'The Biggest Loser: Couples' Season 11, Episode 21 (Season Finale) Recap

Irene, Hannah & Olivia, 'The Biggest Loser' finale['The Biggest Loser: Couples' - 'Live Finale']

These shows being what they are, it can be a bit of an endurance test at times. Alison Sweeney has improved as a live host, but she still has some very awkward moments delivering lines.

And then there are just those awkward moments production-wise as they try to get through 20-odd weigh-ins and everything else. In fact, the weigh-ins is about all they had time for on this Season 11 Finale of 'The Biggest Loser.'

As this is Jillian Michaels's last season on the show I thought for sure we'd get some emotional tribute video to her and the impact she's made, but all we got was a few quick words when the trainers were brought out. Speaking of which, they did introduce her replacement.

'The Biggest Loser' Season 11 Finale: Before & After

by Maggie Furlong, posted May 25th 2011 2:22AM
When a show gets to its 11th season, you'd expect things to get a little predictable, but not on 'The Biggest Loser.'

This season saw women nab three of the top four slots -- including the series' first sisters to make it to the top together, fierce competitors Hannah and Olivia -- and some amazing transformations all around.

With over 2,000 pounds lost this season, the reveals were jaw-dropping and the stories were tear-jerkers in tonight's live finale. They also introduced brand-new trainer for next season, tennis pro Anna Kournikova.

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!! Take a look at some of the show's biggest losers of the season after the jump, find out who won the at-home $100,000 prize, and find out who took home the grand prize of $250,000 and the title 'Biggest Loser.'

'The Biggest Loser: Couples' Season Finale: And the Winner Is ... (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 25th 2011 1:50AM
'The Biggest Loser: Couples' finaleAlison Sweeney started the night by reminding us that this has been the longest season of 'The Biggest Loser: Couples' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC) so far. After 20 weeks of competition on the Ranch, it came down to a pair of sisters at the top of the heap, a father who was eliminated and earned his way back into the competition, and a young woman who lost her mother in the first week.

While sisters Hannah and Olivia were locks for competing for the $250,000 prize, Jay and Irene had their fates handed to them by America's vote. So they came out at the top of the hour and both looked absolutely fantastic -- though Irene should be careful about doing high kicks in a dress when coming through a paper picture of herself.

Final Four, 'The Biggest Loser: Couples 4'['The Biggest Loser: Couples' - 'Week Twenty']

"I want to say I can't believe it. But that's not true, because I CAN!" -- Hannah

Four entered this final week on The Biggest Loser campus and ... well, four people walked out. Couldn't we have had a two-hour makeover episode and shortened this penultimate installment to a single hour?

There may have been two challenges, a weigh-in and trips home for all four contestants, but it still felt like there was just so much padding. I felt like I could probably go ahead and do laundry or cook dinner while the episode was running and still not really miss anything.

Which Two Finalists Guaranteed Their Spot in 'The Biggest Loser' Finale? (VIDEO)

'The Biggest Loser'The penultimate episode of 'The Biggest Loser' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC) always seems to drag as there are only four contestants left, no one gets eliminated, and we've still got two hours to fill. But there are heartwarming moments, and this is a pretty special Final Four.

Jay is the comeback kid, who's decided he must have nine lives. He's been eliminated once, saved from elimination a second time and is still hanging in there. Then there's Irene, who lost her partner in the first week of the competition.

They're joined by sisters Hannah and Olivia, who nobody gave a shot at making it this far in the beginning. That they did it together is even more impressive. This week's weigh-in determines the top two, who are guaranteed a shot at the $250,000 prize in the finale. The bottom two plead their case to America and hope for a vote to put them in the Top Three.

The Final Five, 'The Biggest Loser'['The Biggest Loser: Couples 4' - 'Week Nineteen']

It was back to two-hour shows this week, and just in time. I don't think they could have covered five rounds of "exams," two challenges and a weigh-in this week in just one hour. That's right, Alison Sweeney announced that this was Final Exams week.

The contestants would be subjected to one test for each of the trainers, and then a final test with Alison. It was Spinning with Bob, Health and Wellness with Brett, Boxing with Cara, and Motivation with Jillian. Alison's test was a surprise for later.

The tests were to win a $10,000 prize, but it was a one-pound advantage at the weigh-in on the line in the physically brutal challenge of the week.

The $10,000 Decision That Could Change the Game on 'Biggest Loser' (VIDEO)

Olivia, 'The Biggest Loser'The results of this week's weigh-in determine the Final Four on 'The Biggest Loser' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC), which is the culmination of the contestants' work on the show. From there, two are definitely into the finale while the other two fight for America's vote. So this week was the last week your peers could vote you out.

Add that to the fact that you're smaller than you've ever been, and that a one-pound advantage can make a huge difference on the scale. But is it worth $10,000? Two contestants this week were given that very choice.

Tim Gunn, 'The Biggest Loser'['The Biggest Loser' - 'Week Eighteen']

It's Makeover Week on 'The Biggest Loser'! And to kick it off in style was none other than fashion guru Tim Gunn himself. Gunn arrived in style in a horse-drawn carriage, and announced himself as the contestants' fairy godfather.

With the lofty title came the power to grant them three gifts throughout this week's episode. As we only had an hour because of the second episode of 'The Voice,' there wasn't much time spent on their hair and wardrobe shopping. Basically, we got right down to the reveals.

Later, the contestants discovered there were two cars to be won, which is pretty solid odds considering there were only five people left. And then we had a very memorable weigh-in for two reasons, and both of them created very happy moments. It was a feel-good episode all around. Well, except for that yellow line.

Jillian Michaels, 'The Biggest Loser'['The Biggest Loser: Couples' - 'Week Seventeen']

"At this time I'm asking to leave 'The Biggest Loser' for personal reasons."

With the premiere of 'The Voice' truncating 'Loser' to a single hour this week and next, I was half-expecting to get a half-episode from the producers. After all, there were only seven contestants left in the game coming into this episode.

Instead, we packed "Favorites Week" into a single hour, which meant way less time with the trainers. But their absence was made up by the inclusion of past contestants Sam Poueu, Ali Vincent and Tara Costa. One of them even competed in this week's challenge against the contestants.

But the big shocker of the week came when the above quote was uttered at the Weigh-In. Who spoke it and whether or not they went through with it may change everything you thought about how the game would progress from here.

Alison Sweeney, 'The Biggest Loser'['The Biggest Loser: Couples' - 'Week Sixteen']

The rather blatant theme of the week was conquering fears. To help drive this point home, we had contestants diving off of cliffs, scaling mountains, riverboarding and bungee jumping. Alison Sweeney even got in on the action with a death-defying stunt of her own.

But it wasn't all fun and games, as the competition shifted to its final phase. That's right, while these guys haven't made it to Makeover Week yet, they did make it to Singles. Eight contestants, three trainers and another week in the paradise that is New Zealand.

After last week's uneven and in some cases disastrous turn on the scale, the contestants needed to buckle down and focus on their weight loss, which wasn't so easy to do with all those crazy adventures they were being taken on.

Hannah and Olivia Spend a Quiet Moment in New Zealand on 'Biggest Loser' (VIDEO)

Hannah & Olivia, 'The Biggest Loser: Couples'Thanks to a challenge win this week on 'The Biggest Loser: Couples' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC), Olivia and Hannah were able to get away from the game for a little while and enjoy New Zealand. It was a special moment for the two sisters to reflect on their time on the show.

"I just don't think that anybody thought that you or I would ever make it this far," Olivia said, and we have to admit she's were probably right about that.

"That's the best part about this," Hannah agreed.

The moment of quiet was just what Hannah needed to focus her thoughts. It's too easy to get caught up in the game and lose sight of your true goals. "There are great things ahead for me," she said. "And I never believed that until I came here."

Before the contestants even got a chance to recover from the "double" elimination last week when Brett was sent packing right behind Courtney, Alison Sweeney hit them with a bombshell.

For the next two weeks, 'The Biggest Loser: Couples' is relocating to Auckland, New Zealand. It's a huge trip and a very exciting opportunity for the contestants, but also a very daunting and frightening situation.

Travel wreaks havoc on weight-loss regimens, particularly if you're going to the opposite end of the world where your sleep schedule is going to have to be rewired. As expected, we saw some very interesting numbers on the scale, but the tension started long before that, as one contestant confronted his trainer for what he perceived as a lack of skill or effort.

'Biggest Loser: Couples': Cara Lashes Out When Ken Questions Her Technique (VIDEO)

Cara Is Defensive on 'Biggest Loser: Couples'Among the many lessons learned on 'The Biggest Loser: Couples' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC), one takeaway is that Cara is more sensitive than one might expect. Ken tells her, "I need more guidance from you on what I should be doing, even with a couple of the injuries I have."

She responds defensively, "I've done nothing but work with you since day one ... I'm working around your injuries." He says, "I feel like [the other trainers] have a level of expertise nobody else has."

"Final Four. It's everything to me." -- Eliminated contestant

Finally, nobody played it stupid. Nobody got distracted by gameplay or made bad decisions to sabotage themselves. As such, we may have gotten our first genuine Weigh-In for weeks and weeks.

Unfortunately, that does nothing to make the eliminations themselves any easier to bear. This week's was especially poignant as it's an absence that will be felt throughout the rest of the competition.

A Heartbreaking Elimination on 'The Biggest Loser' (VIDEO)

Jillian Michaels, 'The Biggest Loser'It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Red Team on 'The Biggest Loser' (Tue., 8PM ET on NBC). After two losses in a row, the only contestant left for Brett Hoebel was Courtney, which put a lot of pressure on her this week. The other three teams each have three members, but in a way that makes it harder for them.

Especially when one of those teams dropped only seven pounds between the three members. Bob Harper was terrified his Blue Team would fumble on the scale after a couple of strong weeks in a row, while a Hollywood night out on the town for one team left their trainer more than concerned.

It was refreshing to see everyone coming to the Weigh-In committed to the process and focused on their weight loss rather than gameplay. But that didn't make the elimination any easier.
