Lady Gaga and Sugarland Duet on 'Grammy Nominations Concert Live' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 1st 2011 2:30AM
Lady Gaga, 'Grammy Nominations Concert Live'Why just announce the nominees when you can do it with a concert instead? That's exactly what the 'Grammy Nominations Concert Live' (Wed., 10PM ET on CBS) did. And while it didn't go off perfectly, we did get to see at least one surprise that got the on-hand crowd on their feet.

After opening the show with her new hit 'Marry the Night,' Lady Gaga returned to perform an unexpected duet with Sugarland. Their voices went together beautifully on 'You and I.' We love that country continues to collaborate with other musical genres, as when Jason Aldean paired with Ludacris on 'Dirt Road Anthem.'

Kathy Griffin Calls Bristol Palin Fat, Is Booed by a Crowd of U.S. Soldiers (VIDEO)

Kathy Griffin Calls Bristol Palin Fat, Is Booed by a Crowd of U.S. Soldiers"Let's talk about 'Dancing With the Stars'!" comedienne Kathy Griffin yelled to the crowd. Oh, can we? What shall we discuss? How Carrie Ann Inaba is of mixed Japanese, Chinese and Irish ancestry? Do we want to talk about Derek Hough's record third win on the show? Should we gab about Florence Henderson's 'Brady Bunch'-themed tango? Or are we ... going to end up talking about Bristol Palin again?

"We got two words," Griffin continued. "BRISTOL ... PALIN." Ah. We see. Kathy was performing in front of a huge crowd of soldiers for 'VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops.' (Sun., 9PM ET on VH1). But as soon as she mentioned the dreaded words "Bristol Palin," the boos started rolling in from the troops. Wait. What are we booing again? Bristol? Kathy's sailor outfit? ... Kathy's comedy routine?

It turned out that the troops were jeering Ms. Griffin's routine. "You're gonna like this," she continued gamely. "[Bristol is] the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. ... She gained like 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic -- she's like the white 'Precious.'"

Chelsea Handler on "Sexually Offending" a Band Member (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 28th 2010 2:00AM
Chelsea Handler on 'Sexually Offending' a Band MemberThe band Sugarland currently has the number one album in America. How do you celebrate such a thing? Why, you appear on 'Chelsea Lately,' of course! But Sugarland has two members -- and one of the bandmates was conspicuously absent tonight (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!).

Singer Jennifer Nettles talked to Chelsea Handler about the album. But co-singer Kristian Bush wasn't there ... Hmm. Now why could that be?

To help you out a bit -- though the name "Kristian" is ambiguous, Mr. Bush is a guy. And he ran afoul of Ms. Handler during his previous appearance on the show. In fact, Handler apologized to Jennifer about it: "I probably offended him sexually, last time he was here." Whoops.

Could Sugarland: Live on the Inside usher in a new era of TV concerts?

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 5th 2009 11:31AM
Sugarland: Live on the InsideHas it really been four months since a broadcast network aired a televised concert? Sure, there was a Barbra Streisand special earlier this year, but that was from a 2006 concert, and Streisand isn't exactly a "current" or "hip" musical act. (Although she did top the charts when it was released on DVD.) Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Last night brought us Sugarland: Live on the Inside at ABC. This Sugarland concert was pulled from their current tour and featured their top country hits of today. It was a regular concert filmed for television, and I think it turned out really well.

With networks continuously scrambling to look for fresh alternatives to their traditional programming model amidst eroding ratings, I'm hoping somebody was watching ABC the other night. Concert tickets are expensive, and there are still millions of Americans who don't live near enough a big city to consider going even if they could afford it.
