'Live' Celebrates Regis' Finest Sporting Moments (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 10th 2011 1:35PM
Regis Philbin is a sportsman for the ages. Did you know he played on the tennis team when he was a student at Notre Dame? Neither did we. Thanks, Wikipedia!

Regs' 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) farewell tour continued on Thursday with a montage celebrating his athletic prowess, with a look back at him wrestling, boxing, playing pepper with Derek Jeter, snapping a football to Boomer Esiasan and a variety of other sports schenanigans.

The segment concluded with a surprise-guest appearance from a long-time college football coach ... no, not Joe Paterno. It was Lou Holtz, who coached for years at Regis' alma matter Notre Dame. "When the bank asks me to list my assets, I start with my friendship with Regis Philbin," Holtz said.

Regis Begs to See Taylor Lautner's Abs (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 9th 2011 2:00PM
Regis Philbin's final 'Live' show is slightly over a week away, and his farewell tour has been an epic run of montages, surprise guest appearances, and stripping for Snooki. But the celebration of all things Regis wouldn't have been complete without an awkward, cringe-worthy interview ... and Wednesday's sit-down with 'Twilight' star Taylor Lautner provided just that.

Regis couldn't hide his obsession with Lautner's abs from the get-go, and didn't relent as the interview proceeded. "Would it be too much for me, an older person, to ask you, a virile .... if you would just show me your abs," Regis said. "Oh my god ... what?" Kelly Ripa asked, squirming in her chair.

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 8th 2011 2:00PM
Regis Philbin's last few weeks on daytime TV have been filled with mash-up montages and surprise celebrity drop-ins. Monday, Robert De Niro made a surprise appearance on 'Live,' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) and on Tuesday Michael Douglas showed up to bid Regis farewell.

As Regis and Kelly were looking back on old footage of Regis and Douglas doing competing impressions of Kirk Douglas from the 1960 film 'Spartacus,' Michael walked out onto the stage, where he and Regis shook hands and hugged.

Regis Bromance Montage Ends With Surprise Appearance from Robert De Niro (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 7th 2011 3:15PM
Regis Philbin's farewell tour has celebrated the many half-weird, half-endearing aspects of his on-screen persona with a run of awesome montages. Monday's 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) installment payed tribute to Regis' various bromances in a mancrush-mashup that featured footage of Reeg gushing over Matt Damon, Kobe Bryant, David Letterman and more.

In a surprise twist at the end of the tribute, Robert De Niro appeared from backstage to present Regis with a dozen roses and wish him a fond farewell.

As they hugged it out, Regis told De Niro, "You don't mind all the other guys, do you? They're just passing friends, you're the man, you really are." Right back at you, Reeg.

Regis Philbin is moving on from 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) on November 18, and to celebrate his legacy, 'Live' is running montages of his trademark adorable old man moments. Today's installment focused on his affinity for botching celebrity's names.

Regis Farewell Countdown Continues With Look Back at His Hilarious Injury History (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 2nd 2011 2:00PM
The Regis Philbin Farewell Tour unofficially kicked off last week when Regis stripped for Snooki. After two days in a row of awesome 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) montages, it's officially in full effect. Yesterday's Regis compilation chronicled his decades-long struggle with technology, and today we were treated to a look back at Reeg's extensive and hilarious injury history.

Philbin, 80, may well be a medical marvel studied by scientists for generations to come. The montage showed him dealing with a swollen shin after fouling a baseball off his leg, showing off a pelvic X-ray, demonstrating how he uses nitroglycerin tablets for stress relief, and triumphantly throwing away a walker. It's a testament to the man's longevity that after all these maladies he's still going strong.

Regis Strips for Snooki (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 27th 2011 12:00PM
Usually, Snooki is the one taking her clothes off in front of the TV cameras, but on 'Live With Regis and Kelly,' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) it was Regis' turn. Snooki was on to promote her new book 'Confessions of a Guidette' and hand out some guid-tastic party favors, which included a zebra-striped tie for Reeg.

Things got real Jersey after that. "Guidos usually don't wear ties, so you should like, take off your shirt, and then it'd be cool," Snooki said. As Regis eagerly obliged, standing up to take off his jacket, Snooki and Kelly Ripa couldn't believe what they were seeing. "You're getting naked?" Snooki asked.

"Let this happen," Kelly Ripa pleaded, as Regis unbuttoned his shirt and the crowd began to chant his name. "You think I'm afraid of you?" Regis asked Snooki, who seemed slightly shocked at the spectacle that was unfolding. Finally, after Kelly had egged him on by calling him a "juicehead gorilla," Regis took his shirt completely off, and put on the zebra tie.

Kaley Cuoco Almost Wasn't on 'The Big Bang Theory' (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 4th 2011 7:30PM
'The Big Bang Theory' star Kaley Cuoco seemed pretty comfortable on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), possibly because she co-starred with Kelly Ripa on the sitcom '8 Simple Rules.' After a brief bit of reminiscing, Cuoco talked about the important role that family plays in her life, and revealed that she almost didn't get the part of Penny on 'Big Bang.'

Regis asked Cuoco about her family, and her dad, who she recently took as her date to the Emmys. As it turns out, he's never missed a taping of any of the three sitcoms she's been on. "It's just the cutest thing ever," she said. Her family lives close by, and while she used to go to her folks' place for family dinners, they're now coming to her "dream house" instead. "I order in ... I don't cook anything," she joked.

Cloris Leachman Really Wants to Know Regis Philbin's Future TV Plans (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Sep 26th 2011 6:30PM
Cloris Leachman and Regis Philbin shared a moment Monday on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), even if it was somewhat uncomfortable for everyone else. The 'Raising Hope' star turned the tables on her interviewer, asking Regis a series of questions about his future TV plans after he leaves 'Live' at the end of the year.

Turning her back to the audience, Leachman clasped Regis' hand and asked him, repeatedly, what he'd be doing in the next phase of his career. He tried to tell her that he doesn't know exactly, but hopes he'll be back on TV in some capacity (we've heard he's filming some kind of reality show). It soon became apparent that she wasn't going to let up. "Uh oh, it's one of those," he groaned.

The segment really began to feel like eavesdropping on a private conversation when Leachman moved in closer, and Regis, sounding a little sad, said "I don't know, honey. I really don't know." As Kelly Ripa took a rare moment of silence, a quick shot of the audience suggested that they didn't know how to react to this unusual moment of intimacy, either.

Regis Philbin to Get His Own Reality Show?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Sep 8th 2011 6:00AM
Regis PhilbinHas Kathie Lee Gifford got a working crystal ball? When Regis Philbin first announced his impending retirement, she said "He'll never retire ... I think his most enjoyable days are ahead of him."

Now it seems as though she was right. In an interview with 'USA Today' Philbin reveals that he's been mulling over the idea of taking on his own reality show after he steps down from 'Live!' in November.

"There are several things that interest me," he says. "You know these reality shows? I would love to do a real reality show where Regis goes out."

In fact, Philbin's already got the ball rolling on a potential new project -- "I did a little pilot for somebody last week in L.A." -- but says he'll wait to see the edited version before he says yes or no to continuing.

Regis Philbin Doesn't Like Geoff's Impression of Him on 'The Late Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 25th 2011 10:45AM
Geoff Peterson, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Geoff Peterson is getting more and more advanced the longer he's on 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS). Remember when he first appeared with his stiff movements, robotic voice and limited vocabulary. He had only a few rote phrases he could repeat.

Now, he's doing celebrity impressions, and a pretty spot-on one of Regis Philbin. Unfortunately, Philbin didn't care for it at all.

"I thought he was having like an epileptic fit over here," Philbin said of Geoff's stammering impression. "I don't talk like that at all!"

Billy Bush, Kit Hoover, and Kathie Lee Gifford talk about Regis Philbin on 'Access Hollywood Live'It's been well-publicized that Regis Philbin is leaving 'Live With Regis and Kelly' at some point this year. by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 27th 2011 12:45PM
Sofia Vergara of 'Modern Family' on 'Live With Regis and Kelly'Just as fans are eagerly awaiting details about season three of 'Modern Family,' so too is Sofia Vergara. Vergara, who plays Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, said Wednesday on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated) that she isn't sure what's in store next for season, but she does get a detail or two from writer/producer Steve Levitan from time to time, completely out of context.

Vergara said she gets no scripts in advance and doesn't know what will happen with Gloria. "I have no clue," she said. "The only thing is like a month ago I got a, like a text from Steve Levitan and he said, 'Do you know how to horseback ride?' So those are the kinds of hints that I get so I know something is going to come on that side of the story. But I never know."

Regis and Kelly's Special Cakes from the 'Cake Boss' Melt, Get Eaten Anyway (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 26th 2011 4:45PM
Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin show of their 'Cake Boss' cakes on 'Live With Regis and Kelly'Last week on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated), Regis Philbin tried his hand at baking a wedding cake with 'Cake Boss' Buddy Valastro. Valastro suggested they bury and say a prayer over Philbin's creation. This week, Philbin and Kelly Ripa showed off photos of custom cakes the Cake Boss made for their staff party, which ended up melted, but got eaten anyway.

The cakes were made to look like busts of Philbin and Ripa, but Ripa wasn't terribly impressed. "The Cake Boss made cakes of us," she said. "I look like you, and I thought your cake looked like Ronald Reagan." Since the party was outdoors, during a heat-wave, they had to put the cakes in the air-conditioned party-bus, but that couldn't save them.

Brian Williams Describes Flying in a Rickety Private Plane With Regis Philbin (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 26th 2011 10:00AM
Brian Williams, 'Late Show with David Letterman'When you think of a private aircraft that a celebrity might use, you're probably imagining a little slice of luxury in the sky. So was Brian Williams when he agreed to travel with Regis Philbin to an awards ceremony.

As he told David Letterman on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), the reality was quite a bit different.

"We get on and ... the pilots board first and then instruct you in how to close the ... You have to close yourself inside the thing," Williams said.

As a journalist, though, Williams appreciates the value of a picture and so we saw a darkened shot of him and Philbin. It looked like they were packed in the back of a shipping crate, with one small bulb illuminated above them.
