Hardly Knew You: The Short-Lived Shows of 2010

by Rich Keller, posted Dec 20th 2010 5:40PM
'Lone Star,' which garnered huge pre-season buzz, was cancled by FOX after only two episodes. Not everything is a long-running classic in the fickle world that is television. You may feel that your show has the right mix of acting, writing and directing to be a favorite for indefinite first-run and syndicated airings, but the viewers may have other ideas.

And when that happens, your show could disappear before the cover art is even dry for the complete series DVD set.

The year 2010 had no shortage of these short timers. In fact, the 2010-2011 season has already seen not one, not two but three series that bowed out after only two episodes. This, despite long-promoted hype and pre-season buzz. Mentioned here are the 2010 programs that had shorter runs than the presidency of William Henry Harrison.

Eric Braeden Responds to 'D-Bag' Claim, Jim Carrey to Host 'SNL' and More

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 17th 2010 6:30PM
Eric BraedenEric Braeden's got some fighting words for Neil Patrick Harris.

"If he is a worthy adversary, he'd better not cross my path," the actor told Entertainment Weekly after Harris called him a "d-bag" on Twitter earlier today.

Harris backtracked shortly after his statement, which he made in reaction to Braeden backing out of a guest spot at the last minute. "Now I feel bad for the D-bag comment. Don't know the guy personally. I'm just fiercely protective of our show," he wrote.

Harris shouldn't get too worried, though, because Braeden is willing to forgive and forget. "I will let bygones be bygones," he said to EW.

Will 'The Good Guys' Survive for Another Season?

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 13th 2010 10:45AM
'The Good Guys'Hopefully you said your goodbyes to 'The Good Guys' on Friday night, because things aren't looking too good for a season 2 renewal.

Ratings for the struggling Fox series were disappointing this weekend, with Friday's season 1 finale finishing second-to-last out of all programs -- new or repeats -- that aired on the night, Deadline Hollywood reports. The one show it beat? A rerun of 'The Good Guys.'

Creator Matt Nix tweeted on Saturday, "Thanks to all who checked out the finale of #TheGoodGuys. It was truly a joy to make from start to finish."

'The Good Guys': "I'm Gonna Protect Your Socks Off" (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 25th 2010 7:25AM
'The Good Guys': There are good cops, and then there are bad cops. And then there are cops who go too far, and get personally involved in a case. Passion is important, especially if you're a renegade policeman. But an excess of passion can get sort of ... weird. Which is the problem on 'The Good Guys' (Fri., 9PM ET on Fox).

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

Detectives Jack and Dan (Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford) must go undercover to stop a group of arsonists. But when Dan meets the innocent woman he'll be protecting, he's instantly smitten. Meredith (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) is all alone, and could be attacked by the criminals at any second.

Dan decides to keep her company. But the detective wants to provide some very sexy company. "I will protect you personally," he says. "I'm gonna protect your socks off."

'The Good Guys' Face a Permanent Vacation -- Will the Show Survive? The cop buddy show 'The Good Guys' (Fri., 9PM ET on Fox) has been away on hiatus. The series debuted this summer -- receiving critical praise, but also some fairly lousy ratings. Now, it's back to finish up its first season -- mainly because the Fox Network had already ordered a season-long run of the show.

But on the new episode following the break, the main characters already find themselves facing a vacation that could last ... forever. Will they (and the series) manage to survive?

Should 'The Good Guys' Get a Reboot or Just the Boot?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Aug 10th 2010 7:10PM
Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford on Fox's 'The Good Guys' 'The Good Guys,' Fox's procedural cop comedy, seemed like a perfect storm from the start. It had a fresh, funny take on one of television's most storied, copied and cloned genres and made it a hard sell for audiences who crave change as much as they crave a TV that requires them to get out of their chairs to change the channel.

Sure, audiences love new concepts and bright ideas, but TV is still a very passive medium and shows that require your full attention like 'The Good Guys' -- with its unique ability to jump forward and backward in time to throw new twists into the plot -- usually don't make it to the finish line (in their case, two episodes shy of the checkered flag).

This doesn't mean the show is down for the count, though. Deadline reports that Fox still hopes to save the show by giving it a major retooling for the fall season. It's a show worth saving. Here's how they're doing it -- and whether it might work.

The Perfect Woman on 'The Good Guys' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 3rd 2010 2:50AM
The Perfect Woman on 'The Good Guys'A gigantic explosion. Plus some sexual tension. That's the recipe on 'The Good Guys' (Mon., 9PM ET on Fox).

[Spoiler alert.]

Detective Dan Stark (Bradley Whitford) falls for a girl named Justine (Lola Glaudini). And she's pretty cute, too! Unfortunately, she's not at all into him. ... Or so one would think. Dan tries to "get with" Justine, but is brushed off in pretty much the rudest way possible.

Still, Dan being Dan, he refuses to give up on the perfect lady. He invites Justine back to his disgusting trailer; i.e. "the aluminum love-cradle." Yuck! Such an invitation wouldn't work out for most of us; but then, Dan is fairly suave, in his retro 1970s kind of way. Will he manage to make a love connection?

Bradley Whitford Shows Off His Porn Acting Skills -- and His Mustache (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 29th 2010 9:30PM
Bradley Whitford Shows Off His Porn Acting Skills -- and His MustacheYou might know actor Bradley Whitford from the sitcom 'The Good Guys.' Or perhaps you remember him from 'The West Wing.' But on 'The Kilborn File' (weeknights, 7PM ET on Fox), Bradley discusses the most important thing about himself -- the fact that he's from the great state of Wisconsin! (That's the Badger State, if you need a little help with that one.)

Host Craig Kilborn is a Midwestern boy himself -- he's from the great state of Minnesota. And while Bradley is on the show, the two of them discuss several important Midwestern issues, including how "horrible" Wisconsin accents are. Bradley points out that this is why there are no great female porn stars from Wisconsin -- because of the weirdness of the accent. Then, he does a impression of how a Wisconsin porn starlet might talk: "OHH GAWD YAH ... YAH, YOU'RE DOIN' GREAT DOWN THERE, Y'KNOW?" Good stuff.

An Underwear Attack on 'The Good Guys' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 27th 2010 2:50AM
An Underwear Attack on 'The Good Guys'If you've come to see nearly naked images of Bradley Whitford, then you've come to the right place. On the latest episode of 'The Good Guys' (Mon., 9PM ET on Fox), Bradley -- as Detective Dan Stark -- decides to infiltrate the mob. Unfortunately, his undercover endeavors involve parading around in a very small pair of underwear. And even his partner Jack (Colin Hanks) has to see it.

"Is that really necessary?!" Jack asks, as his entirely undressed partner is beating him senseless as part of the undercover mission. And we have to ask that too. Is this necessary? Did we really need to see Bradley Whitord in a pair of skimpy lingerie? Aah! Our eyes are bleeding! Our eyes are bleeding! Sigh.

What to Watch: July 26 - August 1

by Stephanie Earp, posted Jul 26th 2010 2:00AM
The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All - Monday July 26, 8pm ET/PT, Citytv/ABC

Last week, the summary for the episode provided by the station referred to Nicole as Frank's ex-girlfriend, the one who got away. This week, the pretense is dropped and the summary just admits what we all knew -- she's his girlfriend. Incredibly, this complete undermining of the delicate fiction of the show's universe is not going to be the hot topic tonight. Instead that honour goes to Justin, who won't be showing up. All the better to scapegoat you with, J.

'The Good Guys' Says an Early Goodbye to Its Summer Season

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 22nd 2010 6:29PM
'The Good Guys'Maybe FOX is hoping absence will make the heart grow fonder. The network announced they'd be ending the summer run of freshman series 'The Good Guys' earlier than planned, according to The Futon Critic. 'The Good Guys' will wrap its current season Monday, August 2. New episodes were originally slated to run until August 23.

Presumably, the skipped episodes will be incorporated into the upcoming fall season, though there's been no official word. While Monday, August 9 will be consumed by the 'Teen Choice 2010' special, August 16 will see 'Lie to Me' shift back an hour to 'The Good Guys' current 9 PM ET slot, with 'House' settling back into its Mondays at 8 PM ET anchor position.

Getting Stupid and Impulsive on 'The Good Guys' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 19th 2010 11:45PM
Getting Stupid and Impulsive on 'The Good Guys'Working with an ex-lover can really suck. (And on a personal note: your humble TV Squad blogger has worked with his ex-girlfriend, and it truly ... really ... sucked.) The latest episode of 'The Good Guys' (Mon., 9PM ET on Fox) deals with this very lame dilemma.

[Spoiler alert.]

Jack (Colin Hanks) is having some trouble with his ex-girlfriend Liz (played by Jenny Wade). The "trouble" is this: he's still in love with her, and she has a new boyfriend. So Jack decides to do something "stupid and impulsive." He rushes into Liz's office, grabs her in his arms, and plants a seemingly never-ending kiss on her lips.

No, Jack, no! Getting "stupid and impulsive" with a girl is always a bad way to go. Except for the approximately 5 percent of the time that it actually works out. So the question is this: will our young hero find new love with an old girlfriend?

Watch a TV Squadder on Monday's 'The Good Guys' (VIDEO)

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jul 17th 2010 2:00PM
Finally, after weeks of waiting, worrying and other bodily functions that start with "w," I finally get to see the thing that I've been flagrantly bragging about to my friends, my enemies and my "frienemies." You know who you are.

This Monday's episode of 'The Good Guys' features scenes from my "extra-ing" on the set earlier this summer. I'm super psyched to see it and I know everyone here at TV Squad HQ is too, mainly so I'll stop talking about it.

Thankfully, the folks at Fox were kind enough to send me a preview that features me in the background in all my blurry delicious glory. Next week's episode also has a guest appearance by Dan Castellaneta from 'The Simpsons' and the usual hijinks that have made the show so much fun to watch. So don't just watch it for my tiny contribution (i.e. watch it for my tiny contribution, I'm in the background at the :30 mark just as Colin Hanks says "I'm calling it in".)

'The Good Guys' Deal With a Big Explosion in a Tiny Room (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 13th 2010 1:45AM
'The Good Guys' Deal With a Big Explosion in a Tiny RoomThere are a lot of reasons to avoid being stuck in a small room with someone else. Cramped quarters are just generally unpleasant, for one thing. And close proximity may lead to increased emotions -- and the potential for a fight to break out. But on 'The Good Guys' (Mon., 9PM ET on Fox), our heroes find a whole different reason to avoid a small room.

[Spoiler alert.]

Jack and Dan (Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford) find themselves on the trail of a pair of gun smugglers. But their pursuit leads them to be trapped in a very tiny room -- where they are being shot at by a bad guy. And to make things even worse, there are huge boxes of explosives and ammunition in the room. Which are then blown up by one of the smugglers.

"This is why I hate small rooms!" says Dan, just before the massive exploding fireball engulfs the place. Will our heroes be okay?
