Will J.Lo Be the New Simon Cowell? More About the 'American Idol' Judges Shake-Up

by Sharon Knolle, posted Sep 22nd 2010 6:45PM
Now that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have been officially confirmed as 'American Idol' judges for season 10, what other shakeups can we expect?

Try, no more guest judges or mentors. And no more forcing everyone to sing disco.

Here's the top tidbits TV Squad learned at this morning's press conference.

Who's the new Simon Cowell?
"We're not looking to replace Simon," insisted Fox executive Mike Darnell. 'Idol' producer Nigel Lythgoe added, "It isn't about role playing. It's about being yourself. That was Simon's character and [the new judges] are going to stay true to their characters."

Is Steven Tyler the Key to Making 'American Idol' Good Again? Dream On ...

by Kim Potts, posted Aug 20th 2010 1:30PM
Steven TylerJ.Lo's out, Ellen's out, Kara DioGuardi is probably out, Randy is probably in and, according to media reports, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler is in as a judge for 'American Idol,' season 10.

Nothing's official yet, mind you, except that we know original judge Simon Cowell is gone, which had led to this frantic, and buzz-killing, search for a new judge (judges?) for the one-time ratings juggernaut that lost nearly 10 percent of its audience last season.

After months of rumored judge candidates -- Chris Isaak! Harry Connick Jr.! Justin Timberlake! Betty White! (OK, that one was wishful thinking, but we'll take Betty on anything) -- Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton, said during an interview with The Newark Star-Ledger that his bandmate had signed a contract with 'American Idol.'

So, all should be right in the land of 'Idol,' and viewers should expect a rejuvenated show come next January, right?

Steven Tyler Officially Signed On to 'American Idol?'

by Chris Jordan, posted Aug 18th 2010 1:05PM
It sounds like dude's an 'American Idol' judge.

The Hollywood Reporter says two sources close to the talks confirm that Steven Tyler, the lead singer for the rock band Aerosmith, has signed a deal to be a judge on the upcoming season of 'American Idol.'

Tyler himself confirmed earlier in the month that he was in discussions to land the job.

Tyler and Randy Jackson are so far the only two judges on the panel, if the report is correct. Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi will not be judges for the upcoming season, for which contestant tryouts have already begun around the country. Jennifer Lopez has been a much-discussed name for the third chair, as has Shania Twain. The report suggests that Lopez's asking price, more than $20 million for the season, caused 'AI' producers to balk and move on to Twain, who was a mentor during the past season.

No 'American Idol' Deals In Place Yet, Say Fox Execs - TCA Report

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 2nd 2010 3:13PM
Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly at the FOX executive session at the Summer 2010 TCAsThe highly-anticipated FOX executive session got underway with a bit of non-news, with the network's entertainment chairman, Peter Rice, saying that "No one has signed a deal yet on either side of the camera to join 'American Idol' that wasn't there last year."

This means that there's no deal for Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler to be judges, no deal for Nigel Lythgoe to return as executive producer. Rice and FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly both deflected questions from the gathered critics about the 'Idol' judging panel, including the status of Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson. Rice would not get into speculating about the judges because "it's not fair to those being speculated about."

All he would really say is that some of the speculation around who the new names are going to be is close to true, and a lot of it is wildly false. One thing Reilly did say in the reporter's scrum after the panel is that the goal is to announce all the changes at once. Whether they'll be able to do that or not is obviously going to be determined on when they get the deals done.

More on the FOX exec panel after the jump...

'American Idol' Rumors: Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler to Replace Ellen DeGeneres?

by Gary Susman, posted Jul 30th 2010 11:10AM
Jennifer LopezEllen DeGeneres' abrupt resignation from 'American Idol' yesterday looks like only the beginning of a period of upheaval at the judges' table. By the time the dust settles, Kara DioGuardi may be gone as well -- and those three vacancies (the third coming from Simon Cowell's long-planned departure) may be filled by only two judges. And one of them will almost certainly be Jennifer Lopez.

Confused? Here's a roundup of all the 'Idol' news that's broken over the last half-day or so since Ellen DeGeneres' announcement.
