'South Park' Will Skewer Tiger Woods

by Brad Trechak, posted Mar 15th 2010 9:30AM
South ParkWednesday will be bringing us the season premiere of 'South Park,' and the topic of the episode has already been revealed. Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be raking Tiger Woods over the coals along with the concept of sex addiction in America.

The season premieres of 'South Park' tend to be a little more thoughtful than the rest of the season, usually because Trey and Matt have had some break time to think about things. The last season premiere brought us the Jonas Brothers and "Mister Mouse," which was a highlight of the season along with 'Margaritaville.'

On a related note, the show is only five episodes away from its 200th, which will be broadcast next month. Their 100th episode dealt with the mood of the country after 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq and ended with a sing-off between a rock singer (Stan's father) and a country singer. Hopefully, the 200th will be equally as entertaining and insightful. Set your schedule accordingly.

Loni Love Has Two Words for Tiger Woods (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 23rd 2010 4:16AM
Chelsea Lately, Loni Love, Tiger WoodsLoni Love has two words for Tiger Woods. But we can't say them here, because the Internet language cops would come after us.

Instead, we'll just tell you that Love's beef with Woods is not his penchant for bedding every girl who ventures within spitting distance, but rather his statement in 1992 that he's not black.

"How you gonna say you're not black when I look at your daddy and he look like one of my uncles who worked for the city of Detroit?" ranted Love on 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!). Yeah, you tell him, girlfriend!

Why Was the Tiger Woods Speech Treated Like a Presidential Address?

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 19th 2010 12:41PM
Tiger Woods speechIf you're looking for analysis of the Great Tiger Woods Apology of 2010, you've come to the wrong place. Our friends at TMZ, PopEater, and Fanhouse will have it all broken down from a personality, gossip, and sports perspective. No, what I'm here to talk about is the TV aspect of the coverage, and all I have to say about it is... it's troubling.

Why? Think about what happened this morning: all four networks interrupted their regular programming to show the speech. There was pre- and post-speech analysis from sports reporters as well as the news folks. There was a podium and a blue curtain. If you didn't know that Tiger Woods was about to speak, you might have thought that President Obama was about to step out and address the nation. Instead, we got Tiger talking over and over about how he's failed himself, his wife, his friends and his family.

I'm not sure what made me feel dirtier: the fact that the networks made it seem like a presidential address, or that I was actually watching it. Video and more after the jump.

During today's press conference, pro golfer Tiger Woods issued a prepared public statement in which he apologized for committing adultery, and said that wife Elin Nordegren never struck him the night of his car crash on Thanksgiving. He also praised Nordegren for her "grace and poise" throughout the scandal.

"I want to say to each of you simply and directly, I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in," Woods said. "I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable and I am the only person to blame."

Eddie Griffin offered advice on 'Good Day LA' (weekdays, 9AM ET on Fox) to Tiger Woods, who is expected to speak on his infidelity scandal at a press conference scheduled for Feb. 19. Griffin suggested that the embattled pro golfer be unapologetic ... sort of.

"I would tell him to say, 'It's none of your business, and I hope you enjoy me playing golf, because that's what I actually do. Of course, I am an athlete and I have a lot of extra testosterone,'" Griffin said.

SpikeTV's 'Back Nine' to Feature Sex Addict Named ... Tiger

by Scott Harris, posted Feb 18th 2010 10:45AM
Since his headline-grabbing tabloid sex scandal rocked the golf world last year, Tiger Woods has been at the center of a media firestorm, with questions about his marital infidelity dogging his every step. Now, as he prepares to face the press for the first time tomorrow, questions are surfacing from an unlikely source: SpikeTV.

That's because, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the testosterone-fueled network has given the green light to 'Back Nine,' a new pilot revolving around the antics of a washed-up former golf champion who tours the country trying to work his way back into the big time. It's not the main character raising eyebrows, though, but rather his sidekick, a "sex-addicted longtime caddy" who happens to be named Tiger.

Rosie O'Donnell Compares Tiger Woods to Michael Jackson (VIDEO)

Rosie O'Donnell compares Tiger Woods to Michael Jackson on GMAIs Tiger Woods like Michael Jackson? He is if you're Rosie O'Donnell.

During an interview on 'Good Morning America,' O'Donnell compared the two superstars, saying that she feels sorry for what Woods is going through with his sex scandal, and is probably one of the only women who does.

"I think that everybody has demons, and sexuality in this country is kind of seen in a paradigm that is unrealistic," she said. "It's a difficult thing to be the most famous guy in the world and the most famous golfer." Agree or disagree?

Mel Gibson Discusses the Price of Fame and Tiger Woods (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 25th 2010 4:30PM
In an interview with Cameron Mathison on 'Good Morning America,' actor Mel Gibson talked about the price of fame and defended embattled pro golfer Tiger Woods.

According to Gibson, he first realized that fame had changed his life forever when he was a young actor in his 20s and a group of fans refused to stop following him. "I said, 'Hey, stop following me around.' And they went, 'No,'" Gibson said. "And I knew that I'd lost something. I knew that I had lost personal anonymity."

Best TV of the '00s: Scandals

by Mike Moody, posted Dec 29th 2009 2:00PM
grey's anatomy scandalMore of our best of the decade coverage, which started earlier today. You can read the other posts at the link above. Here, we talk about the decade's biggest TV scandals.

Who doesn't like a little drama? We love it here at TV Squad. Of course, its usually the scripted kind that we obsess over, not the real-life variety. But it was hard to escape all of the behind-the-scenes scandals going on during the Aughts.

The backstage drama often spilled out onto the tube, in talk show interviews, reality series, and with the 24-hour news networks looking to fill time and boost their ratings. Needless to say, we had little trouble picking our top TV scandals of the '00s.

Past Tiger Woods Interviews Take on Whole New Meaning (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Dec 29th 2009 11:04AM
In light of Tiger Woods' admitted infidelity, and claims by at least 14 separate women that they had affairs with him, past interviews in which the pro golfer espoused the virtue of honesty and gushed over his relationship with wife Elin Nordegren take on a whole new ironic meaning.

"Always being honest with yourself at all times can be brutal ... It's nice to be able to go home and just be with somebody. You have your bad days. You have your good days. But we're a team. We're in this together," Woods said of Nordegren during an interview with 'Extra.'

Best and Worst TV of 2009: Joel's list

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 19th 2009 2:04PM
Breaking Bad
I don't think I did one of these lists last year, and I have no idea why. The election all by itself would have generated a pretty fun best/worst list. Maybe we were all suffering from information overload, and were just exhausted. Not sure.

But 2009 had a lot of interesting TV, too, just not all in one category. As I've done in the past, I'll dispense with the usual "best show" and "worst show" lists and just make up categories:

GOODNESS

Best comeback from a shaky first season: Parks and Recreation. As I mentioned in my "return of the sitcom" story, Parks and Rec has made the biggest improvement from first season to second since... well, since The Office. It's no coincidence; Greg Daniels and Mike Schur's Office experience taught them that patience would be rewarded, both on the part of the writers and the viewers.

Brian Williams on Tiger coverage, his funny self, and what's on his iPod

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 17th 2009 2:03PM
Brian WilliamsWhen NBC was promoting Brian Williams' fifth anniversary as anchor of the NBC Nightly News, I figured it was a good opportunity to ask him a few questions. After all, with two wars, a lousy economy, the health care debate, and Tiger Woods, there's lots of news going on right now.

And, in such a relatively short period of time, the news landscape has changed on both the broadcast and the cable fronts, including the fact that on Monday, when Diane Sawyer takes over ABC's World News, he'll be the only male evening news anchor left.

Williams (or as he's been called lately, BriWi) was nice enough to answer some questions via e-mail about his new competition and how he lets his famous sense of humor come through during a serious newscast. Finally, he gives me some insight into what he's listening to right now (if you've seen previous interviews with him, he leans more towards the college radio side).
