Seinfeld to get The Comedian Award, whatever the hell that is
by Joel Keller, posted Mar 30th 2007 2:43PM
On Sunday, HBO will air a special called Jerry Seinfeld: The Comedian Award, where the legendary stand-up comedian and sitcom star will be honored by The Comedy Festival. The host of the special will be CNN's Anderson Cooper, and fellow stand-ups Robert Klein, Chris Rock, and Garry Shandling will be on hand.Never heard of The Comedian Award? Well, don't feel too bad about that; Jerry is the award's first recipient. And the festival that is honoring Jerry is not the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen nor the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. It's The Comedy Festival, whose second annual edition was held last November in Las Vegas. So I hope Jerry treats this honor with the correct amount of reverence: in other words, none. I'm pretty confident that's exactly what's going to happen; comedians don't take comedy awards that seriously to begin with. Why should they start now?

Review: Dangerfield gets the Legends treatment in fun documentary
by Joel Keller, posted Sep 9th 2006 11:24AM
The ill-fitting blue suit and red tie. The sweat-soaked shirt. The bulging eyes and fidgety manner. The rapid-fire jokes about getting "no respect." Rodney Dangerfield was in the Pantheon of comedy greats for all those reasons, but his fantastic stand-up comedy was just a part of his legacy, as we find out in the fun Comedy Central documentary Legends: Rodney Dangerfield, which airs Sunday night at 9.This is the first in CC's Legends series, where the lives of comic giants are examined through interviews with the stars that were influenced by them. In this episode, the mega-stars come out to talk about the man they equally admire and are indebted to: Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Robert Klein, Bob Saget, Stiller & Meara, Bill Murray, Jay Leno, Norm MacDonald, Jeff Foxworthy, Adam Sandler, Sandra Bernhardt, Susie Essman, Ray Ramone, Bill Maher and Rob Schneider all provide commentary on how Rodney influenced their careers from afar, and how gracious he was with his knowledge and advice.
Before Idol, there was The Original Amateur Hour
by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 19th 2006 6:22PM
Yes, believe it or not,
shows like American Idol and Star Search were not the first to showcase amateur talent from across
the country. Premiering in 1948, a show titled The Original Amateur Hour launched the careers of people such
as Pat Boone, Robert Klein, Connie Francis and Ann-Margret (even a young Frank Sinatra sang on the radio version of the
show!). The New York Times reviews the new DVD set
and declares it hit and miss. The thing I hate about the review is the assertion by the writer that the only people who will enjoy this are people in their 90s. Um...huh? I think it can enjoyed by people who like this time of music/comedy, whether you're 30 or 90. She says the show is "TV for the very old." What a lame thing to say.
