Hearing for the First Time on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)
'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) provides deserving people with better surroundings. But what if you can't hear what surrounds you in the first place? On the new episode, the team provides a home -- but they also help a bunch of students feel more at home with themselves.Ty Pennington and his team must rebuild the Oregon School for the Deaf. This school helps the deaf community in that region, but they're suffering from a lack of funding. So the 'Makeover' squad shows up -- and they don't just want to change the housing.
The school's dormitories date from the 1950s, and now are structurally unsafe. Plus, they look like a "prison," according to one young man. The housing is rebuilt, but more than that, a greater effort is made. The team provides students with hearing aids, allowing them to hear the outside world ... for the first time ever.
What to Watch: October 25 - 31
Dead Set - Sunday October 31, 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, SpaceThis BAFTA-nominated series from the UK is just the latest example of how well Brits do zombies. The show has been running all month, but tonight you can catch all five episodes back-to-back. The premise is simple and elegant: a zombie outbreak coincides with the filming of a new season of 'Big Brother' and the contestants have no idea what's happening in the outside world. It falls onto Kelly, a young production assistant, to beat back the hordes of the undead from the studio. This is gore-heavy-- definitely not for kids.
Rob Zombie Dishes on David Caruso's Acting Limitations (VIDEO)
Appearing on 'Red Eye' (Weekdays 3 AM ET on Fox News) rocker and auteur Rob Zombie spilled the beans on directing David Caruso in an episode of 'CSI: Miami,' which Zombie called "the longest three weeks of my life."Red Eye host Greg Gutfeld egged Zombie on, saying he had heard that in terms of taking direction, Caruso can't do two things at once. Zombie paused for a moment, contemplating whether or not to dish on Caruso. But that moment passed quickly, and Zombie proceeded to tell a hilarious story about Caruso's acting limitations:
Rob Zombie Set to Direct 'CSI: Miami' Episode: We Pick the Plot
From grey Haddonfield in 'Halloween II' to sunny Miami ... the weather's getting better for Rob Zombie! The Hollywood Reporter brings news that the man behind 'The Devil's Rejects,' two 'Halloween' films and several of his own music videos will bring his nightmarish vision to an upcoming episode of 'CSI: Miami.' Zombie's knack for portraying the dark underbelly of American life -- and the strange and often dangerous citizens that dwell therein -- is perfect for 'CSI,' and we're sure the director will provide a unique spin on the show's familiar elements of bizarre crime and cultural tension.
The question is: What will best play to Rob Zombie's strengths on 'CSI: Miami?' Here are five possible plot lines for Zombie's episode:
Halloween type movies you can see for free
It's the season for scary movies - bad scary movies, good scary movies, campy scary movies, any kind of scary movie. And depending on what cable company you subscribe to, there are plenty of free offerings right now on demand. FearNet is the obvious go-to place for freebies, although it has its detractors hanging around this blog. One of the best choices available now is Return of the Living Dead III. Unless you're a hardcore horror geek, you may not know this one. And the plot -- a young couple near a military base are torn apart when she becomes one of the living dead -- may not sound exciting. But the first zombie onscreen is convincingly freaky, and the surprise ending is actually kind of a surprise.
FearNet also has Severed Ties, in which a severed arm comes back to life as a reptilian killing machine. And who doesn't like a good Garrett Morris/Oliver Reed team-up? And there are a couple of bigger movies, like Brian DePalma's Body Double and Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses, and Sleepaway Camp II and III, featuring Pamela Springsteen (Bruce's sister).
How will you watch Rob Zombie's El Superbeasto?
Remember the days when a movie came out in theaters, then you waited a year or so for it to come out on video (and going back a bit further, waited for it to be in on VHS or Beta, depending on which player you had), and then waited even longer for it to hit television? With cable on demand and quick transitions to DVD, that timeframe has been completely destroyed for me. I watched Bobcat Goldthwait's superb film World's Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams in a beautifully understated performance) on demand a couple of weeks ago. It's out in theaters this weekend.
I'm also looking forward to seeing Rob Zombie's The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Zombie has a great, dark imagination, and the voice talent he's assembled for this animated feature is tremendous. Rosario Dawson and Paul Giamatti are the big names, and there is a laundry list of great cult actors like Sheri Moon Zombie, Danny Trejo, Clint Howard, and the always entertaining Sid Haig. I also have a soft spot for stand-up comedians, since I cover that world often, and this boasts Tom Kenny (yes, he is Spongebob), Brian Posehn, and Harland Williams.
Right now on Cinematical
The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:
- I do not ever, under any circumstances, wish to see Andy Griffith's "O" face. But if you're into that kind of thing, here ya go.
- For all of you Twihards out there: Cinematical has new images from New Moon.
- "Okay. It's like The Blob, but you know, without the blob thing. But it's totally a remake of The Blob. Get it?" It sounds like that's kind of how Rob Zombie's movie pitch went.
- I'm going to see The Final Destination this weekend. I have never seen any of the other movies in the series, and I do not give a single crap about the "plot" or "characters." The point is, it is in 3-D and there are crazy body parts flying around and people getting killed in very awkward ways. Movie WIN.
- Cinematical is not very happy about the Heathers TV show that is in the works.
Rob Zombie hosts TCM late nights
Rob Zombie will be hosting TCM Underground starting Friday, October 13. The first movie to be shown will be Ed Wood's classic trainwreck, Plan 9 from Outer Space, followed by another Wood film, Bride of the Monster. The movies, according to the official site, will start "around 2 am." Other cult movies to be shown in future episodes include The Crazies, Tokyo Drifter, Dementia 13, The Honeymoon Killers and Lonely Hearts. If you're a fan of these memorable midnight movies, or you just like to talk back to the screen a la Mystery Science Theater 3000, you might want to check these out. Plus, they're on at just the right time so you can enjoy them after stumbling home from a night of heavy partying, or from a night of helping elderly people reach items on the top shelf at Walgreens. You know, whatever it is you do with your Friday nights.
