CBS rules Monday night

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 23rd 2007 4:15PM

Two and a Half MenSo last night was the first really big Monday night of the new year, with the return of Heroes and Studio 60. And how did those shows fare?

Typical numbers for Studio 60 at 10pm, with around 7.4 million viewers. It was crushed by CSI: Miami, which got 18.7 million viewers. But the big news of the night (well big-ish, I guess) is that Two and a Half Men beat Heroes fairly easily. The Charlie Sheen show got 16.1 viewers, with Heroes getting 14.8 (24 was close, with 14.4). And yes, for you 18 to 49 demographic fans, Heroes won in that race.

That number for CSI: Miami is what I keep thinking about though. My God, almost 19 million for that show? I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan of Studio 60, I'd still say it if it was on Tuesdays at 8 or Saturdays at 9. It just depresses me that this show (and all the CSIs, actually) do that well in the ratings. It must make the network execs scream "hey, we should do more of those shows!"

My dream Nielsen ratings list

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 19th 2007 12:06PM

Studio 60Every week it's the same damn thing: the top 20 network shows always include a few CSIs, a couple of Law and Orders, and a bunch of reality shows and game shows. Why doesn't the Nielsen list reflect what I watch every week? Why do people complain about the Nielsens when the numbers say that, well, somebody is watching those shows every single week.

Sure, it's great to see a show like Heroes or Lost or Old Christine or even ER crack the top 20 on some weeks, but most weeks the list is a mystery to me. In my mind, this is my dream Top 10 for any given week. (I could try to name 20 but I think after 10 I probably couldn't think of any shows and that would depress me.)

Tiffani Thiessen joins What About Brian

by Brett Love, posted Jan 5th 2007 11:31AM
Tiffani ThiessenIn what looks to me to be a desperate attempt to gain viewers any way they can, What About Brian is adding Tiffani Thiessen (Saved By The Bell, 90210, Fastlane) to their cast. She will play Natasha Dylan, who is described as being sexy, manipulative, and a shrewd business woman. Natasha will join the show as Dave's new boss at KC Gaming.

I don't know if adding Thiessen is the best of decisions, but then, it really can't hurt. What About Brian is struggling to keep its head above water at this point. The last original episode finished last in the time slot with only 4.54 million viewers, and that was up against repeats of Studio 60 and CSI: Miami. To put that in perspective, the last episode of Six Degrees that aired before it was pulled had 7.59 million. And the last episode of Smith was good for 8.43 million. Total viewers isn't the be all end all of keeping a show on the air, but someone needs to ask, "What about those ratings, Brian?"

Best and Worst of 2006: Keith's list

by Keith McDuffee, posted Dec 31st 2006 10:20AM
DexterThe Best:

Dexter -- Hands down the best new show of the year. Hell, this was the best show of the year, standing up against new and old. If you have Showtime, find it on repeats and catch up before the 2nd season comes next year. If you don't have Showtime, grab the DVDs next year. But for God's sake don't miss out on this show.

Battlestar Galactica -- What can I say that I haven't already said? I had this on my list last year, and here it is again. Guilty as charged. This show still keeps things happening and is one of the most talked about shows on the 'net, and for good reason.

Nielsen's Top Time-Shifted Shows

by Brett Love, posted Dec 21st 2006 4:21PM
HeroesLost Remote has a bunch of year end lists from the folks at Nielsen covering TV, movies, music, and books. The one I found really interesting is the top time-shifted shows of the year. It seems that this is really not a list that you would want to show up on. NBC places Studio 60 (#1), Friday Night Lights (#5), 30 Rock (#5), and Kidnapped (#9), all of which are having well publicized struggles with ratings.

ABC's lone entry on the list is The Nine (#7), and we all know how that turned out. Surprisingly, the CW ties NBC as the most time-shifted network with Gilmore Girls (#3), Next Top Model (#4), Supernatural (#7), One Tree Hill (#9), and Smallville (#9) making the list. The only top time-shifted show that has been able to translate that into ratings success is Heroes (#2).

If nothing else, I think this adds to the case that the current ratings system is broken. For so many low rated shows to show up on this list, something is getting lost in the numbers.

The Five: What Bob is thankful for

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 20th 2006 4:29PM

Studio 60So here we are at the start of Thanksgiving week, that time of year that we give thanks to everything we have in our lives. While most of us will, of course, be thankful for having our family and friends in our lives, we also can't forget about television!

1. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip getting a full season. Come on, you read this site, so you know this would be number one for me. I think it's a really good show, no matter what some people say. And kudos to NBC for actually giving the show (and Friday Night Lights, too) a full season even though the ratings weren't spectacular. Imagine, a network that didn't cancel a show quickly, instead having a strategy to move it to a new night! Who knows if the show will get a second season, it at least gets a whole first season, and that makes me happy.

The Five: Time slot changes I'd make

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 18th 2006 10:40AM

Studio 60Well, the new TV season has been going strong for over a month now, and it's already kinda clear how things are going to shake out, which shows are doing well and which shows are doing poorly. But the network execs shouldn't give up on shows just because they're doing badly or not as well as they hoped. With a little reconfiguration you can fix anything:

1. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC): I would move this from Mondays at 10 to Thursdays at 10. Heroes isn't the best lead-in for Sorkin's show, even if it is getting good ratings. Thursdays at 10 isn't ideal either, but with so many sitcoms, reality shows, and Deal Or No Deal taking up the 8 to 9 slots, it's hard to find a place for a new one-hour drama. Move ER to Mondays at 10. Not a great fit with Heroes either, but it has more of a fan base that will probably follow it anywhere. (NBC, if you got rid of one, just one, DOND, you'd have more options, but I understand it's a hit.)

Was it me, or did Studio 60's "cold open" kinda suck?

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 26th 2006 9:58AM
Matthew Perry and Bradley WhitfordCan someone tell Aaron Sorkin that he's not a sketch writer? Because if he's going to do a series about a sketch show being rescued from the dead he might want to make the sketches that show puts on... you know... what word am I looking for? Oh yeah! "Good."

Don't get me wrong, I really liked last night's episode of Studio 60; Sorkin needs to lay off the sanctimony, but that can be said of all his shows. However, the sketch that he wrote for the "cold open," the one that the entire episode led up to, was pretty lame.

Rejoice, rejoice,

the new season's here!

So warm your remotes,

and sit on your rears.

Its been a long summer

with nothing to watch

so we just sat around

scratching our . . . sunburn we got at the beach.

Bob's Fall TV Schedule

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 15th 2006 8:18AM

Smith

So many new shows to watch, so many old shows to keep watching. But one - even someone who writes about TV for a living - has to draw the line somewhere. So, right off the bat, I've decided to no longer watch Survivor, American Idol and ER. And I won't miss them.

Here's what I will be watching this season, and what I'll TiVo:

Sunday: 60 Minutes at 7pm, then The Simpsons at 8, then I'll watch Family Guy at 9.

Monday: I'll give The Class a shot at 8, then Heroes at 9, followed by Studio 60 at 10.

Annie's Fall TV Schedule

by Annie Wu, posted Sep 14th 2006 10:11AM
The Venture Bros.So busy. All the time. So much to do. Little room in schedule for TV. Not even funny. Too busy to even write full sentences. Alright, really, I don't have much time for TV. Between school and homework and trying to beat the daily crowd of starving students to the cafeteria so that I actually have some sort of substance lining my stomach everyday, I have no choice but to neglect my television. My days are rather unpredictable and hectic, but I'm usually free by 10. Usually. I always make time for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, because Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are my main men (and because I kind of need to watch The Daily Show... seeing as how that's my job and all), and Project Runway (it's the art school student's idea of watercooler talk fodder), but other than that, I don't religiously follow any other running show. There are some programs that I enjoy watching and try to catch as often as I can, but I don't really bother to tape them.

Yeah. I said "tape". I'm such a cutting-edge youngster, with a TV/VCR combo set. Wanna see my Sega Genesis?

Mike C.'s Fall TV Schedule

Gilmore GirlsI guess I could just devote my evenings to MyNetworkTV's telenovas but that would be too easy. From the NFL, to New Caprica, Star's Hollow, the Sunset strip, Rockefeller Plaza, and west Baltimore, here's where I expect to park my butt this fall season:

Sunday

5:15 pm (West Coast) Sunday Night Football (NBC). John Madden.

10 pm The Wire (HBO). The best ... blah blah blah, etc. (Actually, I'll most likely catch these earlier in the week On Demand.)

Rich's Fall TV Schedule

by Richard Keller, posted Sep 12th 2006 7:14PM

Studio 60Believe it or not, I don't watch much TV. With two daughters, five- and three-years-old respectively, and a set of five-month-old fraternal twins (boy and girl), there really isn't much time in the schedule to sit down and watch a show on a regular basis. Heck, by the time I turn on the television some evenings it's to watch Futurama and Family Guy on Adult Swim. So, the shows I do choose are ones that I know I'll watch on the regular basis because I'm reviewing them for TV Squad, or because I've already committed years of time on them already. With that in mind, here is the breakdown of what I'll be watching this fall.

Sunday: With Sunday Night Football dominating the NBC schedule for the first half of the television season, and the fact I do not watch football (yes, I'm un-American. So deport me!), I won't be watching much this day. I will probably get back into The Simpsons and Family Guy (and King of the Hill when it returns) this year since The West Wing is no longer with us.
