'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4, Episode 9 Recap

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 1st 2011 11:00PM
['Sons of Anarchy' - 'Kiss']

Oh, Jax. You stepped up and showed some very savvy leadership in this episode. Much of what was good about 'Kiss' stemmed from Charlie Hunnam's terrific performance and from the ways in which the episode showed that Clay isn't just reckless these days, he's also not a good leader for the club. Jax is clearly the right man for these troubled times.

But does Jax really think a sitdown with the Irish, the cartel and the club is just one of "a few details" he has to take care of, a simple errand to be disposed of quickly? Has he learned nothing from being involved in the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club since he was knee-high to a Harley?

Anyone else have a taste for chili? Anyone?

Didn't think so. Well, you can't say that this was a quiet episode of 'Sons of Anarchy,' though I'd argue that one of 'Family Recipe's' calmest scenes was also one of the most satisfying.

But first, let's address that Big Thing that happened...and also, the Big Thing that didn't happen.

'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4, Episode 7 Recap (VIDEO)

['Sons of Anarchy' - 'Fruit for the Crows']

FX sends out episodes of 'Sons of Anarchy' in advance, which makes life easier for those of us who write about the show on a weekly basis.

This week, the network sent out a DVD containing 'Fruit for the Crows' and next week's episode as well, and it took a generous helping of self-control not to watch the Oct. 25 episode as soon as the credits rolled on this week's outing. Even though I was dying to see what happened next, I wrote this review without knowing. It's killing me a little bit.

Charming News: 'Sons of Anarchy' Gets a Fifth Season from FX

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 17th 2011 2:55PM
FX has ordered a fifth season of 'Sons of Anarchy,' which is currently in the middle of its fourth season on the cable network.

The news comes as no surprise: According to FX, the show's fourth-season premiere was the most-watched program in the network's history, with 6.5 million viewers tuning in. The biker chronicle is the channel's biggest hit.

"Everyone at FX is very grateful to Kurt Sutter, his many writing, directing and producing collaborators and his masterful cast for making such a compelling and beautifully crafted show," FX president and general manager John Landgraf said in a statement.

'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4, Episode 6 Recap

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 12th 2011 10:00AM
['Sons of Anarchy' - 'With an X']

Wow, there was a lot going on in this episode. Early in 'With an X,' we had a porn star pulling a gun on some bikers' old ladies, and it only got crazier from there.

Ima didn't die in the episode, even though, toward the end of the episode, I half thought she might. Sadly, we did have to say goodbye to a member of the SAMCRO crew -- and not the one I was expecting.

You'd think, given how many mystery novels I read, I would have been wise to the misdirect ran through this episode, but I wasn't, and I'm fine with that.

Juice Must Think Fast to Save Himself on 'Sons of Anarchy' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 12th 2011 5:45AM
'Sons of Anarchy' - 'With an X'Juice was in a very tough spot with the Mayans and the Sons when we left things off last week. He stewed in it through most of this episode of 'Sons of Anarchy' (Tue., 10PM ET on FX), as both clubs started pointing fingers at who might have taken that kilo of cocaine.

Jax stood up for Juice immediately, and because of his long standing in the club, no one questioned his loyalty or possibly complicity in the theft. That left the newer recruits, who'd been on guard duty without even knowing what they were guarding.

['Sons of Anarchy' - 'Brick']

The secrets and lies just keep piling up in the Sons of Anarchy clubhouse. When will the show's web site give us a scorecard that'll help us keep track of who knows what and who has told which lies to which people?

Because we may just need a scorecard before this season is out.

'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4, Episode 4 Recap

['Sons of Anarchy' - 'Una Venta']

We hear the word "patch" a lot on 'Sons of Anarchy,' and it's interesting to think about how its various meanings are applicable to the current state of the club.

Of course, to wear the SAMCRO patch means that you're a fully vested member of the club. But there are deep divisions within the club, as well as differences of opinion and temporary alliances with various non-member too.

'Una Venta' did a good job of showing us how those problems have been patched over, but underneath that temporary fix, things are really starting to fester.

['Sons of Anarchy' - 'Dorylus']

This week is crazy-insane crunch time for the fall season, so this might be one of my shorter 'Sons of Anarchy' reviews.

Clearly, the most compelling part of the episode was the vote at the end. But there were some interesting moments amid the political wheeling and dealing that went on before the big gathering around the 'SOA' table.

'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4, Episode 2 Recap (VIDEO)

['Sons of Anarchy' -- 'Booster']

This episode provides textbook examples of what I think is working -- and wobbling -- this season on 'SOA.'

The long-term tensions, alliances, goals and conflicts that are being set up among various club members are gold, as far as I'm concerned. One thing I especially like about this episode is the variation on a theme we've seen explored in the past -- the idea that when Clay and Jax are allied, they're actually more dangerous to the club than when they're at each others' throats.

That's not to say that the alliance is smooth sailing all the way. Far from it. Jax felt blindsided by the deal that Clay had made with the cartel about transporting coke, and Clay couldn't believe that Jax would really and truly walk away from the club forever. Both men were forced, not willingly, to accept the situation as it is, and given their parallel goals -- to make money before leaving the club's leadership positions -- they had to grudgingly get over whatever problems they might have with each other's actions.

Talking TV Podcast Talks 'Louie' and 10 Returning Shows We're Excited About

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 8th 2011 2:15PM
With the onslaught of new shows around the corner, Ryan McGee and I decided to talk briefly about 10 returning programs we're quite interested in (we each picked five shows).

And of course, the word "brief" was in our podcast planning documents, but it didn't quite work out that way. Between our opening gabfest about the FX show 'Louie,' which concludes its second season tonight, and the discussions of the other 10 shows, the podcast ended up being about 90 minutes long.

The rundown of shows we discussed, which includes 'The Good Wife,' 'Supernatural,' 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Luther' and 'Glee,' is below.

'Sons of Anarchy' - 'Out'

I offered some general thoughts on the new season of 'Sons of Anarchy' in my review of the new season, but I'll throw out a few more observations in the episodic review below.

The club is out of prison and back in Charming, so everything's right with the world, huh? Yeah, not so much. What else did you expect?

Review: Back in Charming, 'Sons of Anarchy' Rolls Into Dark Territory (VIDEO)

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 6th 2011 10:30AM
It wouldn't be going too far to say that the season 4 premiere of 'Sons of Anarchy' (10PM ET Tuesday, FX) is like taking a bath in everything the show tends to do well.

If you prefer a food-based analogy, it's a buffet of things likely to please the show's longtime fans. The focus is firmly on the club's internal dynamics, there are interesting new characters on the scene in the club's home town of Charming, and there's even a gathering of bikers that ends up being both salty and sentimental.

The good news is, after the motorcycle club's trip to Belfast last season -- a diversion that, for many fans, didn't quite have the payoff they'd hoped for -- the show has returned to familiar stomping grounds and the kind of complicated relationship dynamics that had turned many viewers into die-hard fans in earlier seasons.

But not everything is smooth sailing. The broad strokes of the show's mythology and the club's new antagonists are bristling with potential, but some of the weekly adventures seem unnecessarily convoluted and/or convenient.
