Soap News: Will Billy Miller Leave 'Y&R'?

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 18th 2011 3:00PM
billy_miller_the_young_and_the_restless_cbsIn a week when the soap world was filled with tumult, one of the stars of 'The Young and the Restless' is thinking about moving on. Billy Miller is reportedly in talks with 'The Young and the Restless' about renewing his contract, and it's not a done deal that he'll be sticking around. Miller, an Emmy winner for his role as Billy Abbott, is a star on the rise.

Reportedly, he may agree to stay with 'Y&R' if the show will give him enough 'outs' to let him work on other projects. This is a perk that's usually accorded to stars who are popular on the soap and being enticed to work on other projects.

Recently, Miller used time away from 'Y&R' to work on FX's 'Justified' in a multi-episode turn as a pedophile (in which he was excellent).

'Y&R' may be inclined to play ball with Miller, especially in light of the dual ABC axing last week -- actors are thinking twice about counting on soaps for future work. Even 'Y&R,' the top-rated soap in America, may not provide the kind of job security a soap job used to guarantee.

The show's spokesperson had no comment on Miller's status.

So forget about Laura returning to Port Charles to save Luke from his alcoholic haze on 'GH.' Genie will be heading to Genoa City to play Cane Ashby's mother.

Since Cane's just a ghost now, you can expect Mama Ashby to be flying to Wisconsin to meet her daughter-in-law Lily, and Cane's children, twins Matilda and Charlie.

What's intriguing is that Francis will likely be working with Tristan Rogers as Colin, Cane's Aussie mob boss father. Like Francis, Rogers is best known from his tenure on 'GH,' where he played super-spy Robert Scorpio. Francis's first appearance on-camera will be in May.

Soap News: Tyler Christopher Exits 'General Hospital' and More

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 21st 2011 2:00PM
nikolas_tyler_christopher_general_hospital_abcActor Tyler Christopher is leaving 'General Hospital.'

The star, who has played Nikolas Cassadine on and off since 1996, is moving on to another Disney project, the ABC Family series, 'The Lying Game.'

On Friday, Tyler was given the news that he was being let go, but the network would not immediately comment about the story. SoapCentral was able to confirm the exit from source.

Christopher's departure overlaps Rebecca Herbst being retained on the show. Their on-screen coupling, Nikolas and Liz, produced a son, Aiden, and Liz is on the verge of learning that he's not Nikolas's biological son after all.

That means 'GH' has a perfect way to write the Nikolas character off the show. He can leave Port Charles when he learns the bitter truth.

Christopher won't be off air any time soon, however. Nikolas remains in story lines through most of April.

Soap News: 'Y&R' Gets Kin Shriner and More

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 14th 2011 2:00PM
kin_shriner_general_hospital_abcSoap veteran Kin Shriner will be stepping in for Ted Shackelford on 'The Young and the Restless' in late April. Apparently Ted was unavailable for some upcoming scenes involving his character, Jeffrey Bardwell, prompting the producers to recast with Kin ... temporarily.

Shackelford is not a contract player, which means that Ted's free to work -- or not work -- when called. No reason has been given for Ted's absence from the show at this time.

Snagging Kin Shriner, however, is a bit of a coup for 'Y&R.' He's best known as Scott Baldwin on 'General Hospital,' the third part of the triangle that included Luke and Laura. But Shriner has been around daytime for years and proved to be more than just Scotty. He's one of daytime's most popular and compelling stars, great at playing good guys with an edge or bad guys with a good side.

In addition to 'GH,' he's appeared on 'Port Charles,' 'Santa Barbara,' 'The Bold and the Beautiful' and 'As the World Turns.'

vanessa_marcil_Giovinazzo_General_Hospital_brenda_abcIt seems like only yesterday that Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo returned to 'General Hospital' as Brenda Barrett, but if her words are to be taken as fact, her visit is drawing to a close.

In an interview with 'Access Hollywood,' Vanessa explained that she will be leaving GH shortly ... but is open to come back for return engagements in the future.

She didn't actually say she was leaving, but in answering questions about her current hot storyline on GH -- involving Brenda and Sonny's wedding, followed by her character's abduction -- Giovinazzo spoke about the soap in the past tense.

"After the wedding there is a lot of drama because my time is almost done, so we have to figure out how to pull back," she said. "It was like going to an incredible high school reunion. We had so much fun and I have so much respect for these people. They work so hard."

We'll report the "official" word once ABC Daytime issues a statement.
