The Venture Bros. Season Two DVD's scien-tastic cover art

by Annie Wu, posted Dec 21st 2006 8:09PM
Venture Bros.Warner Bros. just released the cover art for the upcoming Venture Bros. Season Two DVDs, and, I must say, it is absolutely amazing. I love the shadowy Hank and Dean being chased by the butterflies. I also like the vintage poster look and how the image is not joke-y at all, but actually really cool.

Although the First Season DVDs' simple skull design (and inside art by Bill Sienkiewicz) was nice, I think the new one will make my DVD collection even prettier. And I like pretty things.

All Annie wants for Festivus

by Annie Wu, posted Dec 18th 2006 9:34AM
Arrested DevelopmentIs it really time for Festivus again? Goodness. It feels like only yesterday that I typed up my last Festivus wishlist. Most of 2005's list went unfulfilled, although I did get a laptop (it does have WiFi, but runs on regular electricity, not dreams and smiles, as I had originally requested) and Horatio Sanz is no longer on Saturday Night Live. I suppose having two wishes granted is better than none. Well, I'm going to try again and, hopefully, this year I will have better luck. As you will see, my wishes are much more reasonable this time around and will be easier to meet... Then again, I have a very funny definition for "reasonable".

Venture Bros. season two release date

by Brett Love, posted Dec 1st 2006 10:10AM
the venture brosJackson Publick has announced on his livejournal that season two of The Venture Bros. is scheduled to be released on April 17th. He and Doc Hammer are currently finishing up the supplemental material for the set which includes commentaries for every episode. If you've seen the season one set, and listened to the commentaries there, they are sometimes rambling, and often off-topic, but always entertaining.

This go round James Urbaniak and Mike Sinterniklaas are also featured on some of the commentaries. In addition to that, you can look for more live action Venture Bros. and some 30 deleted scenes. Jackson also links to the season one set on Amazon which is now going for a ridiculously low price of $8.99. Just in time for Christmas.

The Five: What Brett is thankful for

by Brett Love, posted Nov 22nd 2006 12:33PM
TivoAs we all get ready to eat way too much pie and nap/shop (choose your own adventure) away a couple days it's time to give thanks for that which is good in television land. So, this year, I'm thankful for...

1: Tivo.
I resisted the siren's call of Tivo for a long time, opting instead to stick with the complex system of tapes, VCR's and my computer that had kept me up to date for years. But finally, after hearing again and again from the TV Squad readers to just get a Tivo already, I did. And it has been as good as everyone said it would be. I'll say it. You were all right. I was wrong.

I'm still hoping for all the goodies to work with OS X, or dare I say, Ubuntu, but for now I can begrudgingly run Windows. The ability to archive shows to another machine is fantastic, and if you do the math, it works out to about the same price as using tapes for storage anyway.

Check out Doc Hammer's deviantART page

by Adam Finley, posted Nov 18th 2006 8:01AM

doc hammer paintingYou know, you people should be thankful I have no life and spend way too much time on the internet. If it weren't for that, I never would have stumbled upon the deviantART page of Doc Hammer, writer and voice artist on The Venture Bros.

While I like pretty much everything Adult Swim offers, The Venture Bros. deserves special praise because it's one of the only hand drawn shows on during that block that has the mark of true artisans. The drawings, animation and writing are all top notch, and when you check out Hammer's oil paintings, you'll see why. The man is scary talented, and is allegedly self taught, or so says Wikipedia, a site I don't trust even though it's fast becoming the main information source for Web surfers. But I digress.

Snazzy auctions with Venture Bros., The Tick, Angel goodies

by Annie Wu, posted Nov 17th 2006 2:01PM
The Venture Bros.Lisa Hammer, voice of Triana Orpheus on The Venture Bros., heads a filmmaking company called Blessed Elysium, which usually makes a lot of wacky, surrealist short films of the German Expressionist persuasion. Her latest project is a feature film called POX, currently in post-production. The Blessed Elysium team is looking for a bit of help in funds for POX, so some excellent Ebay auctions have been set up. The TV-related items include this fantastic Venture Bros. lot, which contains a DVD, picture of Triana, and a few script pages with some Jackson Publick sketches (all items are signed). Hey hey! Perfect holiday gift for your favorite Venture Bros.-loving blogger friend whose name begins with an "A" and ends with "Nnie".

There are also some super-special panels from The Tick comic and a script from Angel, both signed by Ben Edlund. Oh, and here's a Vanna White doll. I'm not quite sure what's going on with that.

The Venture Bros: Showdown at Cremation Creek (Part II, Finale)

by Annie Wu, posted Oct 15th 2006 11:26PM
Brock Samson(S02E13) What a beautiful way to wrap up a season. Even the weakest parts of the episode were tremendously enjoyable.

There's a whole new order set up for the third season (which Adult Swim should greenlight, if they know what's good for 'em)... The Ventures and The Monarch have become friends (and if not "friends", then "non-enemies") and Phantom Limb is now a completely rogue villain (he has strayed from the Guild). Maybe P. Limb will recruit Triana's friend, Kim, to do his bidding. Maybe Brock will continue to train/work with the henchmen. Maybe, now that the Cocoon has been destroyed, The Monarch will start renting space in the Venture compound, like Doctor Orpheus (hilarity would surely ensue). There's a whole world of possibilities and I couldn't be more excited.

The Venture Bros: Showdown at Cremation Creek (Part I)

Venture Bros.(S02E12) Did I enjoy this episode? To put it simply... I think my brain exploded before the title sequence was over.

Even God couldn't handle the extreme levels of awesome... He attempted to delay the episode by throwing some lightning and striking the plane carrying the episode (if you didn't believe the bump explaining the situation, Jackson Publick commented on it here). Needless to say, even God Himself couldn't take down The Venture Bros.

By the way, this episode didn't premiere on The Fix (maybe for the reason mentioned above?), but it's on there now.

The Venture Bros: ¡Viva los Muertos!

by Annie Wu, posted Oct 2nd 2006 11:54PM
Venture Bros.(S02E11) This was, without a doubt, the bloodiest, sickest episode of The Venture Bros. yet. Even the bit before the title sequence was distinctly dark, but it wasn't until the very end that I realized the cause behind this dramatic shift in tone... This episode was penned by the one an only Ben Edlund (from The Tick fame). He contributed that shitty "Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner?" story (sorry, that was such a downer on the season) but I think he really redeemed himself here.

Personally, I prefer the pop culture reference-laden episodes by Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, but Edlund did a fair enough job here, offering his own take on the Venture world. Very enjoyable (and gross) indeed.

The Venture Bros: I Know Why The Caged Bird Kills

by Annie Wu, posted Sep 25th 2006 6:55PM
The Venture Brothers(S02E10) The main men behind The Venture Bros., Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, attended Georgia's DragonCon a few weeks ago and they graciously gave a special screening of this episode. A bunch of my luckier online buddies caught it and jumped back on the Internet to blab about how great it was, refuse to give spoilers, and squeal, "OMG. All your speculation has been wrong!" It kind of pissed off everyone else that didn't get to see the episode (the fact that we had to go through a Venture-less Sunday last week was insult to injury), but... oh, man... it was really worth the wait.

And this episode was jumping all over the place, so this post is pretty much going to do the same. Damn Venture Bros. and their multiple storylines.

Ask The Ventures

by Brett Love, posted Sep 19th 2006 12:06PM
Venture BrosAs Venture Bros. motors on through season two, Adult Swim took some time to sit down and interview creators Jackson Publick and Doc Venture. These are not just any questions though, they are the questions of the viewers. And aren't those the best kind?

Some of the topics hit on include when they decided to kill Dean and Hank, Dr. Girlfriend's first name, Turk 182, how long it takes to make an episode, and whether or not Dr. Venture got busy with Sky. Definitely a fun read for all Venture Bros. fans. And best of all, this is only part one. The second installment of the interview will be up next week. You can count on it... well, as much as you can count on any adult swim scheduling.

Adam's Fall TV Schedule

by Adam Finley, posted Sep 16th 2006 8:01AM

everybody hates chrisEver since getting a Tivo a little over a year ago, I no longer watch TV shows when they actually air. When I'm not catching up with what's on my recorder, I'm either reading, listening to podcasts, or pounding out a blog post about what I'm watching on television. The big deletion from my Tivo Season Pass this year is House. I still admire the show, but for me the magic is gone. The season opener sat on my Tivo for quite a few days, unwatched. When I finally sat down to view it I realized, about fifteen minutes into it, that I had completely lost interest in it. I didn't even finish the episode, and took it off my Tivo for good. Perhaps my attitude will change in the coming weeks, but who knows? Anyway, some of these shows are winding down their current seasons, some have yet to air. All times are Central because I live in Minnesota.

The Venture Bros: Guess Who's Coming To State Dinner?

by Annie Wu, posted Sep 11th 2006 7:58AM
Venture Bros.(S02E09) Oh, dear. I was waiting for something to kill the hot Venture Bros. streak, and, finally, it has come... in the form of a totally random Abe Lincoln ghost.

I guess I really should have known. A few months ago, Jackson Publick posted in his blog that the ninth episode's script was his least favorite. I see why. It didn't feel like a Venture script. The jokes were relatively dull (and really dated, in some cases), the plot was a little too much like a real boy adventurers' story, and we re-connected with an old character that we really didn't care about (I didn't care for him, anyway).
