I tried to resist you Squidbillies, but you sucked me in

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2009 8:00PM
SquidbilliesBlame the influence of friends; I do. Because we couldn't get the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie to play right, we ended up jumping into Volume 2 of Squidbillies. Now I'd seen part of one episode of this (where Rusty makes his deal with the devil), but I changed the channel. I'm not sure why I resisted the Cuylers. I love ATHF, so you'd think it would be right up my alley, considering it's by one of ATHF's creators. Hell, it even features the voice of Master Shake as Granny.

Even when we first started watching it last night, with Season 3, Episode 1 I was reluctant to say I was enjoying it. Eleven episodes later and I was laughing out loud when Granny was transformed with road kill skin grafts and an udderly disgusting boob job. It's a tradition in our house to look at one another at the end of each episode of ATHF and say "what the f**k did we just watch?!" Squidbillies gives me that same feeling of ridiculous. Not to mention the characters remind me of some of the people who live in the small Midwest town I find myself now.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 20th 2009 7:06PM
CapricaHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I'd like to apologize to the makers of My Own Worst Enemy. I enjoyed the show to a certain extent, but I have no intention of buying the complete series set (complete series meaning one season). It's one of those shows that I kinda enjoyed each week, yet at the same time I'm not going to miss it, and I can't imagine grabbing the DVDs off of my shelf and watching the episodes again.

There's actually nothing I want to buy this week, so my wallet/bank account will be happy.

  • Battlestar Galactica - Caprica
  • Dallas - Season 11
  • Freakazoid - Season 2
  • iCarly - Season 1, Vol. 2

Animation news: Powerpuff Girls DVD review, a toon quiz and Wayside heads to Nickelodeon

by Adam Finley, posted Jun 9th 2007 1:02PM

powerpuff girlsThe first season of The Powerpuff Girls comes out on DVD June 19. The series, created by Craig McCracken (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), debuted on the Cartoon Network in the late '90s, first as occasional shorts on such showcases as What A Cartoon and then later developing into an actual series.

On the surface, Powerpuff Girls appeared to be little more than a cute action cartoon for the Hello Kitty set, but McCracken has a knack for throwing in plenty of pop culture references for the adults, and, frankly, it's just cool to see a cartoon starring three tough little girls who aren't damsels in distress. The basic shapes and vibrant colors mixed with the simple lessons learned in each episode, then combined with action sequences borrowed heavily from Japanese animation, resulted in a series that resembled a preschool show taken over by caffeine-addled weirdos, which is the highest compliment I can think of.
