Pretty Little LiarsIt looks like A's sticking around to terrorize the girls of 'Pretty Little Liars' a little while longer -- ABC Family announced today that the freshman show, along with veteran series 'Secret Life of the American Teenager,' have been given early season renewals.

'Pretty Little Liars' will be back for season 2 and 'Secret Life' for season 4 during the 2011-12 season. The announcement was made during ABC Family's panel at the Television Critics Association press tour. Earlier in the day, ABC announced the renewal of six of its flagship shows.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 21st 2009 7:04PM
Family GuyHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Yes, we're in the middle of a slow period when it comes to new DVD releases. You would think there would be more new things released during the holidays, but I guess all of the companies released everything in the months of October and November. But we do have a few DVD sets for TV fans, including another Star Wars takeoff by the folks at Family Guy and a complete series set for Taxi (along with the season five set, the last season).

Huh. I always thought Taxi lasted a few more seasons than that. Then again I haven't seen an episode of the show in over ten years.

  • Family Guy - Something Something Something Dark Side
  • Guyver - Complete Series (Viridian Collection)
  • Kyle XY - Season 3
  • The Secret Life of the American Teenager - Season 3
  • Taxi - Season 5 and Complete Series

The Secret Life of the American TeenagerMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' (8PM, ABC Family) 2nd summer finale
It's the summer finale and that likely means a cliffhanger or two, especially since everyone is experiencing relationship woes. Grace and Jack seem to be at an impasse when they can't agree on some major decisions, while Amy and Ben are also struggling and Adrian and Ricky go to counseling. And then there's Amy's mom Anne, who goes into labor, and may not have enough time to make it to the hospital. Grace and Jack hit a roadblock; Amy and Ben try to work on their relationship.

Will James Gandolfini ever be anything but Tony Soprano?

by Jane Boursaw, posted Aug 7th 2009 7:30PM
James Gandolfini in In the LoopI watched the feature film In the Loop the other day, a documentary-style comedy that looks behind the scenes of the British and U.S. governments. James Gandolfini plays Lt. Gen. George Miller, and all I could think was, "Hey, there's Tony Soprano in a U.S. military uniform." I think his character may have even said something along the lines of, "I'll break your kneecaps if..."

I know James Gandolfini has done a lot of projects since The Sopranos, but Tony Soprano is so cemented in my mind, I wonder if I'll ever see him as anything else. I have the same reaction when I see Steve Schirripa playing Leo on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. "Hey, that's Bobby Baccalieri!"

Mayim Bialik talks about her faith and her return to acting

saving grace mayim bialik
I suppose if you want to be cynical, you could say that Mayim Bialik is in the midst of a comeback, with several recent television roles, including guest stints on Bones, Secret Life of the American Teenager, and now, Saving Grace. However, it's not as though the erstwhile star of Blossom has spent the last fifteen years sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. After the series' end, she attended UCLA, got married, had two children, and even earned her PhD last year.

Ms. (er, Dr.) Bialik has indeed been busy, but she is now looking to make her way back into Hollywood. She's guest-starring on Saving Grace tonight as Esther, a Hasidic Jewish mother of seven, whose own mother is found murdered in a field full of dead cows. I spoke with Mayim about Saving Grace, the lasting legacy of Blossom, and how she hopes people see her today.

Secret Life of the American Teenager: Par for the Course - open thread

Secret Life of the American Teenager
The other night I was watching a special on BBC America about all of the pregnant girls in the Gloucester, MA (where I was born) high school. That has nothing to do with this show, of course, but every time I see a show about a pregnant teen I think of that real-life story. I'm waiting for the inevitable movie that Lifetime will make about the situation.

Last night's episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager was about how Ben's preoccupation with sex is causing trouble with Amy. More than the trouble it has already caused, that is. Yo, Adrian!

Secret Life of the American Teenager: The Big One (season premiere) - open thread

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 23rd 2009 10:27AM
Secret Life of the American TeenagerLast night was the second season premiere of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a show that's really superficial. That's not me saying that, it's Tom Shales at the Washington Post, who says that the show is "an unabashed throwback to soaps of ages past" and one that "makes no attempt to camouflage artifice and superficiality." And I think he likes the show (though it sounds like he hasn't watched a soap opera since 1976).

What did you think of the season opener?

Candace Cameron (Bure) returning to television on Make It or Break It tonight

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 22nd 2009 3:22PM
Candace Cameron BureWe all watched her grow up on Full House and then we watched her disappear from our television screens, seemingly forever. I don't know if I'll go so far as to say Candace Cameron was to the early '90s what Alyssa Milano was to the late '80s, but that's because I'll be forever loyal to my boyhood crush on Samantha Micelli. But while Milano has been on the airwaves virtually every season since the question of Who's the Boss? was answered when the network canceled it, not so for Cameron.

She got married and went off to raise her kids for ten years, giving us only a few appearances in that time. Now 33 and ready to get back to work full time, Candace Cameron Bure will be one of the stars in ABC Family's gymnastic-themed Make It or Break It, premiering tonight at 9pm ET.
