Letterman Compares Regis to Johnny Carson, Kisses Him Goodbye (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 16th 2011 3:15PM
David Letterman and Regis Philbin have been friends for years, so Letterman stopped by 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to bid his dear buddy farewell, and to tease him about his Newsweek cover-shoot with Jerry Seinfeld.

Holding up the cover, Letterman joked, "You've been on my show, what, about a million times? How many times has Jerry put you on his show? Oh I forgot, Jerry doesn't have a show."

Letterman then payed Regis a high compliment, putting his legacy in the same sentence with TV legend Johnny Carson, who was known as the King of Late Night. "When Johnny stepped down ... it was, who's gonna be the guy? Well lord knows it wasn't me ... and it's certainly not Leno ... so Regis, we realized, sitting right under our nose, here's the guy," Letterman said.

Jimmy Fallon Serenades Regis (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 14th 2011 1:45PM
It's Regis Philbin's last week on 'Live,' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) and the show is pulling out all the stops to send him off as a hero of daytime TV. On Monday's show, Jimmy Fallon stopped by and serenaded Regis to the tune of 'It's Only Just Begun.'

Fallon sang, "Why do you have to leave? He's only sixty-three ... What's that, he's 80? Good lord." He then gave a musical run-through of Regis' TV career. "He started out at as a page on NBC .. from Joey Bishop into Kathie Lee, I'll miss all those things you said," before breaking into an impression of Regis excitedly yelling at Gellman about Jerry Seinfeld being on the cover of Newsweek.

Regis Philbin May Have Been America's Goofiest TV Chef (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 11th 2011 2:00PM
Was Regis Philbin America's first TV chef? No, but he was perhaps the goofiest man to ever attempt to cook something in a TV kitchen. 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) continued the Philbin Farewell Tour on Friday with a look back at Regis' most memorable culinary moments, which included him rescuing a Playboy bunny and smooching Gwyneth Paltrow.

The highlight of the montage came during a cooking segment with a Playboy bunny. When a small grease-fire broke out, sending smoking billowing from the stove, Regis sprang into action, picking up the model and yelling, "Save the bunny, save the bunny!" This is the moment Regis proved himself to be an American hero.

The segment concluded with a surprise-guest appearance from a long-time college football coach ... no, not Joe Paterno. It was Lou Holtz, who coached for years at Regis' alma matter Notre Dame. "When the bank asks me to list my assets, I start with my friendship with Regis Philbin," Holtz said.

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 9th 2011 2:00PM
Regis Philbin's final 'Live' show is slightly over a week away, and his farewell tour has been an epic run of montages, surprise guest appearances, and stripping for Snooki. But the celebration of all things Regis wouldn't have been complete without an awkward, cringe-worthy interview ... and Wednesday's sit-down with 'Twilight' star Taylor Lautner provided just that.

Regis couldn't hide his obsession with Lautner's abs from the get-go, and didn't relent as the interview proceeded. "Would it be too much for me, an older person, to ask you, a virile .... if you would just show me your abs," Regis said. "Oh my god ... what?" Kelly Ripa asked, squirming in her chair.

Regis Farewell Countdown Continues With Look Back at His Hilarious Injury History (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 2nd 2011 2:00PM
The Regis Philbin Farewell Tour unofficially kicked off last week when Regis stripped for Snooki. After two days in a row of awesome 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) montages, it's officially in full effect. Yesterday's Regis compilation chronicled his decades-long struggle with technology, and today we were treated to a look back at Reeg's extensive and hilarious injury history.

Philbin, 80, may well be a medical marvel studied by scientists for generations to come. The montage showed him dealing with a swollen shin after fouling a baseball off his leg, showing off a pelvic X-ray, demonstrating how he uses nitroglycerin tablets for stress relief, and triumphantly throwing away a walker. It's a testament to the man's longevity that after all these maladies he's still going strong.

Nick Lachey & Kelly Ripa flash mob for HalloweenRegis and Kelly always do it up big for Halloween. This year, 'Live!' is kicking off their annual Halloween Headliner's Ball spectacular (airs Mon., Oct. 31) with a flash mob production number, and we've got the exclusive first look right here.

Featuring Kelly Ripa (in some fabulously bright purple lycra pants) and guest co-host Nick Lachey (not sure we'll say the same about his fluorescent shutter shades), the choreographed dance to LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' has more than 100 flash mobbers dancing, all for a confused crowd of onlookers in New York's Lincoln Center.

Back in the studio, 'Project Runway' host Heidi Klum, '90210' star AnnaLynne McCord and 23 other celebrity guests will be on hand for the show as Kelly and Nick re-live this year's biggest headlines and most outrageous shows through costume -- almost 40 different looks in total throughout the show -- from 'Toddlers & Tiaras' to Charlie Sheen and everything in between.

And, of course, the audience members will be dressed up for the costume contest as well -- one lucky person will win the grand prize of $10,000 to shop at HomeGoods.

Regis Strips for Snooki (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 27th 2011 12:00PM
Usually, Snooki is the one taking her clothes off in front of the TV cameras, but on 'Live With Regis and Kelly,' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) it was Regis' turn. Snooki was on to promote her new book 'Confessions of a Guidette' and hand out some guid-tastic party favors, which included a zebra-striped tie for Reeg.

Things got real Jersey after that. "Guidos usually don't wear ties, so you should like, take off your shirt, and then it'd be cool," Snooki said. As Regis eagerly obliged, standing up to take off his jacket, Snooki and Kelly Ripa couldn't believe what they were seeing. "You're getting naked?" Snooki asked.

"Let this happen," Kelly Ripa pleaded, as Regis unbuttoned his shirt and the crowd began to chant his name. "You think I'm afraid of you?" Regis asked Snooki, who seemed slightly shocked at the spectacle that was unfolding. Finally, after Kelly had egged him on by calling him a "juicehead gorilla," Regis took his shirt completely off, and put on the zebra tie.

Regis Philbin Hints Contract Talks Led to 'Live!' Departure, Insists He's Not Retiring

by Chris Harnick, posted Oct 21st 2011 3:35PM
Regis PhilbinRegis Philbin is not retiring, he's just moving on from 'Live! With Regis and Kelly.' The legendary talk show host called Detroit's Mojo in the Morning radio show to set those rumors straight.

"I'm not calling it quits, you understand," he said. "I'm moving on. I'm not retiring. I'm not quitting. I'm moving on."

Philbin is leaving his 'Live!' post after 28 years with the morning program on Fri., Nov. 18. However, he seems to be painting a picture that it wasn't exactly a mutual split. When asked if contract talks had a hand in his exit, Philbin didn't exactly deny the rumors.

"The contractual issue just never worked out," he said, "but I was going to leave before that anyway."

Kaley Cuoco Almost Wasn't on 'The Big Bang Theory' (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 4th 2011 7:30PM
'The Big Bang Theory' star Kaley Cuoco seemed pretty comfortable on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), possibly because she co-starred with Kelly Ripa on the sitcom '8 Simple Rules.' After a brief bit of reminiscing, Cuoco talked about the important role that family plays in her life, and revealed that she almost didn't get the part of Penny on 'Big Bang.'

Regis asked Cuoco about her family, and her dad, who she recently took as her date to the Emmys. As it turns out, he's never missed a taping of any of the three sitcoms she's been on. "It's just the cutest thing ever," she said. Her family lives close by, and while she used to go to her folks' place for family dinners, they're now coming to her "dream house" instead. "I order in ... I don't cook anything," she joked.
