Cram a media center PC into an old school sterero

The thing about computer parts is you can put them in pretty much anything these days. Well, if you know what you're doing. Otherwise you're liable to fry a few circuit boards here and there.

But one industrious hardware hacker decided that he liked the look of his old school stereo system enough to keep it around, even though he had a plans to use slightly more high tech components in his media center setup. So he crammed an Athlon XP 2500+ processor, 2 250 GB hard drives, 1GB of RAM, a DVD burner, and a dual tuner TV card in there. Oh yeah, and to top it off he fit a BenQ 15-inch monitor and some USB ports in the top.

The whole thing powers a video projector and a set of bookshelf speakers. The analog clock display on the front of the unit shows the current time, songs playing, and weather conditions.

Video killed the radio star

by Anna Johns, posted Jun 30th 2006 9:37AM
natasha bedingfieldHas the video ever totally ruined a song for you? It sure has for me. I realized it this afternoon as I quickly slammed the radio button in my car to turn off a song that I hate... all because of the video. The song is called 'These Words (I Love You, I Love You)' by Natasha Bedingfield. I used to see her 'Bimbo Jones remix' video early every morning last winter when I worked out at the gym. It was like a train wreck: it was awful but I couldn't look away. She sang and danced her happy tune with little cartoon stereos that had chubby legs. Weird. And super dumb. I'm not sure whether I would've liked the song anyway, but the video made me hate it. I've embedded it after the jump so you can hate it too.

What video ruined a song for you?

Count your remotes

by Adam Finley, posted May 6th 2006 9:22AM

remotesI'd like to think I'm not terribly old, but I do actually remember a time when televisions didn't have remote controls. In fact, my siblings and I were my father's remote control. The advent of the "clicker" changed the way we watch TV, and ultimately, the way television shows and commercials are made and produced. Back in the day, you would pick a channel and more or less stay with that channel for the evening. Now, you can zap through the channels, defying each one to engage you within three seconds or risk being left in the dust. Borrowing (stealing) an idea from Lost Remote, I thought I'd ask TV Squad readers just how many remotes they have in their home. I'll stretch it to include any kind of remote, not just television ones. I myself rock three remotes: one for my crappy little stereo, one for my Tivo (that also changes the channels on my TV), and another one to turn my TV on and control the volume. Why can't the Tivo remote also turn my TV on and control the volume? Well, it's because instead of buying a name brand TV that's compatible with universal remotes, I instead chose to purchase some no-name brand which I believe was put together by Eskimos using discarded pieces from a Zenith set circa 1968. I'm not always as discerning a consumer as I should be.
