Meredith Vieira Likely Leaving 'Today' In September

by Jean Bentley, posted Apr 5th 2011 5:40PM
Meredith VieiraMeredith Vieira will most likely step down as co-anchor of 'Today' when her contract expires in September, according to a new report from TV Guide.

Vieira is apparently "beloved" by the 'Today' cast and crew, but a combination of long, tiring hours and personal struggles (her husband is battling multiple sclerosis and cancer) are likely the reason why she'd leave. Vieira would only sign a one-year deal when her contract expired last year, and has been open about her husband's health problems.

However, NBC doesn't want to see her go. "NBC is doing everything they can to convince her to stay," an insider told TV Guide.

After a Robbery, Facing Eviction on 'Harry Loves Lisa'Unlike many couples on reality TV, Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna seem like they're genuinely in love. They've been married for 13 years now, and their relationship is still going strong. So they've got the whole "marriage" thing figured out. But everything else is up for grabs.

Both actors are trying to revive their fading television careers. Lisa is considering surgery to reduce her cosmetically altered lips (which have made her the butt of many jokes). And during a recent appearance on 'Today,' the couple learned that their high-end clothing store was being robbed.

While on 'The Today Show.' Hamlin made a live phone call about the robbery, while Lisa said this was their fourth break-in. Bad luck! But on the new 'Harry Loves Lisa' (Wed., 10PM ET on TV Land), things get even worse.

'Today' Will Allow Same-Sex Couples to Enter Wedding Contest

by Laura Prudom, posted Jul 9th 2010 11:30AM
Meredith VieriaIt's a brand new day on the 'Today' show: According to The Wrap, NBC is changing the rules for its morning show's annual wedding contest in order to allow same-sex couples to apply.

The contest, dubbed "Modern Day Weddings," offers one winning couple an all-expenses paid wedding to be broadcast live on 'Today.' Previously, same-sex couples were barred from entering because NBC reasoned that "the couple must be able to be legally married in New York, which is where the wedding will take place."

But following a campaign by gay rights organization GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), which saw NBC inundated with thousands of letters, emails and tweets decrying the rigid rules, the network has agreed to change the contest's eligibility to an all-inclusive scope.

'Today' Needs to End its Kate Gosselin Addiction

by Joel Keller, posted Jun 4th 2010 4:02PM
Kate Gosselin on 'Today' June 4The other day, I wrote about how Fox might find they have diminishing returns with 'Glee' when it enters its third season. Well, the same can be said of the 'Today' show and what seems to be their favorite guest, Kate Gosselin.

It feels like every couple of months, Kate appears in Studio 1A, all coiffed, perma-tanned and ready to bear her feelings to Meredith Vieira or whoever happens to be there that day. She did it just this morning, coming on to promote her return to TLC in 'Kate Plus 8' and to yet again flog her book, 'I Just Want You To Know.'

Here's the problem: She did the same thing in April, promoting the book as well as her appearance on 'Dancing with The Stars.' In fact, in the year or so since Kate's marriage to the Ed Hardy-lovin' Jon Gosselin started to dissolve (yes, I know ... where does the time go?), Kate has been on 'Today' a whopping six times, including the excerpts from the TLC special she did with Natalie Morales. That's approximately once every other month. She's been on so often, I'm starting to think she should be in the promos with Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann.

President Obama Talks College Hoops with Matt Lauer (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Mar 30th 2010 4:00PM
President Obama Talks College Hoops with Matt LauerBarack Obama appeared on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC) to talk a little college basketball with Matt Lauer. There, it was revealed that the President had picked none of the Final Four teams correctly.

"How's your bracket look?" Lauer asked Obama. Obama replied, "It is completely blown up ... It is a sign that I was paying singular focus on heath care." "That's your excuse and you're sticking with it?" asked Lauer.

Since Obama's college basketball picks have all lost, Lauer asked the President for his revised choice for the team that will win it all. Obama's choice? West Virginia. Changing your college picks in the middle of the tournament? Is this what was meant by "Change You Can Believe In?"

Natalie Morales Rides a Dragon on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Mar 26th 2010 4:29PM
Let's face it. We all want to learn how to ride dragons. But so few of us ever get the chance. But on the most recent episode of 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), correspondent Natalie Morales got to live out all our dreams, riding on top of an enormous replica of a dragon from the new film 'How to Train Your Dragon.'

So what is the experience of riding a huge dragon actually like? According to Morales, "I feel like I'm on one of those little kids' rides. You know; you put the quarter in and go." Excellent. And thank you, Natalie, for living out all of our nerd fantasies for us.

James Spader Has No Qualms About Playing a Fairy (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Mar 26th 2010 3:52PM
James Spader Considers Playing a FairyOn Friday's 'The Today Show' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), James Spader discussed the difficult casting decisions that all actors must face. He's currently on Broadway in David Mamet's 'Race,' about three attorneys offered the chance to defend a black man against a white woman.

Not one to let a serious matter stop her, host Kathie Lee Gifford asked Spader "Then why didn't you want to play like a little fairy in 'Midsummer Night's Dream' as opposed to being a lawyer again?"

Spader seemed surprisingly on board with the idea of playing a fairy, even suggesting that his character in 'Race' could sprout wings. As the segment progressed, it had the most uses of the word "fairy-- without any sexual innuendo attached to it -- that you've ever heard.

And So It Begins: 'Today's' Annoying Olympics Coverage

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 12th 2010 12:29PM
Roker and Lauer on the two-man luge at the 2006 Torino OlympicsAlthough I'm generally a 'Today' show loyalist, for the next two weeks, I'm going to be a 'Good Morning America' fan.

Why? Three words: The Winter Olympics.

Every two years, since NBC started carrying the Olympics, they turn their top-rated morning news show into essentially the Games' morning recap show. Sure, you still get that first half hour of pure news, but after that, the show becomes all-Olympics, all the time, from examining the personal stories of the athletes, to travelogues about whatever exotic locale the Games are in that year, to deep, 'SportsCenter'-like examination of the previous night's results.

But that's not the part that annoys me the most. When the hosts go out and try to do the Olympic sports themselves, the cringe factor goes up exponentially. Especially when Matt Lauer and Al Roker are involved.

More NBC surprises: they wanted Barbara Walters back

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 11th 2010 3:30PM
Barbara WaltersThe interesting moves by NBC aren't just in late night and prime time. Veteran newswoman Barbara Walters has revealed that NBC News tried to get her back.

On this morning's episode of ABC's The View, the women were talking about Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien and Walters said that last June, Jeff Zucker and other execs at NBC made an offer to Walters to come back to NBC, where she started as a host and reporter on The Today Show many years ago. Walters says she was flattered by the offer and "the fact that they would make an offer to someone of my age and consider that I still had years ahead," but decided to stay at ABC because she's happy there. Zucker then offered Walters her own show every single night at 10PM, but she still turned them down.

OK, I made up that last part.

Walters says that even if she had gone to NBC, she would have still kept her spot on The View because it's a daytime show. Though something tells me that NBC would have had something to say about that.
