Ricky Gervais Discusses the Bad Economy -- Plus, Some Bad Jokes! (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 20th 2010 1:05AM
Ricky Gervais Discusses the Bad Economy -- Plus, Some Bad Jokes!Ricky Gervais is an English comedian, so some American concepts are foreign to him. For him, an elevator is a "lift," potato chips are "crisps" -- and he calls soccer "football." Meanwhile, as Americans, we just call soccer "boring." ... Oh, we're kidding. For us, soccer is just "soccer." (For the record, the Brits aren't thrilled by our version of "football" either.)

On his new stand-up special, 'Ricky Gervais: Out of England 2' (Sat., 10PM ET on HBO), Mr. Gervais discussed another instance of the Anglo-American cultural divide. One aspect of the U.S. that Ricky is confused by is ... our currently terrible economy.

"I know there's a recession on," he joked. " ... Someone told me [about it]." There was then a brief pause. "It really didn't affect me!" he added, cackling loudly with glee. Aw, we love you too, Ricky. "We can laugh about it now; no, come on!"

Ricky Gervais Makes Jon Stewart Hysterical on 'Daily Show' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Dec 15th 2010 8:50AM
Ricky Gervais Cracks Jokes on 'Daily Show'Jon Stewart probably intended to conduct a typical interview with Ricky Gervais, asking solid questions and exchanging the occasional quip. But the host of 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on COM) couldn't keep things simple with the comedian.

When Stewart remarked that his audience members have "vertebrae" (as opposed to saying "spine" or backbone"), Gervais called the late-night program "the cleverest show ever. It is. Until Stephen Hawking gets his own chat show," referring to the famous British physicist, who must use a voice synthesizer to speak.

Stewart put his head in his hands, perhaps unsure how to respond to a joke about the severely disabled scientist. The host began to laugh and turned away to compose himself. Stewart then countered with, "I was just imagining also, how Jay Leno would figure out how to f--- him over." This, in turn, got Gervais laughing.

Golden Globes Host Ricky Gervais Has Only Seen One of the Nominated Films (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 14th 2010 12:02PM
Ricky Gervais, 'Today'Back for his second straight year as host, Ricky Gervais admitted to Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira on 'Today' (Weekdays, 7AM on NBC) that of all the Golden Globe nominees, he's seen exactly one film: 'Inception.' "So that's got a good chance," he concluded.

Gervais was in fine form, sparring with the hosts, playing up his patented faux-arrogance while keeping things light and funny. After watching a commercial for the NBC broadcast of the 2011 Golden Globes on February 16, he noted, "I didn't hear my name until right at the end."

The Globes is always a bit of an odd duck, combining television and movie awards into the same event. And as Lauer described beautifully, "You've got an incredibly eclectic room. Half of them are three sheets to the wind, and you've got to hold it all together."

Ricky Gervais Made Jokes at His Mother's Funeral (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Dec 14th 2010 5:55AM
Ricky Gervais Talks Mom's Funeral on 'Late Show'For proof that no topic is sacred to Ricky Gervais, no subject or moment too sensitive, see Exhibit A: his own mother's funeral. Gervais described the scene on 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS).

As relatives wept around him, he kindly passed around tissues. But these weren't regular tissues. "I'd written something on each tissue, things like 'sniveling [beep],' things like 'you snotty pig,'" explained the comedian. "[The vicar's] thinking, 'I've never got laughs before.'"

'Louie' Moment: Louie's Doctor Kicks Him While He's Down (VIDEO)

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 8th 2010 9:40AM
Louis C.K. and Ricky Gervais in 'Louie' on FXLast night, FX closed out the first season of 'Louie' (Tuesdays at 11PM ET on FX) with two new episodes, both of which were of the same vignette-oriented, largely plotless tone as the rest of the season. But both were among the funniest episodes of the season, in both Louis C.K.'s caustic stand-up scenes and the scenes that involve the general mundane hell that is Louie's life.

The first episode of the night involved a weird newswoman-oriented dream and his fumbling attempts to hit on his buddy Pamela (Pamela Aldon), but the kicker was yet another interaction between Louie and his friend / doctor Ben, played by Ricky Gervais.

Ricky Gervais as a Naughty Doctor on 'Louie' (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 7th 2010 2:00PM
LouieOn Louis C.K.'s 'Louie' (Tue., 11PM on FX), Ricky Gervais popped up as one of Louie's old buddies who is now a doctor. Like any interaction between old buddies, insults were thrown around.

"You don't need a doctor, you need a time machine," Gervais as the doctor said. "Did no one tell you t--s are supposed to be on women, not men?"

Then it came time for Louie's rectal exam, a procedure men should take seriously, especially those over 40. But, in the middle of the exam, the doctor had a little fun with Louie and it was much more than the patient bargained for.
