Something Pitchy: Stevie Wonder, Hulk Hogan, a Haunted House and Casey Abrams Saved!

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 25th 2011 1:27PM
Oh, how far they fall! We all thought judges' fav, Casey Abrams would be skating by for at least a few more weeks but Nigel wasn't kidding when he tweeted up last night's shocking results show. After a flurry of fun surprises (The Hulkster! Stevie Wonder!) things got ultra-dramatic when Casey stood on the brink of elimination.

How did Casey end up on the outs? Is Stefano Langone's spotty driving record costing him votes? How does James Durbin get his face to do that? And is the 'Idol' mansion really haunted? Myself, Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) discuss all these pressing 'American Idol' issues in this edition of 'Something Pitchy!'

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Something Pitchy: 'We're Good' on Motown Night!

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 24th 2011 2:00PM
The kids put in some solid performances on Motown night, and thankfully J.Lo was taking notes, while Steven appeared to be asleep at the wheel. Myself, Rickey Yaneza and MJ Santilli share our thoughts on the new and improved "Lusky Stank Lite" and contemplate Naima Adedapo's chances of bringing African dance to the 'American Idol' tour. And, of course, more love for Paul McDonald from a certain member of the Something Pitchy crew!

Got a question or 'Idol' topic you'd like us to discuss on the show? Let us know in the comments or via Twitter (@somethingpitchy)

Something Pitchy: Stefano and Pia Prove That Italians Do It Better

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 17th 2011 4:30PM
Was it just a coincidence that last night's only 'American Idol' standouts were Pia Toscano and fellow Italian-American, Stefano Langone?

Probably, but we like to think the 'Idol' producers paired these two paisans to make a point: Italians do it better! Just ask Madonna.

Also on our minds after last night's lackluster Top 12 showing was the issue of Paul McDonald's increasingly annoying (depending on who you ask) stage presence and Randy Jackson's apparent favoritism when it comes to Jacob Lusk's "stank." All that and more in this post-Top12 performances edition of "Something Pitchy!"

Thanks as always to Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog)!

Something Pitchy: Is Anyone Really Trying to Win American Idol?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 11th 2011 2:15PM
After a tedious, promo-packed results show with an obvious elimination, we caught up with Vote For The Worst mastermind, Dave Della Terza to discuss who he and his VFTW army have their sights on - and why.

Which brought up a very interesting question regarding this season's somewhat eclectic group of guys. Who's really trying to win 'American Idol'? Casey Abrams' antics and Paul McDonald's old man swagger suggest neither is taking the competition all that seriously.

But with the full support of VFTW behind him, Paul may find his 'Idol' extended to the point where buying back his musical soul is no longer an option, thanks to his forced participation in endless Ford motor vehicles commercials and mainstream Hollywood flicks with "famous actresses or something."

Find out what Dave and myself have to say about Paul's rapidly decreasing indie cred and exactly why he's VFTW material in this post-results show edition of Something Pitchy!

Something Pitchy: Who the Heck is Charlie Chaplin?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 10th 2011 7:05PM
It takes a lot to become the next 'American Idol;' talent, determination, tenacity...But knowledge of the legendary performers who preceded you is, however, not required.

That's right, here on Something Pitchy, we're outraged (or at least, I am) that youngin' Thia Megia doesn't know who Charlie Chaplin is!

Will Thia's ignorance regarding major American cultural icons earn her a ticket home? Myself, Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) have some thoughts on just whose 'Idol' journey will come to an end this week, who's already overrated and of course, Naima Adedapo's Rihanna rap/reggae spectacle.

And a word of caution, you must love dogs to thoroughly enjoy this post-Top 13 performances edition of Something Pitchy!

Something Pitchy: Was Tim Halperin Robbed and Who the Heck Is Haley Reinhart?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 4th 2011 5:30PM
Well we've got our Top 13 and as far I'm concerned, there's a few glaring omissions, namely Tim Halperin and Lauren Turner.

Also missing from last night's results show? David Cook's boot song which was officially announced earlier in the day. Also, the mysterious, fan-selected ending to J.Lo's, ahem, highly anticipated new video. Granted, myself, Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) weren't paying much attention...

However, there were a few twists and turns in this first two-hour live show that did catch our attention, like America voting in the largely ignored Haley Reinhart and the judges passing out a wild card to Jovany Barreto and passing up Tim Halperin.

Your usual trio of 'Idol' obsessives weigh in on this and more in this post-finalists edition of "Something Pitchy!"

Something Pitchy: Is Thia Megia the New Michael Jackson?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 3rd 2011 3:15PM
Here on Something Pitchy, we like to pose the important 'American Idol' questions of the day. Last night, Randy Jackson was somehow able to close his eyes and hear Michael Jackson's voice coming out of 15-year-old Thia Megia. Not quite sure we heard the King of Pop in Megia's performance of Irene Cara's 'Out Here on My Own,' but I guess that's why they pay Randy the big bucks.

Another matter warranting deep contemplation? Is Pia Toscano the new Lauren Alaina? And is Lauren Alaina the new Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson?!

Pia brought down (or rather up, with a standing O) the house last night making the Georgia teen's excellent Reba McIntyre number feel like a distant memory by the closing credits. But will Pia's first blockbuster performance be enough to carry her through to the finals?

Find out what 'Idol' experts Rickey Yaneza, MJ Santilli and I have to say about the girls, plus our picks for the finals in this post-ladies-night edition of Something Pitchy!

'American Idol' returns with the Top 10 Results Show Thursday at 8PM ET on Fox.

Something Pitchy: Is Brett Loewenstern the New Sanjaya?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Mar 2nd 2011 5:00PM
That's right, we said it! After Tuesday night's performance, the red-headed, Boca Raton teen might just have a lock on the title of "Season 10's Sanjaya."

But what about newly minted metal head James Durbin and the second coming of Luther Vandross aka Jacob Lusk? Find out what I, Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) have to say about the Top 12 boys and their chances at becoming the next 'American Idol' in this edition of "Something Pitchy!"

Something Pitchy: Are 'American Idol's' Top 24 Really All That?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 25th 2011 6:30PM
After sitting through three hours of dramatic eliminations, we've finally got our elite Top 24. While some have proven themselves to be polished performers (Tim Halperin, Julie Zorrilla and Casey Abrams, to name a few), others indulge in musical theatrics a wee bit too much (we're looking at you, James Durbin and Jacob Lusk!).

Find out what myself, Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org) and MJ Santilli (MJs Big Blog) have to say about our 24 lucky boys and girls as we head into the live show next week on this "Green Mile" edition of 'Something Pitchy!'

Something Pitchy: Is 'The Vocal Coach From Hell' the New Simon?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 24th 2011 2:35PM
Week after week, I ask if we've found "the new Simon," but this time, I think we're on to something.

Find out what Rickey Yaneza (Rickey.org), MJ Santilli (MJsBigBlog) and myself think about the arrival of bootcamp vocal coach, Peggi Blu, this season. And we'll tell you which 'Idol' moment brought us to tears last night. Was it J.Lo's breakdown over Chris Medina or Ashley Sullivan's Britney Spears–inspired wedding? We'll do our best to keep it together as we take the long walk down 'American Idol''s "green mile"!

Something Pitchy 'Idol Show': Is Lauren Alaina Aerosmith's Biggest Fan?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 18th 2011 5:31PM
As Hollywood week comes to an end, we're treated to more breakout stars like Jacob Lusk, Ashthon Jones and Carson Higgins while early favorites like country boy Scott McCreery and the eccentric Ashley Sullivan struggle to hang on to their slots in the competition.

This time, we've got MJ of MJ's Big Blog in the (virtual) house to discuss Ashley, Scott, emerging 'Idol' villain, Clint Gamboa and Lauren Alaina's continued efforts to woo Steven Tyler. Just remember, Lauren, Steven's band is called '
"Aerosmith", not "Cheap Trick." Hey-ooo! Check out this edition of "Something Pitchy" for more 'Idol' wisecracks and wisdom.

Something Pitchy: Are Stage Moms the New Simon?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 17th 2011 4:00PM
Save the drama for your mama and take her with you to Hollywood while you're at it! The group round saw the emergence of a gaggle of stage moms, who successfully guided their 15- and 16-year olds ("The Minors") through to the next round.

Meanwhile, Jacee Badeaux and Tiffany Rios struggled to find acceptance in Tinsel Town, for very different reasons.

Find out what 'Idol' expert Rickey Yaneza and I have to say about Jacee's tears, Tiffany's attitude and the "mom factor" in the latest episode of 'Something Pitchy.'

Something Pitchy: The Hollywood Heartbreak Begins on 'American Idol'

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 11th 2011 5:39PM
'American Idol' has finally arrived in Hollywood, meaning the return of familiar faces like Chris Medina and Scott McCreery and the departure of a few as well, like North Carolina's Victoria Huggins.

There's a lot of ground to cover in this first Hollywood round, and Rickey and I do our best to touch on all the big stories of the night, including the tragic 'Idol' breakup of lovebirds (and J.Lo's favorite "'Idol' couple in 10 years") Nick Fink and Jacqueline Dunford; big talk from New Jersey J.Lo wannabe, Tiffany Rios; and the triumphant return of our early favorites, Stefano Langone, Lauren Alaina and Scott McCreey. Check it out on this first Hollywood edition of "Something Pitchy!"

Something Pitchy 'Idol' Show: L.A. Auditions Worst Episode of 'American Idol' Ever?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 4th 2011 2:30PM
Call us a tough crowd but myself and veteran 'Idol' commentator Rickey Yaneza found last night's Los Angeles auditions close to unwatchable.

Aside from a few promising candidates, namely Tim Halperin and Karen Rodriguez, the hour veered more towards the mentally disturbed than the musically gifted.

Check out what we have to say about the unstoppable Tynisha Roches' "in your face" approach to auditioning and Arkansas' Cooper Robinson's relentless assault on our eardrums -- and sanity.

We also weigh in on the MySpace factor and look ahead to San Francisco and, finally, Hollywood next week!

SomethingPitchy Broadcast: The DeWyze Choice?

by Andrew Scott, posted May 27th 2010 4:51PM
Lee DeWyzeIt was a long and grueling season, but SomethingPitchy made it all the way to the end to see paint salesman Lee DeWyze be crowned the next 'American Idol.'

Did Lee actually deserve to win? That's just one of many hot-button topics on the table in this final episode of the season. Also up for discussion: Simon's farewell, the return of Paula Abdul and whether season 9 really was 'Idol''s worst season ever.

Watch the video after the jump, then be sure to check back next week for a very special bonus episode of SomethingPitchy, with 'American Idol' runner-up David Archuleta.
