No more procedurals for CBS

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 20th 2006 12:28PM
jerichoCBS executives are looking to diversify their primetime line-up, and with good reason. From the three CSI franchises, to Without a Trace and Cold Case, the network has an awful lot of procedural dramas. Luckily, the execs recognize that and they've given themselves (and everyone else) an order to get creative. Already, they're working on a 1970s drama about wife swapping and the sexual revolution, a show about the women's movement, and a comedy from one of the Borat writers. The weirdest thing they have lined up is an American version of the U.K. hit, Viva Blackpool. Variety describes it as "a musical thriller featuring characters belting out top 40 songs." This fall season saw some unusual shows for CBS, including Jericho and Smith (which was already canceled). Last year's attempt to be different was Love Monkey, which was also canceled. CBS entertainment prez Nina Tassler says the hard part has been getting studios to pitch their edgier stuff to the network, which has always had a bit of a stuffy reputation.

NBC and CBS bring in the replacements

by Brett Love, posted Oct 12th 2006 3:32PM
Stanley TucciWith Kidnapped shuffled to a new night to finish out its run, and Smith pulled from the schedule completely, NBC and CBS have a couple slots to fill. The Emmy-winning Medium will return to NBC for its third season sometime in mid November, taking over the Wednesday at 10PM slot. CBS will fill Tuesday at 10PM with 3 Lbs starting on November 14th.

3 Lbs is about the relationship between a brilliant, but arrogant, neurosurgeon, and the rising star that works for him. Originally it was to star Dylan McDermott, but now will feature Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, Murder One) and Mark Feuerstein (West Wing, Good Morning Miami). I'm not sure about Feuerstein in this role, we'll have to wait and see, but I'll give anything with Stanley Tucci in it a look. This character sounds like he could have a little Richard Cross in him, which would be a good thing.

EW's Dalton Ross doesn't like Studio 60

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 7th 2006 4:29PM

Studio 60Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross gives his list for the best and worst pilots he's seen, and he doesn't really like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In fact, he calls it "underwhelming," and he's amazed by the "awfulness" of Amanda Peet.

In other observations, he calls Twenty Good Years "excruciating," Ugly Betty "mindless fun," and The Nine "the best new show."

I don't know, I really liked Studio 60's pilot. Do I think it's at West Wing or Sports Night level yet? No, of course not, it's just a pilot. But it's very good, and with Sorkin behind it and the great cast, I have really high hopes for it.

Liotta and Scorsese reunite ... sorta

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 29th 2006 5:52PM
Ray Liotta of SmithRay Liotta is a fine actor, but most people still know him for his role as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's classic GoodFellas. So, the news that the premiere of his new CBS series, Smith will be completely sponsored by the new Scorsese movie The Departed, with little commercial interruption, makes for a bit of fun entertainment serendipity.

But this is more of a case of corporate synergy and a jam-packed show than the desire to semi-reunite Scorsese and Liotta. Both the movie and the series are owned by Warner Brothers, and the premiere clocks in at close to an hour, leaving little room for commercials. So either the episode had to be severely cut or air in an awkward 90-minute slot; this limited-interruption method helps everyone out. Too bad networks can't do this more often.

TV Squad previews CBS's new shows

by Joel Keller, posted Jun 29th 2006 1:45PM
CBS logoThe other day, Keith, Bob and I gave you a preview of NBC's new pilots, based on the screeners that have been coming into the TV Squad home office (which, in pure Lettermanian fashion, is located in Wahoo, Nebraska). Today, we tell you what CBS has in store for the 2006-07 season. They don't have too many new shows -- they're in first place, after all -- so this will be short and sweet. Remember, these are only "previews"; even though we'll give our impressions, many things about the show may change by the time the pilots air.

Here's what we'll be previewing: The Class, Smith, Jericho, and Shark (even the titles are short and sweet!).

Networks offer an online taste of the fall season

by Richard Keller, posted May 27th 2006 9:42AM

30 rock; internetAh, the Internet. With so much television content going over to the World Wide Web these days in the form of downloadable episodes or special features, it isn't surprising that the networks are offering previews of their new fall programming.

While FOX and The CW offer synopses of the new fall entries, CBS, ABC and NBC are offering video clips of all their new programming. Over at CBS, the previews of Jericho and James Woods' Shark look promising (although Jericho seems like Invasion) while Ray Liotta's heist drama Smith seemed to be Heist and Thief combined.

Old Christine, Close to Home get renewed

by Anna Johns, posted May 16th 2006 8:42AM
new adventures of old christine; julia louis-dreyfusCongratulations to Julia Louis-Dreyfus! CBS just signed on for a second season of The New Adventures of Old Christine. Maybe now everybody can stop talking about that 'Seinfeld curse' that she parodied on SNL last week. I watch the show and I think it has some funny moments, but it's not great like The Office or My Name is Earl or Scrubs. Doesn't even come close. Also renewed by CBS is Close to Home and renewal of The Unit is still up in the air. The network ordered 13 episodes of The King of Queens (that's still on?) because Kevin James is shooting a movie with Adam Sandler this year.

Also, CBS picked up five new dramas:
