Who Scored Big in Week 2 of SNL's Relevancy Poll?

by Mike Ryan, posted Oct 3rd 2011 10:30AM
Even though the results were disappointing, this week's 'SNL' was, again, very host-centric – meaning there wasn't a ton of lead-role airtime to go around for cast members. Though, Jay Pharoah managed to get his first sketch of the season on the air, while poor Paul Brittain was nearly shut out. But who leads the poll after the second week of the season? A show hosted by 'Bridesmaids' star Melissa McCarthy? It should be no surprise that the top spot goes to...

Melissa McCarthy Was Willing to Get Dirty for 'SNL' Debut (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 3rd 2011 1:00AM
Melissa McCarthy, 'Saturday Night Live'Say what you will about the writing quality or caliber of sketches on 'Saturday Night Live' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC), but there is no denying that Melissa McCarthy gave as committed a performance as we've ever seen.

In some cases, she carried the laughs almost entirely by herself. She tackled physical comedy, like throwing herself down a flight of stairs multiple times, and wasn't afraid to get dirty, like in her explosive performance in the Hidden Valley Ranch sketch.

Her character was so eager to be the best taste-tester, that at one point she exploded an entire bottle of the dressing all over her face and chest, and just kept eating it and going on. To their credit, no one broke character during this hilarious moment, which was easily a highlight of the night.

'SNL' Scorecard: Was Melissa McCarthy Even Given a Chance?

by Mike Ryan, posted Oct 2nd 2011 1:55PM

Someday Melissa McCarthy will be a good 'SNL' host. Her name will be mentioned alongside recent 'SNL' hosting phenoms like Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. Hell, if given some better than average material last night to back up her deliveries, we may already be mentioning her name as part of this class. Unfortunately, McCarthy did what she could with a writing staff that seemed to take the week off from writing anything interesting and, instead, just gave her a few sketches that resembled poor man's clones of 'Bridesmaids.' To be fair, this was probably to be expected with her first outing immediately following her breakthrough comedy role. But, now that this is out of the way, hopefully, next time, the writing staff will giver her more things to do than pour food on her head and have her fall down a flight of stairs. Alas, on to the scorecard...

Steve Martin Crashes Alec Baldwin's Record-Setting 'SNL' Hosting Stint (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 26th 2011 3:00AM
Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin, 'Saturday Night Live'When it was realized that Alec Baldwin hosting this season premiere of 'Saturday Night Live' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC) would give him the all-time hosting record over Steve Martin, we all assumed that Martin would make an appearance. The question was how and when.

Well, he showed up right away, during Baldwin's monologue touting his 16th time hosting. Martin was surprisingly gracious, and only wanted to make sure Baldwin wasn't using any performance enhancing drugs.

So they staged a fake drug test, with Martin analyzing Baldwin's urine by swishing it in his mouth -- he only detected Cialis. It was a fun bit, but much tamer than perhaps we would have expected. No jealousy or bitterness from Martin? We did, however, love when he asked surprise guest Seth Rogen if his being there counted as hosting. It doesn't.

Alec Baldwin Breaks 'SNL' Record by Hosting Season 37 Premiere

by Catherine Lawson, posted Aug 3rd 2011 5:00AM
Alec BaldwinHis Schweddy Balls are already the stuff of legend, and now 'Saturday Night Live' frequent flyer Alec Baldwin is set to break the long-running show's hosting record.

Baldwin is currently tied with Steve Martin for the 'SNL' record after he hosted the show for the 15th time last year. However, executive producer Lorne Michaels told reporters that Baldwin is now set to break Martin's record by hosting the Season 37 premiere in the fall.

'Mike & Molly' star Melissa McCarthy is lined up to host the second episode of the new season.

Baldwin pulls double duty as the star of Michaels' other NBC show, '30 Rock,' which is, of course, a fictionalized version of 'SNL.'

Ben & Jerry's Readying a 'Saturday Night Live' Flavor?

by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 14th 2011 11:00AM
Saturday Night Live, Schweddy BallsThe famous 'Saturday Night Live' 'Delicious Dish' sketch with Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer and Alec Baldwin is rumored to become a Ben & Jerry's flavor just in time for the holidays. Nothing says Christmastime like Schweddy Balls!

Gasteyer let the news slip during a recent interview with NY1. "[The sketch] has this crazy, massive popularity that's kind of had a half life since I left the show," she said. "Ben & Jerry's is coming out with a Schweddy Balls ice cream for Christmas this year."

According to Gothamist, a Ben & Jerry's representative wouldn't confirm or deny the news, citing the desire for an element of surprise.

'SNL' veteran Jimmy Fallon recently got his own Ben & Jerry's flavor. Comedian Stephen Colbert and musician Willie Nelson have also received that honor.

'Saturday Night Live' - 'Ryan Phillippe/Ke$Ha' Recap

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 18th 2010 1:00PM

All in all, a pretty mediocre episode. Ryan Phillippe didn't seem to stretch himself in any way. Well, okay, okay, he dressed up as a chick for a sketch, but apart from that, there was no palpable attempt to celebrate the fact that Ryan Phillippe was hosting or play to his strengths. I mean, I won't pretend I know what those particular strengths are, but 'Saturday Night Live' usually does a fair job of letting hosts try something dramatically out of their comfort zone or play up something unexpected. There was no sense of that in this episode.

Maybe they wanted to keep the episode toned down to counter whatever amount of crazy Ke$Ha wanted to unleash. By the way, that girl looks like she perpetually smells like drugstore watermelon body spray and BO. If that's the look she's going for, she's really nailing it.

What to Watch: April 15

'Saturday Night Live in the 2000s: Time and Again' (9PM, NBC)
Former and current cast members, as well as great hosts like Justin Timberlake, Alec Baldwin and Christopher Walken, recall the best 'SNL' moments of the 2000s in this fun clip special, from 'Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy' ("He'll fix your computer, but then he's gonna make fun of you") and 'Appalachian Emergency Room' ("What is it this time, Tyler?") to 'Deep House Dish' ("Ooowee, T'Shane!') and, of course, the instant classic 'D*ck in a Box,' which Timberlake discusses as a viral video he and co-star Andy Samberg had no idea would become such a pop culture phenomenon. There's also the political spoofs (Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and Fred Armisen as New Jersey-hatin' New York Governor David Paterson), Bill Hader's spot on Vincent Price and more Kristen Wiig than any 'SNL' fan needs, and, one of the series' all-time most famous skits, which viewers will remember with just two words: "More cowbell!"
