'Community' Behind the Scenes: Meet the Show's Makeup, Prop & Costume Pros (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Apr 18th 2011 12:00PM
'Community' has done some pretty epic things in its two seasons on the air. I mean, just look at this cast:
The cast of 'Community'

But none of it would be possible without the people behind the scenes: the makeup artists who lovingly applied Yvette Nicole Brown's beard for the 'Pulp Fiction' homage; the props person who meticulously crafted the claymation figures, like Gillian Jacobs' Britta Bot, for the Christmas episode; and the imaginative costumers who turn Jim Rash into Dean Pelton, the spectacle, week after week.

Not only do these people have the vision to bring the scripts to life, they also have stories. Lots and lots of good stories.

'The Vampire Diaries' Cast Talks Klaus & Season 3 Wishes (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Apr 14th 2011 9:00AM
Joseph Morgan as Klaus, 'The Vampire Diaries'Have you heard? Klaus is coming.

Yes, 'Vampire Diaries' fans, I know that's all anyone can talk about these days, but come on -- the guy is an Original. We've witnessed some pretty powerful supernatural stuff on that show, but Klaus' arrival will absolutely be the craziest thing we've seen yet.

We hit the Atlanta set of 'The Vampire Diaries' to catch up with the cast and talk all about the O.G. fanged one's arrival in Mystic Falls. Who's met Klaus so far? And who's gone head-to-head with him? "Actually I've just shot one scene with him so far," Paul Wesley revealed. "It was pretty submissive ... one of us was relatively submissive. [laughs]"

Katerina Graham dished about Bonnie's inevitable showdown with Klaus: "She's the one person -- that's been revealed -- that can stop him. ... So I don't think she's expecting to just fly to Hawaii and forget about him for a while."

The 'Vampire Diaries' Cast Talks Twitter & Who Convinced Paul Wesley to Tweet (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Apr 5th 2011 10:00AM
'The Vampire Diaries' finally returns this week (Thurs., April 7, 8PM ET on The CW), but if you're like me, you've been keeping up with the cast on Twitter over this way too long hiatus.

Since there's been little news lately about what's coming next -- save the arrival of Klaus, who'll be played by Joseph Morgan -- it was huge news when Stefan Salvatore himself, Paul Wesley, finally joined Twitter after years of refusing.

The Vampire Diaries

We hit the 'Vampire Diaries' set in Atlanta to catch up with Paul and costars Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Candice Accola, Zach Roerig, Kat Graham, Steven McQueen, Matt Davis and Sara Canning. They all opened up about who they follow on Twitter and decided who gets credit for finally getting Paul to tweet.

'Chaos' Set Visit: The Stars Talk Cool Spy Stuff & Their New Show

by Maggie Furlong, posted Apr 1st 2011 5:00PM
What do you get when you cross 'Alias'-like action with the bumbling ineptitude of 'Get Smart''s Agent 86? Well it's the opposite of CONTROL -- CBS is calling it 'Chaos' (premieres Fri., Apr. 1, 8PM ET on CBS).

Following agents of the CIA's Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services (CHAOS), this new comedic drama gives a humorous spin to the high-risk missions these CIA C-listers are assigned to under the most ridiculous of circumstances.

The cast of 'Chaos' on CBS

The show's cast includes 'Six Feet Under' alum Freddy Rodriguez as wide-eyed new recruit Rick Martinez; Eric Close as Michael Dorset, the leader of the team; sneaky Scotsman Billy Collins, played by James Murray; and Tim Blake Nelson as Casey Malick, an unassuming master of martial arts.

'Castle' Set Visit: Castle & Beckett Get Soapy With 'One Life to Lose' (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Mar 16th 2011 4:30PM
Castle, 'One Life to Lose'Long before 'Castle' became a ratings hit, Nathan Fillion was on 'One Life to Live.' Now Castle and Beckett are investigating a gruesome murder on the set of fictional soap 'Temptation Lane' (Mon., March 21, 10PM ET on ABC), which was actually shot on the set of real-life soap 'All My Children' with cameos from two of its stars.

Does that make any sense? All you need to know is it's got everything a great 'Castle' episode should, including guest spots from some pretty cool names and a few inside jokes.

Cleverly titled 'One Life to Lose,' the episode shows Beckett (Stana Katic) and crew getting called in to investigate an axe murder -- literally -- on the set of a popular soap opera.

'AMC' star Rebecca Budig plays (you guessed it) a soap star, but her TV husband Cameron Mathison is behind the camera here, playing director, and guest star Corbin Bernsen is playing Budig's TV love interest instead.

I went to Hawaii and all I got was a farmer's tan. Well, that and some face time with the cast of ABC's freshman medical drama 'Off the Map.'

Zach Gilford Gets Goofy on 'Off the Map' Set (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Feb 16th 2011 11:00AM
Zach Gilford, 'Off the Map'The most nail-biting dramas often have the funniest sets. When long days are filled with take after take of someone dying on the operating table, downtime naturally becomes prank time.

So when I visited the 'Off the Map' set on a particularly busy day -- shooting a scene of the surgical aftermath of a hang-gliding accident, which you'll see at the end of the season -- I wasn't surprised to find the cast giggly, playful and ready to have fun between shots.

But who's the king of the jokes? The funniest when the cameras stop rolling? There's no doubt that man is 'Friday Night Lights' alum Zach Gilford. And as I learned in not one but three of my other cast interviews, he doesn't always wait for the cameras to stop before popping in with some goofball antics.

Check out this adorable behind-the-scenes look at the cast of 'Off the Map' (Wednesdays, 10PM ET on ABC) after the jump.

The 'Retired at 35' Cast Previews Their New Show (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jan 19th 2011 6:15PM
Retired at 35Once a place to catch reruns of your favorite classics, TV Land is now asserting itself as a network for original programming. They're following the first season success of 'Hot In Cleveland' with another sitcom shot in front of a studio audience, 'Retired at 35' (premieres Wed., Jan. 19, 10:30PM ET).

'Retired' follows David Robbins (Johnathan McClain), a young businessman who decides he'd much rather retire than work his way further up the corporate ladder. So he moves to Florida to crash with his dad (George Segal) and mom (Jessica Walter), in turn shaking things up for them as well.

I visited the set to hear all about the very esteemed cast, to bring the hilarious Segal up to speed on modern technology and the Internet ("Wait a second -- this whole thing is being conducted on a telephone?") and to hear why retiring at 35 isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Regis and Kelly's Halloween 2010 Show: On the Scene

by Chris Harnick, posted Oct 29th 2010 3:46PM
Kelly Ripa, Regis PhilbinNobody does Halloween on live TV like Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.

The dynamic duo of 'Live! With Regis & Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated) pulled out all the stops with this year's "'Live's' Reality Bites Again: Chomped From the Headlines' set of Halloween costumes.

The talk show hosts dressed as the stars of 'Jersey Shore,' 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians,' 'Modern Family,' 'The Rachel Zoe Project' and 'Glee,' as well as tabloid sensations Lady Gaga, Cher, Justin Bieber and Steven Slater.

Philbin also donned a furry red costume along with Ripa in a bright yellow dress to parody one of the most absurd controversies of the year: Katy Perry and Elmo on 'Sesame Street.' The stars closed the show as new 'American Idol' judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

AOL's TV Squad was there to capture all the Halloween fun. Check out our behind-the-scenes video and interview with Philbin and Ripa, plus a look at some of this year's costumes!

Behind the Scenes of 'Community's' Halloween Episode

by Laura Prudom, posted Oct 28th 2010 11:55AM
Joel McHaleGreendale Community College is a very special kind of educational establishment, catering to the drop-outs, the rejects, the elderly and even those who like to forge their qualifications.

It's also one of the most entertaining places to spend 30 minutes of your time on a Thursday evening, even up against such ratings heavy-hitters as CBS' 'The Big Bang Theory' and Fox's 'Bones'.

Perhaps you've never seen an episode of NBC's 'Community,' now in its second season (quite likely, since the show is criminally underrated), but if you only watch one Halloween episode this year, you should make it this one -- it's even on at a special time, 8.30PM ET, so you don't have to choose between those geniuses on CBS and the ... different type of geniuses that populate 'Community'.

Besides, this episode has zombies, and Ken Jeong in skintight Spandex; what more could you ask for from a TV show?

The 'Parenthood' Cast Talks Guest Stars, New Gigs & Going to Magic Mountain (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 19th 2010 8:30PM
The set of 'Parenthood' is like a carnival and a three-ring circus combined. The night I was there to chat with the cast, there was also a big crazy dinner celebration at the Braverman house -- you'll see what that's all about next week, although star Joy Bryant did tease "lots of surprises, new announcements." Hmmm ...

Between scenes, I caught up with stars Erika Christensen and Sam Jaeger to find out if Joel will finally get to bring home the bacon, or if Julia will continue to be the breadwinner. And star Monica Potter cast her dream TV parents for Kristina, which includes a very controversial choice to play her dad. Plus, Bryant and Dax Shepard tried to bribe their TV kid with a trip to Magic Mountain.

We also dished about a cute new guy for Haddie and the castmember that everyone wants to have more scenes with ... any guesses? Watch and see the glorious madness that is 'Parenthood.'

Aly Michalka and Robbie JonesIf 'Bring it On' is one of your favorite guilty pleasures, you get 'Fired Up' at the sight of pom-poms, or a cheerleading uniform is your default Halloween costume of choice, chances are you're already hooked on the CW's peppy freshman drama 'Hellcats,' a spirited (or should we say "spirit-fingered"?) look at the world of competitive college cheerleading.

If you're not already hooked, perhaps we can entice you to join the team with this perky preview. Two weeks ago, TV Squad was among a group of journalists invited to visit the set of the Vancouver-based show, and we returned with all sorts of intel on what's in store for our ridiculously attractive squad.

'Rubicon' Set Visit: Paranoia, Espionage and Milk

by Marina Zogbi, posted Jul 26th 2010 5:20PM
Jessica Collins, James Badge Dale, Arliss Howard in 'Rubicon'
How do you follow up two of the most acclaimed television series in cable history? If you're AMC, whose 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking Bad' have both pushed the boundaries of small screen drama, you veer off into another direction entirely.

'Rubicon,' which has its two-hour premiere on August 1 (a sneak preview followed 'Breaking Bad's' season finale last month and 'Mad Men's' premiere last night), may seem familiar to anyone who's enjoyed '70s-era paranoid conspiracy thrillers à la 'The Parallax View,' or 'The Conversation.' Yet the 13-episode series -- created by Jason Horwitch ('Medical Investigation,' 'The Pentagon Papers') and starring James Badge Dale ('The Pacific,' '24') -- reflects a moody, modern, post 9/11 sensibility and, not incidentally, continues AMC's tradition of slow-building, intricately detailed story-telling.

TV Squad recently visited 'Rubicon's' main New York City set. Read what we saw and learned, after the jump ...

'The Glades' Set Visit: Not Just Another Cop Drama

by Allison Waldman, posted Jul 9th 2010 2:00PM

In the fictional town of Palm Glade -- a town on the edge of the Florida Everglades within driving distance of the glitzy Gold Coast -- the heat is on. But it's not just car chases and glass towers overlooking azure waters; 'The Glades' is Florida in a more realistic and gritty style, with dead bodies surfacing to get Detective Jim Longworth off the golf course and deep into solving the whodunit.

This guy, played by Australian actor Matt Passmore ('Underbelly'), can best be described as a modern day, shaggy-haired, pain-in-the-ass, annoyingly overconfident Sherlock Holmes ... And did I mention he's hot?

On Sun., July 11, at 10PM ET, 'The Glades' premieres on A&E. For a behind the scenes look at the making of the show, as well as more on Matt and company, read on.

'Haven' Set Visit: There's More Than Meets the Eye in This Small Town

by Chris Jancelewicz, posted Jun 29th 2010 2:00PM

Let's go over all the elements one needs for a Stephen King book-to-TV adaptation. Sleepy, sorta-eerie east coast town? Check. A cast of characters whose secrets have yet to be uncovered? Check. A collection of strange occurrences that no one can really explain? You'd better believe it. SyFy/Canwest's offering, 'Haven', which is based on Stephen King novella 'The Colorado Kid', has all these elements and more.

TV Squad visited the set of 'Haven', which is filming this summer just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the towns of Chester and Lunenburg. These small, romantic-looking towns are playing the part of Haven, Maine, the central locale of the TV show. With harbors and inlets aplenty, Chester and Lunenberg are boating and sailing towns, which is a definite plus considering how big a role boats play in 'Haven'.
