'Supernatural' Farewell: Thoughts on 'Death's Door,' the Road So Far and Where I Stop Off

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 6th 2011 10:00AM
['Supernatural' - 'Death's Door']

Hello 'Supernatural' fans! Long time no see.

There's obviously been some recent news about Castiel's upcoming return (and you can read Misha Collins' reaction to that here), but today's piece was in the works before that development came to light. I wanted to offer a few thoughts on the Dec. 2 episode of the CW show, which was a terrific showcase for Jim Beaver, among other things. I bet I'm not alone in thinking it was one of the best Bobby-oriented episodes the show has ever done or in thinking it's among the best 'Supernatural' outings of 2011.

It feels good to be going out on a high. Me, that is. Not the show. This will be my last weekly review of 'Supernatural.' But this is not a farewell to the fandom -- merely an au revoir.

EXCLUSIVE: Misha Collins on Castiel's 'Supernatural' Return

by Laura Prudom, posted Dec 5th 2011 11:35PM
Misha CollinsOn Monday afternoon, 'Supernatural' fans finally received word that many had been waiting for with bated breath: Misha Collins is set to return to the cult series for episode 717 and at least two more when the show comes back from winter hiatus.

The news was met with such enthusiasm that Collins' name became a worldwide Twitter trending topic soon after his guest spot was announced.

Reps for the show informed us that they couldn't give specific details about Collins' return or which other episodes the actor would be appearing in, so AOL TV went straight to the source. Though Collins admitted that he couldn't reveal much, he would offer one tantalizing hint about what fans can expect when he makes his much-anticipated return ...

Castiel Returns to 'Supernatural': Your Angelic Prayers Were Heard

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 5th 2011 6:45PM
'Supernatural' fans, Castiel is coming back to the show for at least three episodes in 2012.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros., which makes the CW show, said that Misha Collins, who plays the fan-favorite character Castiel, will return in the current season's episode 17. Depending on how many breaks the show takes before it airs the seventeenth episode of season 7, Castiel could be back on our screens by February or March.

Castiel will also appear in two subsequent episodes, but the spokesperson did not say which episodes those would be.

'Supernatural,' Season 7, Episode 7 Recap

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 5th 2011 5:15PM
['Supernatural' - 'The Mentalists']

I'm not sure whether 'The Mentalists' will provoke the same furor that 'The Girl Next Door' did a few weeks ago, but this week's episode dwelled on a lot of the same story elements, so I'm betting it'll stir up a few of those hornet's nests again.

In any event, some of the same writing issues that affected 'Girl' were on display here, and those problems have made the season as a whole frustrating and inconsistent. I don't know about you, but the mid-episode confrontation between Sam and Dean in 'The Mentalists' made me almost as angry as the what Dean did at the end of 'The Girl Next Door.'

Man, I'm really tired of this show making me dislike Dean.

'Supernatural' Season 7, Episode 6 Recap

['Supernatural' - 'Slash Fiction']

It's been a tempestuous few weeks for 'Supernatural' fans. Well, all right -- for this fan. I can't speak for everyone who watches the show, but I certainly felt many disturbances in the Force as season 7 got underway. It's been a bumpy ride, to say the least, and for me, it led to the writing of last week's 'Tough Love' laundry list of things I think the show needs to fix, address or otherwise improve.

So it comes as a relief to say that I liked 'Slash Fiction' quite a bit, and though it remains to be seen whether the show can fix all of its long-term and big-picture problems, this week's episode was double the fun of anything we've seen in the past month.

EXCLUSIVE 'Supernatural' Sneak Peek: It's Double Trouble For the Winchesters (VIDEO)

by Laura Prudom, posted Oct 26th 2011 3:50PM
Sam and Dean WinchesterWhere's an enchanted rabbit's foot when you need one? Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) are having a seriously long streak of bad luck ... we'd estimate about six and a half seasons' worth.

If this exclusive sneak peek at the promo for this week's 'Supernatural' is any indication, things are going to get way worse before they get better.

In 'Slash Fiction' (Friday, 9PM ET on The CW), our heroes find themselves on the run and forced off the grid after two Leviathans clone them and embark on a 'Pulp Fiction'-esque killing spree using their very attractive faces. Ordinarily, we'd be on board with twice the Winchester goodness, but in this case, we like our men a little less homicidal.

Hit the jump for our sneak peek at this week's extended promo clip, then check out our interview with executive producer Sera Gamble for a look at what else is coming up this season.

Tough Love for 'Supernatural' (Plus a Few Thoughts on the Show's 'Buffy' Reunion)

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 22nd 2011 5:00PM
Each week, I post a 'Supernatural' review that generally focuses on the hour that just aired, and occasionally I delve into big-picture matters. This time, I'm going to flip that ratio. Most of this post will be devoted to a "state of 'Supernatural'" essay.

Below, I offer a few thoughts on the appearances of 'Buffy' veterans James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter in 'Shut Up, Dr. Phil,' Friday's outing. But I spent that night hanging out and talking about the show with Alice Jester of the Winchester Family Business and academics and 'Supernatural' chroniclers Lynn Zubernis and Kathy Larsen, all of whom are among my favorite 'Supernatural' writers. Though we didn't always agree on everything, we were all of the opinion that there are number of things that aren't working or could be working better on the show these days.

Why is the word "love" in the title? Because we've been devoted to the show for a long time and we know how very good it can be. We're still fans, but, as is the case with a number of readers, our patience has been tested by various aspects of seasons 6 and 7. Hence the tough advice (and you're welcome to offer your own in comments, as long as you keep things civil.)

'Supernatural' EP Sera Gamble Talks Dean's Drinking Problem, Sam's Worst Nightmare & the Midseason Cliffhanger

by Laura Prudom, posted Oct 21st 2011 2:15PM
Dean and SamWe're only five weeks into Season 7 of 'Supernatural,' and already, we've seen (alleged) character deaths, lies, explosions, a broken leg and a couple of seriously creepy visitations from Lucifer -- and the show seems to have no intention of slowing down any time soon. Tonight's episode (9PM ET, The CW) even boasts 'Buffy' alums Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters as a quarreling couple at the center of a suburban bloodbath.

But with so many unexpected twists, questions are sure to follow. Yesterday, I caught up with executive producer Sera Gamble to get some insight into Dean's current mental state (and Sam's, for that matter), the Leviathans' nefarious scheme to draw the Winchesters into the open and a potential return for a fan-favorite character (but not the one you're thinking of).

Spoilers ahead.

'Supernatural' Season 7, Episode 4 Recap

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 17th 2011 11:15AM
['Supernatural' - 'Defending Your Life']

You might say that things got lively in the comment area of of last week's 'Supernatural' review. More than 200 comments have been left on that post, and while I don't expect that many to flow in for 'Defending Your Life,' as always, I welcome your thoughts on this episode and on the state of the show in general.

Obviously I had big problems with 'The Girl Next Door,' and though it wasn't in the jaw-dropping realm, I found 'Defending Your Life' pretty frustrating as well.

Part of me had half-hoped it would make the missteps of 'The Girl Next Door' worth it, or at least less galling, but, all things considered, the execution of 'Defending Your Life's' central premise drained much of its potential away.

['Supernatural' - 'The Girl Next Door']

'The Girl Next Door' left me gobsmacked, but for all the wrong reasons.

I'm going to spend most of this review writing about one scene that came late in the episode. It neatly encapsulated a lot of what was wrong with not just this episode, but many other things as well.

If you're looking for a lot of commentary on Jensen Ackles' competent directing or details like the Biggerson's sign and things like that, you're not going to get it this time around.

'Supernatural' Season Premiere Recap

['Supernatural' - 'Meet the New Boss']

It's so good to have 'Supernatural' back. But it's just as delightful to have 'Supernatural' fans back. I look forward to hearing what you all have to say about the season 7 opener.

So, what if God was one of us? Except he's not really one of us, he's a mutated angel stuffed with millions of souls from purgatory plus lots of scary beasties from Ye Olden Days?

That wouldn't go so well. But it would make for a good hour of television.

'Supernatural' Season 7 Premiere Preview: Sam and Dean's Bond, Castiel's Fate & Crowley's Return

by Laura Prudom, posted Sep 22nd 2011 2:00PM
CastielThere's a reason why 'Supernatural' fans refer to the summer break between seasons as "hellatus" instead of "hiatus" -- since May's cliffhanger finale, viewers have been fretting over everything from the fate of Castiel to the fate of Dean's beloved Impala, and the producers have been content to tease for the past four months.

Thankfully, the wait is almost over; the show returns for its seventh season tomorrow night (Fri., Sept. 23 at 9PM) and it's a surprisingly satisfying premiere, managing to tie up many of the loose ends left in the season finale while simultaneously creating more problems for the long-suffering Winchesters to solve.

Hit the jump for our advanced review of the episode, plus highlights from the Q&A that executive producers Sera Gamble and Robert Singer conducted with press on Wednesday. Needless to say, there are light spoilers ahead.
