference. Unless some filmmaker out there has something truly amazing in mind for this flick, it seems better to just let it go.

Sanford and Son marathon in March

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 20th 2006 11:13AM
sanford and sonIs there a catchier tune than the theme to Sanford and Son? Yeah, probably, but it was a rhetorical question anyway, so let's forget about it and move on. Now where was I? Oh yeah, TV Land will be airing a 48-hour Sanford and Son marathon beginning Saturday, March 4 at 6 a.m. (EST) and running throughout the weekend. If you're a fan of the show where Redd Foxx basically played himself for six seasons, mosey on over to TV Land's page for the show and vote for your favorite episode. They'll be tallying up the results and the winner will be revealed at the end of the marathon Sunday evening.
