Best '70s TV Shows

by Kim Potts, posted Jun 22nd 2009 6:00AM
MASHIn AOL TV's continuing countdown of the best TV shows of each decade, we're back to break down the 1970s, a decade when the cop dramas were less gritty, the families were close-knit and the sitcoms were sprinkled with serious social commentary.

Our list of the best shows of the '70s features many of the best shows of all time (here's looking at you, 'Mary Tyler Moore Show,' 'M*A*S*H' and 'Taxi'). Take a gander and let us know if you agree.

New TV on DVD releases this week

I Dream of JeannieHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Wow, this is quite a week for TV fans of all types. You can get the complete series sets for The Sopranos and I Dream of Jeannie, and anniversary sets for such TV classics as The Cosby Show and The Long Ranger. I even see a season 2 set for Mister Peepers! I didn't even know there was a season 1 set already released, so I'll have to look into that.

The Studio One anthology is a real gem, and I'll have a review of it later this week.

  • 7th Heaven - Season 7
  • Band of Brothers - Miniseries (Blu-Ray)
  • Chuck - Season 1 (Blu-Ray)
  • The Cosby Show - 25th Anniversary
  • Father Knows Best - Season 2
  • Firefly - Complete Series (Blu-Ray)
  • I Dream of Jeannie - Complete Series
  • Little House on the Prairie - Complete Series

CBS to remake Streets of San Francisco (oh please don't ruin it)

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 30th 2008 11:04AM
Streets of San FranciscoThere was a time I was completely obsessed with The Streets of San Francisco. I never really watched it when it was on ABC in prime time, except for an episode here and there, but I used to watch it every day in the afternoon after school when a local station aired repeats. It was one of the highlights of the day for a while. It's one of those solid 70s shows with a good cast and some interesting guest stars (Arnold Schwarzenegger as a weight lifter who kills people when they make fun of his size!).

CBS is going to remake the show, and I can only imagine it's going to be CSI: San Francisco. The beauty of these old shows was the cast, so I don't know what you get by just taking the title and putting new actors in there. Hopefully they'll keep the old theme song, and resist the urge to add rap lyrics to it.

Several DVD sets change release dates

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 31st 2007 2:59PM

Twin PeaksOK, so you're one of the people who is waiting for the first season sets of The Streets of San Francisco and/or The Untouchables to be released. But now comes word that both Paramount sets have been delayed a week.

The Untouchables set will now be released on April 10, a week later than originally announced, while the Streets of San Francisco set will also be released on April 10.

But there's one piece of good news, for fans of Twin Peaks: the second season will actually be released a week earlier than previously announced, on April 3. That's a Paramount title too. Maybe they wanted to get this one out a week earlier than the other two releases for some reason.
