'Rescue Me' Series Finale Brings Laughs, Tears and Closure (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 8th 2011 1:46AM
After seven seasons, it was the end of the journey for Tommy Gavin on 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX).

It's hard to say if it's a great ending or a disappointing ending, but a lot of that depends on your expectations going in. I would say it is definitely a satisfactory ending and, more importantly, a consistent ending.

'Rescue Me' has always been about dark humor, guys being the idiots that guys can be, and moments of danger, violence and occasional poignancy. In that, this finale delivered by being absolutely consistent with what this show has always been about.

Did Denis Leary Say Too Much About the 'Rescue Me' Finale on 'Late Night'? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 7th 2011 7:16AM
Denis Leary, 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'Denis Leary was talking about the emotions behind the final day of shooting for 'Rescue Me' on 'Late Night' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC), when he may have inadvertently let loose with a hint about the series finale.

"The final scene that we shot, without giving anything away, is a funeral scene," he said. That this scene exists has been seen already in previews for the finale, airing Wednesday at 10PM ET on FX. It's the next line that may be telling. Leary concluded his thought, "I was off-camera that day."

Read into it what you will, but it could be a hint that Tommy Gavin may not survive the series. Or it could just be that he didn't go to this particular funeral for whatever reason, or that maybe they just scheduled shooting so that Leary wouldn't have to be in front of the camera on the last day of shooting.

From a Wedding to Trapped in a Blazing Inferno on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 1st 2011 3:45AM
'Rescue Me' - 'Vows'Holy cow, how the time flies. Did your realize next week is the final episode of 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX)? Kind of adds new weight to the declaration made in this episode that Colleen's wedding may be the last happy occasion the Gavins ever have together.

This penultimate episode was weighted toward Colleen's big day for the bulk of it, with the tail-end setting up a terrifying and dramatic cliffhanger that will feed whatever ending the writers and producers have come up with for Tommy and the crew of Ladder 62.

As 'Rescue Me' does very well, the wedding scene was the perfect blend of humor and drama, with Tommy opening it by horning his way into walking his daughter down the aisle, against the express wishes of everyone there. But when has Tommy not put his own wishes before anyone else?

Lou Sets Tommy Up for Forced Retirement on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 25th 2011 5:25AM
'Rescue Me' - 'Jeter'I should probably start now, because it's pretty unlikely that anyone will ever hear these cries, but 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX) really needs to be nominated for a few Emmy Awards. If you don't want to give it one for best series, because all your favorites are still available, then please for the writing, Denis Leary, Maura Tierney and John Scurti this season.

For Scurti, I nominate this episode as the one he should submit for Emmy consideration for Best Supporting Actor. What a subtle and beautiful performance he gives throughout, and it was quite a tumultuous episode for his character, Lou.

Tommy Has a Vision of 9/11, Struggles With Its Anniversary on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 18th 2011 7:18AM
'Rescue Me' - '344'Tommy Gavin's hallucinations have been a staple of 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX) since the very beginning. Now that he's doing a good job of staying sober, though, we haven't gotten them as often. He has been having what he calls "dry drunk" episodes, which allow for sober hallucinations.

Two of them plagued him in this week's installment. When he went down to Ground Zero for reasons as yet unknown, he had a vision of 9/11 and saw Jimmy carrying a woman up from the subway tunnels. It was a sobering reminder of that day that haunts him so deeply, and a sobering reminder of his sobriety.

Denis Leary Is Trying Really Hard Not to Spoil 'Rescue Me' and 'Amazing Spider-Man' (VIDEO)

Denis Leary talks 'Rescue Me' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man' on 'Access Hollywood Live'If this Denis Leary's interview on 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) is any indication, it's going to be pretty entertaining to watch him do press for the final season of 'Rescue Me,' and next year's 'The Amazing Spider-Man.' 'Rescue Me' ends with its series finale on September 6, but 'Spider-Man,' in which Leary plays Captain George Stacy, father of Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, doesn't come out until next summer. Leary tried so hard not to give away details about either project to Billy Bush that the interview turned into a miniature stand-up bit.

NYPD vs. NYFD Rivalry on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

'Rescue Me' S07/E05As the tenth anniversay of 9/11 draws near, emotions are running high on 'Rescue Me' (Weds., 10PM ET on FX).

Last night, things got ugly at a post-game drinking contest between New York City cops and firefighters.

It started off well enough, with the captain of the police team saying that tying the hockey game, "in honor all those on both sides who died on that fateful day ... seems like throwing an arm around all our firefighting brothers."

As the crowd in the bar started cheering, the long-simmering tension over the number of firefighters killed on 9/11 versus the number of police officers killed, finally reached boiling point and a bar fight erupted. New York's Finest trading blows with New York's Bravest.

Tommy Loses His Temper During a 9/11 Interview on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 4th 2011 2:37AM
'Rescue Me' - 'Brownies'Well things started off calmly enough this season on 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX), and surprisingly the fireworks aren't coming from Tommy's house, even though Sheila has become a constant fixture there.

Instead, it blew up at the firehouse after Tommy's interview went off the rails, and then aired on the news.

In reality, Tommy wasn't saying anything wrong, as the interviewer was asking questions designed to incite a negative reaction in him. He jumped down her throat at the thought of the FDNY being sexist and racist, then railed against the public perception of firefighters in general, before storming out of the interview.

Tommy Saves Maura Tierney From a Terrible Date on 'Rescue Me' (VIDEO)

'Rescue Me' - 'Press'Tommy Gavin finally sat down for his interview about the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX). His first statement? "There are no happy endings."

This was a rather melancholy episode, filled with reflections of those big moments in life, and death. Tommy was called in to save Kelly (Maura Tierney) from a disastrous date with her doctor, only to find out she's awaiting the results of her last round of chemo. Either she's good to go, or it all starts over.

Let's just take a moment to applaud the brilliance of Maura Tierney. We've known for years how great she is, but to come out of a real cancer situation and pour that emotion into this character, who's going through the same thing, was brave.

'Rescue Me': Black Shawn Asks For Tommy's Blessing to Marry His Daughter (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 21st 2011 6:00AM
'Rescue Me' S07/E02Tommy tried to reassert his authority in the household on this week's 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX), but we're talking about a house in which he is outnumbered four to one now that Sheila is basically there all the time.

Add to that the fact that the women have synchronized their cycles, it was no wonder that Tommy found himself in the feminine hygiene aisle. But this chain of events led to him running into Kelly (Maura Tierney), who chose to bring her real life struggle with breast cancer onto the show.

That encounter turned out to be perhaps the only bright spot for Tommy in the episode, as he also had his authority, such as it is, challenged by Black Shawn. After freaking out and getting drunk after Bart asked her to marry him last week, Colleen returned the favor by asking him to marry her.

So Bart decided to do the honorable thing and ask for Tommy's blessing on their union, though it turns out he really didn't care what Tommy thought. Or maybe he was giving Tommy a chance to step up and treat him with a little respect. Instead, Tommy opted for some childish poking and told him, "No."

So Bart called Colleen then and there and told her "Yes," while Tommy's jaw dropped. "I respect you. Now it's time for you to respect me," Bart said. "Okay, Dad?"

'Rescue Me' Items Head to Smithsonian, Callie Thorne Talks Final Season

'Rescue Me''Rescue Me' is fast approaching its swansong. As the cast, crew and fans start to ponder life without the drama, it's been revealed that creator Denis Leary is giving items -- including his firefighter costume and tools -- to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Executive producer Peter Tolan and actor Lenny Clarke (Teddy Gavin) will join Leary for a donation ceremony at 2PM ET Thursday.

The objects will join the museum's popular culture history collections. The Smithsonian says today's ceremony is the first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 and examine how it will be remembered and how life has changed.

'Rescue Me' Season Premiere: Tommy Shoots Up a Bar (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 14th 2011 6:09AM
'Rescue Me' - 'Mutha'The final season of 'Rescue Me' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX) kicked off in explosive fashion. After a five month jump, we're treated to almost a full hour where it seems like almost everyone is going to be happy and smiling.

Sheila and Janet are getting along like best girlfriends. We were convinced Sheila's advice about Janet not wanting sex during this pregnancy was some kind of scheme, but she was right on the money. How long can we really trust her, though? With that history, come on!

Everything was going well at the fire house -- hell, there weren't even any fires! -- and Black Shawn was ready to pop the question to Colleen. The only potential wrinkle was when Tommy found out Colleen was working at a bar; not the best idea for a recovering alcoholic.

Denis Leary Angles for a Cut of Bethenny Frankel's 'Skinnygirl' Millions on 'The View' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 12th 2011 6:00PM
Denis Leary wants some of Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl money on 'The View'Before she was a 'Real Housewife of New York City' or a millionaire entrepreneur, Bethenny Frankel was a cook for the show 'Rescue Me.' Tuesday on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), 'Rescue Me' star Denis Leary and Frankel were reunited, and Leary reminded her of a particular nickname he thinks gives him a claim to a slice of Frankel's "Skinnygirl" cocktail empire, which she sold for $120 million in April.

"I want a cut on the 120 million," said Leary. "First of all, I always talk about myself, and you probably remember this, I used to refer to myself as 'The Skinny Bitch.' That's my nickname for myself. Okay?" No dice. Frankel reminded him her imprint is Skinnygirl, not bitch. Leary said he'd settle for just a million.
