Prince Charming Saves Baby Emma From the Curse on 'Once Upon a Time' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 24th 2011 2:45AM
'Once Upon a Time' - 'Pilot'The Alphabet fired the first volley in the great 2011 war of the fairy tales with the premiere of 'Once Upon a Time' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). The Peacock returns fire with 'Grimm' this Friday, though at first glance the two series look to be very different.

Framed much like a fairy tale itself, 'Time' sees the fairy tale characters trapped in Storybrook, Maine. There time stands still thanks to a curse from the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), who herself fell victim to the curse. That appears to be part of her plan, though. That said, it's unclear if the "human" Queen, who is the mayor of Storybrook, knows the truth or not.

Tom Kane Gets a Secret Diagnosis That Could Change Everything on 'Boss' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 24th 2011 1:00AM
'Boss' - 'Pilot'With the premiere of 'Boss' (Fri., 10PM ET on Starz) any remaining vestiges of Frasier Crane that we saw when Kelsey Grammer would appear on other shows fell to the side. Here was a commanding orator, a powerful and driven man, and a very serious man.

We first met him at perhaps one of the lowest points of his life. But even when getting the diagnosis that spelled out a very unpleasant fate at the hands of a disease there is no cure for, Tom Kane (Grammer) exuded poise and grace. At least, so long as there was anyone around.

Craig Learns How Not to Win the Girl Back on Her Wedding Day on 'Man Up!' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 19th 2011 1:30AM
'Man Up!' - 'Pilot'Right away, my firsts instinct when watching 'Man Up!' (Tue., 8:30PM ET on ABC) was that the network has another 'Cougar Town' on their hands, with the slight difference that none of these actors are household names.

What I mean is that the show seems to have the potential to be far greater than the gimmicky premise it's been saddled with. And just like 'Cougar Town' works against that show as a title, I think 'Man Up!' will work against this one.

'Last Man Standing': Tim Allen Returns to TV Worried About Modern Men (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 12th 2011 1:45AM
'Last Man Standing' - 'Pilot'With 'How to Be a Gentleman' already cancelled while female-lead comedies are coming out strong, are men in trouble this season? There were three "manly men" sitcoms in the pipes and one's down already. But 'Last Man Standing' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC) has the star power of Tim Allen, who's fought this battle of manliness before.

Allen brings every bit of Tim Taylor to Mike Baxter, which turns out to be exactly why it works. Who would have thought that the same schtick could work again two decades after 'Home Improvement' launched, but Allen's charm manages to carry the day.

Amy Goes From Enraged to 'Enlightened' in Series Premiere (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 11th 2011 6:30AM
'Enlightened' - 'Pilot'It was an abrupt emotional turnaround in the opening minutes of 'Enlightened' (Mon., 9:30PM ET on HBO). When we first meet Amy (Laura Dern) she is in full meltdown mode, ranting and raving and looking a lot like Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining.'

A quick cut later and she's been enjoying an enlightening and calming experience in Hawaii and is now ready to return to her old life, whether they want her or not. A quick threat of a lawsuit if she isn't rehired means a very awkward first day, but that's for next week's episode.

'The Rosie Show' Premieres With Russell Brand's Nude Protest (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 11th 2011 12:00AM
Russell Brand, 'The Rosie Show'Rosie O'Donnell is back and in prime time with her new live venture. 'The Rosie Show' (Mon., 7PM ET on OWN) welcomed comedian Russell Brand, who has recently been outed as Rosie's latest "crush."

He talked about his nude protest against capitalism that didn't work as well as he might have hoped. Brand wound up getting arrested for indecent exposure, which he also took issue with.

"It was actually just a very classical nude form on what I'd like to say was a very cold day," he said.

Final tally for Brand's protest? "Capitalism succeeded, my naked body failed."

'American Horror Story': Ben Gets a Warning About the House He'll Surely Ignore (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 6th 2011 3:45AM
'American Horror Story' - 'Pilot'After much anticipation, 'American Horror Story' (Wed., 10PM ET on FX) finally premiered, and it's about as twisted, convoluted and bizarre as you could hope. Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk seem to be happy to have returned to FX, where they created 'Nip/Tuck.'

'AHS' brings plenty of sex appeal with its horror, which has elements of 'The Shining' and other psychological horrors. Thankfully, they don't appear to have gone the slasher route with this one, preferring to do a lot of their work in the dark and in the mind.

Can Bodybuilders Really Not Lift a 112-lb. Woman on 'Penn & Teller Tell a Lie'? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 6th 2011 2:45AM
'Penn & Teller Tell a Lie'Penn & Teller are back with a new show, and this time they're lying to us. 'Penn & Teller Tell a Lie' (Wed., 10PM ET on Discovery) finds the pair sharing with us seven surprising truths about the world. Six of them are absolutely true, while one is a lie.

They don't reveal the lie until the end, leaving you to question each story as it unfolds. Possibly the craziest one from the premiere was the claim that a 112-lb. woman could make it to where even bodybuilders couldn't lift her up.

We watched as one guy picked her up with ease. Then, on the second try, he couldn't budge her an inch. Is this really possible?

Carrie May Have Uncovered Evidence Against Brody on 'Homeland' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 3rd 2011 6:15AM
'Homeland' - 'Pilot'After much anticipation, the star-studded 'Homeland' (Sun., 10PM ET on Showtime) finally premiered, and it delivered on every level. Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin are a revelation together, with Danes absolutely smashing a very unpredictable and uncertain role.

Carrie Mathison is already one of the most fascinating lead characters on television. We come out of this premiere with no real grasp on whether she's crazy and grasping at straws, or crazy but on to something really big. Yes, we're pretty sure, she's crazy, but it's the kind of crazy that draws you into her world.

'Dexter' Season 6 Premiere Recap: Creepy Religious Murders and a High School Reunion

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 2nd 2011 10:35PM
Season 6 of 'Dexter' jumped forward a year, with Lumen out of the picture and America's favorite serial killer of serial killers back in the swing of things. By back in the swing of things, we mean of course, back to swinging his blade against Miami's murderers and criminals.

In one of the opening scenes, Dexter traps two first responders who had been killing patients and shocks them to death, proving why TV doctors must always yell, "Clear!" before using a defibrillator. Later, at a high school reunion, he tracks a jock who killed his wife, and after some flag-football forensics, introduces him to his table, too.

The rest of the episode took us to Dexter's 20-year high school reunion and introduced a pair of creepy, religiously inspired serial killers. Read more about the premiere after the jump.

City Dad Meets Suburban Mom, Thinks Her Too Trusting on 'Suburgatory' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 29th 2011 12:45AM
'Suburgatory' - 'Pilot''Suburgatory' (Wed., 8:30PM ET on ABC) follows the perhaps rash decision of single father to move his daughter from the bright lights of Manhattan to the suburbs. But this surreal little community is more like a cross between 'The Stepford Wives' and 'Edward Scissorhands' than any real suburban neighborhood.

Teenager daughter Tessa is understandably freaked out and uncomfortable in her new environment, but it's nice to see that the writers haven't forgotten that her father George would be just as out of place. We loved both of them freaking out over how quiet it is at night.

Zoe Finds Out Why Dr. Wilkes Was So Interested in Her on 'Hart of Dixie' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 27th 2011 3:00AM
'Hart of Dixie' series premiereIt's been four years since we said goodbye to Summer Roberts on the series finale of 'The OC,' and with her Rachel Bilson. She's made a few appearances in film and on television since then, but she hasn't been with us on a regular basis, until 'Hart of Dixie' (Mon., 9PM ET on The CW).

In this new series, Bilson plays Dr. Zoe Hart, who wants to be a big-time surgeon, but is advised she needs to work on her bedside manner. Throughout her career, she's been plagued by postcards from a doctor in Alabama, offering to let her work by his side.

Finally, on her last hope, she heads down to take him up on his offer for a year so she can get her desired career back on track. But that's when everything goes sideways.

A Dozen Big 'Terra Nova' Questions (With Some Answers from a Dino Drama Insider)

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 26th 2011 10:01PM
'Terra Nova,' which I reviewed here, has been one of the most anticipated television programs of the year, and if you're like me, you had a number of questions once the two-hour pilot ended.

What's up with the Sixers? How crazy will the people vs. dino battles get? Will the teen son become less annoying?

As luck would have it, I spoke to 'Terra Nova' executive producer Rene Echevarria in August, and I was able to ask him some of the questions I had (I'd only seen the first hour of the pilot at that point, or I would have asked him more).

In any event, here are a dozen of the most pressing questions I had, and I'd love to get your answers to those queries, as well as your theories or predictions about where the show will go from here. And of course, I've included Echavarria's answers to various queries where relevant.

Spoilers ahoy, obviously. If you haven't seen the 'Terra Nova' premiere, stop reading now.

'Pan Am' Premiere: Kate Takes on a US Intelligence Assignment (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 26th 2011 6:45AM
'Pan Am' - 'Pilot'There's a lot more going on with 'Pan Am' (Sun., 10PM ET on ABC) than pretty girls in form-fitting stewardess uniforms. Set in the depths of the cold war, we got things started right away with one of our stewardesses, Kate (Kelli Garner), tasked to make a document switch to help a Russian man get detained at a stop.

She spent much of the flight figuring out how to change his passport without him knowing, and through some ingenuity and quick thinking on her feet, despite plenty of other distractions, she got the job done.

And then she found out it wasn't the job she thought at all.

Jenna is Jealous of Husband Galen's Sexy Scenes, on 'Dirty Soap' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 26th 2011 6:30AM
Jenna Gering, 'Dirty Soap'Some things just don't make sense. Jenna Gering has been an actress for more than 15 years. She's married to fellow actor Galen Gering, a 'Days of Our Lives' cast member. And yet, as we saw on the premiere of 'Dirty Soap' (Sun., 10PM ET on E!), she gets jealous of his romantic scenes on the show.

We'll admit it's a little awkward that he's in bed with another woman her young children know, as that clearly made for an uncomfortable conversation for her, but how can you be the jealous type and live in that world? Did she think he could somehow avoid sex and romance on a soap opera?

And, of course, we suppose she's never had to have an intimate scene in any of her films, and would refuse them if they came up?
