It was the "Year of the Woman" on Project Runway
It wasn't a fierce season for Project Runway. No Cristian Soriano to spice things up. No Wendy Pepper either, speaking of spicy. That said, as the show wrapped up and three designers presented their collections at Fashion Week, the competitive juices were flowing and I was definitely into it. Maybe not as much as previous years, but the Project Runway formula still worked. And most significantly, the final three were all women. As Tim Gunn pointed out, it was the year of the woman on Project Runway. All in all, the finale wasn't exactly up to the level of previous seasons. The personalities weren't as dramatic or defined. There was no Jeffrey to hate. No pregnant Laura to root for. And no Jay or Santino to giggle over. It's interesting that even Tim Gunn, before this season aired, had said that this group wasn't as distinctive as some other seasons. As usual, Tim was right.
The Five: Your Project Runway Audition Guide
Project Runway is gearing up for a four city casting tour beginning March 30th in Los Angeles and continuing to Chicago, Miami and New York City. If you want to make the season four cut, you'll need to bring three garments of your own design, a picture portfolio and your completed application - soon to be available via BravoTV.com. And, don't worry, Tim Gunn will be back despite his many extracurricular activities. In the interest of helping further your design career, I've put together a brief primer for success on Project Runway - from the auditions to the final catwalk.
Project Runway's CD release
With the exception of Santino's homemade soundtrack in Season Two, I always wondered whether or not we were hearing the music the Project Runway designers actually chose for their Fashion Week outings.I just don't believe that punk rocker Jeff Sebelia or hip-hop head Michael Knight would willingly send their models down the runway to the innocuous, down-tempo soundscape we heard on Bravo.
I figured copyright issues got in the way of us figuring out whether Sebelia would drop a Stooges track on us.
Project Runway: High Flying Fashion
(S03E08) There was a bit of a mix-up last week, so I'm sorry that you all couldn't come here to vent your frustrations about the previous episode. Boy, oh boy, never has an episode called for so much venting. Vincent thew a basic black dress in with massive beige lapels... and won. The lapels were straight out of the 80s and clown-ish. If the lapels weren't so floppy, I would have liked it a little more. I think he only won because just about everyone else failed to flatter their plus-sized models. So, Robert was booted for being boring again, Vincent won, and Satan roared with laughter as he landed his triple axel jump.Project Runway: Iconic Statement
(S03E05) This episode switched things up a bit. Instead of the other way around, the models chose the designers they wanted. Of course, some of the designers were uncomfortable with the feeling of not being in control in this situation. Their anxiety was made even worse when the designers were challenged to re-create a look for a fashion icon... a fashion icon that they'd have no say in choosing. Their models picked from a selection of icons, ranging from Madonna to Katharine Hepburn to Twiggy. Some designers were ecstatic with their assignments, others were totally clueless (cough cough, his name starts with a "B" and ends with "Radley").Project Runway: Finale
Chloe wins! Chloe? Chloe. I didn't really want Chloe to win.
I really liked her stuff in the beginning, but I absolutely hated her collection for Fashion Week. I know the judges
kept saying how much she "knows women" and understands a "woman's body", but my body doesn't
look like a couch. I'm not a La-Z-Boy recliner and no way would I want to be covered with half of that
dreadful stuff she used. Everything was so heavy and overdone. I know that fashion shows are supposed to be about
drama and "the show", but I found her stuff borderline laughable. It looked like the
1980s barfed all over her collection. And I thought her 13th outfit was stupid, especially those pockets that
Diana slaved over. I just have so many mixed feelings about Chloe winning because while I like her, I
don't love her.
And Santino...
Project Runway: Makeover Competition
I was absolutely giddy when I heard what this week's
competition would be. The designers get to create complete head-to-toe makeovers for each other. Yeah, I love makeover
shows. Fun, fun, fun. Hmmm, not so fun. A lot of fighting on this week's episode and I think we all know who was at the
center of it...Santino.Project Runway: Garden Party Competition
I didn't think anything could outshine an
episode of dresses made of plants. And nothing can...except maybe Santino's Tim impression. I love the Tim impression!
It's the greatest thing about Santino. They seriously should have featured it on the show way back in week one. If they
would have, I probably wouldn't have built up this hatred towards Santino. Well, I don't hate him...it's just so hard to
completely love him. He is Santino. But the Tim impression was absolutely marvelous, and I love the fact that
the extended version featured a fictionalized love quarrel between Tim and Andrae at the Red Lobster. Not enough gay
fashion fights happen at the Red Lobster, but they should!Project Runway: The Inspiration Competition
I think that this week's theme for the competition
was the most ambiguous one to date. Designers were given a digital camera and told to hit the streets of New York for a
hour and take pictures of things that inspire them. Then they were to take their most inspiring photograph and turn it
into the most amazing design ever. Talk about having a lot to work with. The designers have no excuse to screw this one
up. The sky is the limit.Project Runway: Banana Republic Competition
Is Santino out of his damn mind? Forget about the fact that he
kicked off the show looking like the Unabomber by using his sweatshirt as a makeshift toupee for his big bald head. (Not
that I disapprove of covering up that monstrosity.) But what's up with him insulting Michael Kors? Insinuating that Mr.
Kors only knows the fashion preferences of old people, isn't a good way to kiss up to the judges. It appears to be that
Andrae finally got off the crazy train and handed his ticket to Santino.Project Runway: The Nicky Hilton Competition
When I heard the designers were going to be designing a party dress for a famous
New York socialite, I knew it had to be Paris Hilton. It just had to be. The girl makes cameos in all the things I love
-- burger commercials, The OC, porn. As turns out, it was her more respectable, more innocent (?) sister Nicky,
who was the mystery socialite. The Project Runway socialite
It's
been two weeks without Project Runway and it already feels like a little part
of me has died. Pathetic? Quite possibly. Obsessed? Definitely. To keep me occupied, I've been surfing around and
looking up all things Project Runway, including Santino's
MySpace and the sneaky news that Kevin Johnn
was the one that drew the moustache on Wendy Pepper's photograph in Season One (not really sure if that's true or not,
but I feel like there's a sense of closure in my life... again, I'm obsessed).I also came across a spoiler for this week's show. Fashion Week Daily has got the scoop on the identity of the mystery socialite they have to make an outfit for. I can't say I'm really surprised by the choice... Read on if you want to find out (or you can just tune in on Wednesday like everyone else)...
