by Aimee Deeken, posted Mar 28th 2011 6:50AM
Playing Dodgeball on 'Taking on Tyson'After speaking to youths at the Jersey City Police Athletic League, Mike Tyson followed them outside for a game of dodgeball. He was quickly tagged. "You're out!" said the boy on 'Taking on Tyson' (Sun., 10PM ET on APL). The former champion replied sheepishly, "Yes, I am out. Don't rub it in, kid."

However, Tyson improved quickly and was the last man standing in the final round. But this time, winning wasn't the point. "This is gonna mean so much to them -- that they got to play dodgeball with Mike Tyson. I mean it's priceless, you can't say enough," said the PAL director.

Mike Tyson, 'Taking on Tyson'Mike Tyson came from a pretty dark place before he became the world heavyweight boxing champion. On 'Taking on Tyson' (Sat., 10PM ET on Animal Planet), he talked about a pivotal moment in his earlier life that changed the path he was on.

"I didn't care about my life no more," he said of those years. "I was really crazy. I'm surprised I didn't die or kill anybody. I was so infected with drugs and a crazy lifestyle. I was just addicted to chaos." But then he talked about losing Tito, and choked up.

A narrator filled in what Mike couldn't, revealing that Tito was one of Mike's closest friends, and that he was shot and killed outside of another friend's bar over a jewelry dispute.

Mike Tyson's Pigeons Compete in a Race over New York City on 'Taking on Tyson' (VIDEO)

Mike Tyson Races Pigeons on 'Taking on Tyson'In the second episode of 'Taking on Tyson' (Sun., 10PM ET on APL), Mike Tyson combines his love of competition and his passion for birds in his first pigeon race. Against two other teams, he releases his flock 80 miles away from their home.

The birds split into three groups, soaring over New York City's waterways, past the Statue of Liberty.

But do they make it to the "Tyson's Corner" coop fast enough to win? Sadly, no. If they'd been one minute and 33 seconds faster, Tyson's pigeons would have clinched the title.

Mike Tyson Reveals He Started Fighting for the Love of Birds on 'Taking on Tyson' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 7th 2011 4:57AM
Mike Tyson, 'Taking on Tyson'Mike Tyson has certainly had an interesting career path, with many ups and downs, and quite a few dark asides along the way. In 'Taking on Tyson' (Sun., 10PM ET on Animal Planet) we meet the kinder and gentler animal lover at the root of the boxing legend.

In fact, were it not for his love of birds, Tyson might have never taken up fighting at all. "People would take my jewelry, take my clothes, people would rob me, beat me up," he said of his childhood.

That changed when he was robbed of some of his birds and confronted one of the thieves, still holding one alive.

Mike Tyson is best known for his boxing career, that unfortunate ear incident, his bold decision to tattoo half his face and a hysterical cameo in 'The Hangover.' But did you know Tyson raises and races pigeons?
Mike Tyson, 'Taking on Tyson'
Yes, apparently the oft maligned "rat with wings" has a very noble past -- something involving Napoleon and the Queen, as Tyson tells it -- and in the near future the winged creatures and the boxing champ will share some screentime in 'Taking on Tyson' (premieres Sun., March 6, 10PM ET on Animal Planet).

I caught up with Tyson to hear about his new show, his feathered friends and why he's not the only character on the show that's eccentric and entertaining. Then he gave me the best boxing tip a girl could ever ask for.

Coming Soon: Mike Tyson's TV Show About Pigeons

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jan 7th 2011 7:35AM
Mike TysonGet ready to see a softer, gentler side of "Iron Mike" when his new show debuts on Animal Planet in March. We already know him as a heavyweight boxing champion, convicted rapist and occasional actor, but who knew that he's also a lifelong pigeon fancier?

His new show, 'Taking on Tyson', is a six-part documentary in which the former world heavyweight champion returns to his old Brooklyn neighborhood to train pigeons.

And not just any old airborne vermin, either, but racing pigeons, which are, according to Tyson, "the crème de la crème of the pigeon world. These are thoroughbred pigeons."

No Surprise: PETA Objects to Tyson's Bird Show

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 17th 2010 1:03PM
The other day when Animal Planet announced 'Taking on Tyson,' a new reality program about former heavyweight boxing champion -- and ex-convict -- Mike Tyson's love for pigeons, you had to be a little skeptical. It's hard to imagine the bruiser having a soft spot in his heart for fowl, but he does.

Well, apparently, the good folks at PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals, are not happy about the show. They aren't doubt Tyson's affection for the birds, but they deem pigeon racing -- and the breeding and caring for the birds -- as cruelty. It's as bad as dog fighting, they say.
