In recent years, the songs nominated at the Oscars have not been particularly memorable or worth the time during the broadcast to waste on music that nobody remembers after walking out of the multiplex. This year, ironically, there is at least one very good song that was going to be an Oscar highlight, assuming the producers convinced Jeff Bridges to sing 'The Weary Kind' from 'Crazy Heart' during the March 7th broadcast. That's not going to happen now.

New Oscar producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic have decided to drop the Best Song performances, according Entertainment Weekly. Instead of singers -- either from the movie or good enough to sing the songs from the movies -- we're going to see a montage of images from the picture with the soundtrack recording.

Do you know what song I'm talking about? It's called Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission movie soundtrack. It's a very beautiful piece of music that was originally composed by Ennio Morricone, but none of the skaters have used the original version. I think I heard a version featuring Yo Yo Ma during the pairs skate. In any case, I think I've heard it more this week than I have heard NBC's Olympics theme song.

Think I'm exaggerating? American Matt Savoie used it for his free skate. American pairs skaters Marcy Hinzmann and Aaron Parchem skated to it in their short program. And, Italian Carolina Kostner used it for her short program last night.

None of these skaters performed very well so I think it's fair to say, while beautiful, the song may be cursed.
