David Letterman: Oprah "Hated" Me, Because I Stole Lunch From Her (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 29th 2010 2:48AM
David Letterman: Oprah 'Hated' Me, Becaue I Stole Lunch From HerTalk show host David Letterman had a legendary 16-year-long feud with his rival, Oprah Winfrey. But what was the cause of their mutual animosity? Most people think it was started when Dave hosted the Academy Awards in 1995. He kicked off show by making a really awkward (and unfunny) joke, where he pretended to introduce Oprah to Uma Thurman.

The "joke" was that he repeated their odd names again and again: "Uma ... Oprah! Oprah ... Uma!" he said, continuing the leaden gag for what seemed like an eternity. Ever since then, people have assumed that this is why Dave and Oprah disliked each other. But on 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS), Dave revealed the actual reason -- he stole a free lunch from Ms. Winfrey!

Bill Clinton on Losing Weight, Becoming a "Medical Experiment" -- Plus, a Dancing Dog! (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 21st 2010 2:36AM
Bill Clinton on Losing Weight, Becoming a 'Medical Experiment' -- Plus, a Dancing Dog!On 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), former President Bill Clinton showed up to discuss his recent weight loss, and he also compared heart surgery war stories with host David Letterman. Several years ago, Bill had a quadruple heart bypass, but Dave has done him one better with his own quintuple bypass surgery.

Since this operation in 2004, Clinton has become much healthier, and has tamed his love for fast food, meaning that clips like this one are no longer strictly accurate. (Although we're still big fans of the late, great Phil Hartman's Clinton impersonation.) Bill told Letterman that he now weighs the same amount that he did in high school. "You look fantastic," Dave said.

David Letterman Was In On the Joaquin Phoenix Hoax

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 20th 2010 11:00AM
Joaquin PhoenixAfter Casey Affleck confirmed to The New York Times last week that his Joaquin Phoenix "documentary" was a hoax, now it's been revealed that David Letterman was in on the whole thing.

'Late Show With David Letterman' writer Bill Scheft admitted on Friday that Phoenix's disastrous February 2009 appearance on the show was all planned, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along," Scheft said. "It was great television."

Joaquin Phoenix Facing Letterman Again

by PopEater Staff, posted Sep 13th 2010 4:30PM
Joaquin PhoenixMark your calendars: Phoenix vs. Letterman, round 2, will take place Sept. 22.

The last time Joaquin Phoenix appeared on the 'Late Show with David Letterman,' the interview was testy and awkward, and helped add yet another wrinkle to Phoenix's bizarre transformation from respected actor to amateur rapper. But things are bound to get a whole lot weirder come next week.

Phoenix will appear on the late night talk show Sept. 22, marking his first sit-down with Letterman since February 2009.

Casey Affleck's (faux?) documentary on Phoenix's transformation, called 'I'm Still Here,' is in theaters now and strangely enough includes the original interview with Letterman. It's very possible that Phoenix will plug the film on Letterman's show by airing a clip of himself talking to Letterman on Letterman's show. Mind blown?

Michael Douglas Discusses Cancer Diagnosis With Letterman Michael Douglas appeared on 'The Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) to discuss his recent struggle with throat cancer -- and even David Letterman had to mention that Mike was looking pretty good! Especially considering that he's battling a potentially terminal illness.

Douglas was only diagnosed with the disease three weeks ago. But by the time doctors discovered his throat cancer, it was already in the "advanced" stage. Michael just completed his first week of radiation and chemotherapy -- doctors now put his chances of recovery at 80% or better, which is great news.

Jessica Alba Jokes About Overfeeding Her Baby Daughter for Beauty RestParenting can be tough, right? One of the hardest parts of being a parent has to be getting up really early every morning, at whatever time that your kid wakes up. Luckily, on the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS), we get some special tips for avoiding this entire problem.

Actress Jessica Alba has a daughter -- Honor Marie -- who just turned two years old. Honor doesn't get out of bed until 9am. Host David Letterman is stunned -- his own son wakes up nearly three hours before that.

Dave asks Jessica for her secret -- her method for making sure Honor doesn't disturb her beauty rest. And here that is: "When she was -- like -- six months old, I would overfeed her," Alba says.

Kyra Sedgwick Accidentally Calls Cops to Tom Cruise's House (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 16th 2010 10:20AM
Kyra SedgwickKyra Sedgwick made a confession on 'Late Show with David Letterman' (weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS): She frequently makes social faux pas.

Letterman didn't believe it, so Sedgwick offered up a story for further proof.

Sedgwick was hanging out at Tom Cruise's house and was quite proud she hadn't said anything embarrassing. She had lasted through dinner and made it to socializing in the library when her eye spied a button. Just a button. No signs, just a button on a mantle.

"It wasn't attached to anything, didn't have any sign or anything ... just kind of this floating button, so I pressed it," Sedgwick said. "I don't know why, but I did, and nothing happened and I got scared, I got concerned."

So what did the mystery button do? Call the entire Beverly Hills Police Dept. to Cruise's house. "It was the panic button ... [the police] wouldn't leave until they saw Tom in person," she said.

Some dinner guest, right?

David Letterman Intimidated by a Woodpecker on 'Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted May 6th 2010 5:00AM
David Letterman Versus WoodpeckerDavid Letterman seemed fascinated by the Woody Woodpecker lookalike that Jack Hanna brought to the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) -- until Hanna expected him to get so close to it.

The animal expert asked Letterman to open his mouth toward the bird. "No, I'm not opening my mouth! You open your mouth!"

Hanna led by example, and the bird stuck out its tongue. The host suddenly got brave and let the woodpecker close to his face. The bird didn't peck -- he touched Letterman's face with his long tongue. Suddenly the 63-year-old turned into a giddy, hooting schoolboy.

Letterman Tops Leno ... For Good or For Now?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 10th 2010 9:00PM
Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey and David LettermanDoes NBC have something to worry about now that Leno is back in the 'Tonight Show' chair or is this just a case of settling the new guy in ... uh, again?

Dave Letterman's 'Late Show'
scored a 1.3 in the demo ratings while Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show' scored a 1.1 on Monday.

What's to blame? It's the lead-in's fault. CBS had the highest prime time lead-in while NBC finished a distant fourth or as Conan O'Brien would call it, "payback."

Can Leno pull things around or is this a sign of things to come?

Letterman Show Hires a Female Writer

by Brad Trechak, posted Feb 4th 2010 12:02PM
Oprah and DaveWhen it comes to television comedy, female writers are like diamonds. That is to say they are hard to find and tough enough to crack pavement when properly used. That being said, girl power has given late night television a kick in the crotch with the hiring of Jill Goodwin, who will now be on the writing staff of the 'Late Show with David Letterman.'

Goodwin has been involved with the show since 2001. She got the job the old fashioned way, by rising through the ranks. More power to her. It makes a person wonder when one of the networks will take a chance a have a female-hosted late night talk show. Females seem to dominate the daytime shows (see Oprah), but not at night. The last that I can recall was Joan Rivers way back when.

Given the recent allegations against Dave with regards to his recently admitted affair, it does raise eyebrows with regards to the timing. On the other hand, it's not like she was hired the next day and a lot has happened on late night television since then.

Letterman's Attack on Leno and NBC Continues (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 22nd 2010 11:00AM
David Letterman just can't help himself. The 'Late Show' host continued to gleefully bash Jay Leno and NBC over the network's late-night mess, mocking Leno's statement from earlier in the week that the scheduling upheaval wasn't his fault, and pledging to continue criticizing NBC in lieu of Conan O'Brien who will be legally forbidden to do so.

"Four days of rain in Los Angeles, and there's been a lot of flooding ... and when it floods like that they get the mudslides. It's been such a problem ... that, earlier today, Jay Leno held a press conference to announce that it wasn't his fault," Letterman quipped.

David Letterman Continues Assault on Jay Leno and NBC (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 21st 2010 12:00PM
David Letterman continued his relentless assault of Jay Leno and NBC last night during the opening monologue of 'The Late Show,' joking that Conan O'Brien has received a raw deal from the network and underscoring the notion that Leno is being opportunistic over O'Brien's plight.

"Conan O'Brien, he had 'The Tonight Show' and now he's leaving, and NBC is negotiating with him and it's that intellectual property," Letterman said. "He can't take his signature comedy bits with him. But that's okay, Jay will take them."
