NBC's 10PM Dramas Trail Last Year's 'Jay Leno Show' Ratings

by Gary Susman, posted Oct 26th 2010 1:30PM
ParenthoodWas Jeff Zucker right all along? The NBC boss was vilified last year for scrapping NBC's entire slate of 10PM dramas and replacing them with 'The Jay Leno Show,' a move that turned out to be both a ratings and PR disaster, one that led to Leno's hasty return to 'The Tonight Show' and the network's costly and embarrassing loss of Conan O'Brien.

This year, however, the fall dramas NBC has aired at 10PM have largely failed to draw even a paltry 'Jay Leno Show'-sized audience among the key 18-to-49 demographic, with one of those dramas, Friday night's 'Outlaw,' already canceled and replaced with news standby 'Dateline.'

Not that CBS and ABC should gloat; judging by the trouble those networks are also having at 10PM, maybe Zucker was right, and scripted dramas simply don't work at 10PM anymore.

Eight Shows Least Deserving of an Emmy Nomination

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jun 24th 2010 4:00PM
Jeff Dunham and Achmed the Dead TerroristIt's a shame that television doesn't have the equivalent of the Razzies, an award that extends much needed raspberries. It's such a veritable gold mine of sub-standard entertainment that the list of nominees could circle the globe twice and the awards show itself would take three days.

Then again, the Emmys are long enough.

Thanks to this lack of a punching bag for bad television, tons of horrific, terrible and just plain bad shows don't get the golden punch to the groin that they so richly deserve. They simply crawl back into the darkness unscathed, fresh-faced and ready to strike again. So in honor of Bob's "Nine People and Shows that Deserve Emmy Nominations," here are the shows that would have won big at the Emmys ... in the Bizarro World!

Lunatics Running The Asylum: 'The Marriage Ref' Could Use a Real Coach

by Mark Wigmore, posted Mar 26th 2010 8:41PM

For nine seasons, NBC and Jerry Seinfeld successfully dominated the ratings with the self-proclaimed show about nothing. According to producers, the rules of the ever-popular and manically-rerun 'Seinfeld' series were simple – no hugging, no learning. Who knew that Seinfeld could accomplish all of these goals all over again with his new series, 'The Marriage Ref'?

Now nearing half a dozen episodes, 'Ref' attempts to solve the little squabbles plaguing married couples, pegging one against the other in a win or lose contest. The show found a home on NBC thanks to the tragedy that was 'The Jay Leno Show,' the 10 pm-slotted experiment that went horribly wrong.

The Seinfeld-produced reality/game show was fast-tracked into the open Thursday position. 'Ref' features stand-up comedian and long-time pal to Jerry, Tom Papa, as the so-called Ref. According to his website bio, he has no experience in the field of couples therapy or any other professional credit in the field. That's why we decided to talk to a real psychotherapist, someone who actually dispenses advice to warring couples.

Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show' Promo Gets a Music Makeover

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 24th 2010 9:00AM
NBC has been recycling their 'Jay Leno Show' promos to prep for Leno's return to 'The Tonight Show' slot. Could there be a clearer metaphor?

Anyway, the new promos have been using a cover version of the Beatles' "Get Back" to not-so-subtly greet the host back from prime time hell. But one very clever YouTube user found a much more appropriate song to accompany Jay on his return back to 11:30 p.m.

Kevin Eubanks Quitting 'The Tonight Show'?

by Kona Gallagher, posted Feb 16th 2010 6:02PM
kevin eubanksMaybe he's on Team CoCo? Sources have told Extra that Kevin Eubanks, who has been Jay Leno's band leader since 1994, is quitting. Eubanks joined the 'Tonight Show' band in 1992, after releasing several albums. He followed Leno over to his primetime experiment, 'The Jay Leno Show,' but sources say that Eubanks is "ready for a change" and won't be returning to 'The Tonight Show' with Leno.

This news hasn't been confirmed -- in fact, NBC denied it to one of our fellow AOL writers -- so we have no further insight into Eubanks' alleged decision. TV Guide Canada is speculating that the recent Late Night Wars and the resulting instability has something to do with Eubanks leaving, which is understandable. Even though the folks who work for Leno made out better than those who worked for Conan, the constant moving around and uncertainty can't make for a pleasant working environment.

69 Percent of TV Guide Readers Won't Watch Leno

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 12th 2010 10:06AM
Internet polls are always a little squiffy when it comes to interpreting actual raw data. But if I were Jay Leno right now, my chin would be quivering right about now.

TV Guide conducted an online poll of their readers and 69 percent of the respondents said they used to watch Jay either on 'The Tonight Show' or his short-lived 'Jay Leno Show' but won't when he returns to the post local news time slot.

Another 15 percent said they would watch Jay in his new time slot, 12 percent said they never watched him in the first place and the remaining 4 percent were undecided.

Final 'Jay Leno Show' Airs Tonight

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 9th 2010 11:03AM
LenoThis little bit of news has been lost in all of the Leno/Conan/NBC chaos (and overshadowed by this past Sunday's Super Bowl commercial with Jay, Dave, and Oprah), but tonight is the last episode of 'The Jay Leno Show.'

The guests tonight are Ashton Kutcher, Gabourey Sidibe, and Bob Costas. I know, they're not exactly the type of guests that a person has on their final show (no offense to Mr. Kutcher, Ms. Sidibe, or Mr. Costas), but this probably was not meant to be a final show when they were booked. Or maybe it's no big deal even to them and they just want to end things.

I'm sure there's going to be a lot of tears tonight as Jay shows a montage of all of the great bits from his show. Set your DVRs America!

I don't know what's in store for this Jay Leno person after his show ends tonight. But he's a funny, talented guy, and I wouldn't be surprised if NBC gave him another show at some point.

Jay Leno Dishes on the Super Bowl Commercial (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 9th 2010 1:58AM
Jay Leno Dishes on the Super Bowl CommercialThe Internet is still abuzzin' over the Super Bowl commercial with Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman. Leno talked about it on 'The Jay Leno Show' (weeknights, 10PM on NBC), and says he flew to New York City in complete secrecy to shoot the spot. He even disguised himself to get into Letterman's studio (which must have been a blast for Leno!), so none of their staff knew anything about the taping.

But the best part? Any animosity between Leno and Letterman seems to be a thing of the past. "I walk in, I see Dave, he puts his hand out and I shake hands, and you know, whatever happened over the past 18 years, disappeared," said Leno. "It was great to see my old friend again." All together now -- Awwwww! What a sweet little Valentine's story between old friends. Group hug.

Wanda Sykes Slams NBC's Black History Month Menu (VIDEO)

Wanda Sykes Slams NBC's Black History Month MenuFried chicken, collard greens, jalapeno cornbread, black-eyed peas ... let's face it, if you're talking Black History Month, these foods seem like good choices.

Not according to Wanda Sykes, who riffed on 'The Jay Leno Show' (weeknights, 10PM ET on NBC) about the cuisine being served in the NBC cafeteria. "Jay, what is happening at NBC? Is the whole damn network on medical marijuana? What the hell is going on over here?"

Ok, maybe she's got a point. But really, it's sort of cool that the cafeteria served groovy Old South food. We'd like to know, what's the matter with that?

Jessica Biel Eats Chocolate-Covered Cricket on 'Jay Leno' (VIDEO)

Jessica Biel eats chocolate-covered cricket on 'Jay Leno'You know how Jay Leno has that "Earn Your Plug" segment on 'The Jay Leno Show' (weeknights, 10PM ET on NBC)? Jessica Biel definitely earned her plug on last night's show.

Oh, the chocolate-covered strawberries were a treat, and even the chocolate-covered pizza wasn't so bad. But when she fearlessly ate the chocolate-covered cricket that Jay brought out, he was downright impressed!

Catch Biel in the star-studded 'Valentine's Day,' in theaters Feb. 12.

Jessica Alba Gets a Sexy Golf Lesson on 'The Jay Leno Show' (VIDEO)

The Jay Leno Show, Jessica Alba, Sexy GolfThe words "golf" and "sexy" aren't usually used in the same sentence -- unless you're Jessica Alba getting a golf lesson on 'The Jay Leno Show' (weeknights, 10PM ET on NBC).

Things got interesting when Alba was told to "stroke the ball to the hole" ("I'm a married woman!"), and Jay Leno even managed to get up close and personal during the lesson. Catch Alba in 'Valentine's Day,' arriving in theaters Feb. 12.

Obama Impersonator Pokes Fun at Sarah Palin, John Mayer on 'Leno' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 29th 2010 11:00AM
A Barack Obama impersonator appeared on 'The Jay Leno Show' last night (weeknights, 10PM ET on NBC), and poked fun at Sarah Palin's use of the imaginary word "mandation" in her critique of Obama's State of the Union address, and John Mayer's comment in a recent Rolling Stone interview that he's "masturbated himself out of serious problems."

"Mandation isn't even a word. It sounds like something our President Bush would say," the impersonator said, then lapsing into a spot-on Bush impression.

During last night's "10 @ 10" Q&A segment on 'The Jay Leno Show' (weeknights, 10PM ET on NBC), Senator-elect Scott Brown discussed the possibility of posing nude again, his chances at beating President Obama at basketball, and how his daughters reacted to his election-night gaffe when he stated they're "available."

"It's almost 30 years later. I'd probably have to do it for Mature Senior or AARP magazine," Brown said of posing nude again like he did for Cosmopolitan in 1982.

Leno refuses to admit to Oprah that he's culpable in Conan mess

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 28th 2010 5:55PM
Jay Leno talks to Oprah Winfrey
When you look at the surface, it seemed like Jay Leno was quite revealing during his interview with Oprah Winfrey today. He said that he was "devastated" when NBC came to him in 2004 and told him that they wanted to give Conan O'Brien The Tonight Show. He claimed he was "embarrassed" by what he called "a big mess," and that NBC would have handled it better if "they came in and shot everyone. Then it would have only been a two-day story."

But when Oprah repeatedly tried to get Leno to react to how most of the public is reacting to this story -- that Jay should have stepped aside to give Conan a chance to succeed, and that he is unfairly taking back Conan's dream job -- Leno refused to play along. Not sure if he did so because he's truly not self-aware of what this whole mess looks like or he just doesn't care. But as far as Jay's concerned, this was all just business, and his decision to take back Tonight and Conan's departure are mutually exclusive events.

Clips of the interview are after the jump.

Mel Gibson on Boston's Love of Profanity (VIDEO)

Mel Gibson dropped by 'The Jay Leno Show' to promote his new movie 'Edge of Darkness,' in which he plays a cop seeking revenge for the murder of his daughter, and he talked about a run-in with a bachelorette party while filming the movie in Boston.

"I bumped into a drunken bachelorette party ... I was just walking back to my hotel ... and they grabbed me on the street," Gibson said, noting how they exclaimed their surprise with profanity in typical Boston fashion. "Demure young ladies, but mouths like sailors."
