by Aimee Deeken, posted Feb 3rd 2011 5:40AM
Stressed Mom on 'Toddlers and Tiaras'Taralyn is ready for the beauty round of the pageant: She's got on her wig, layers of tulle, loads of stage makeup, etc, etc. But her mother is tense. "Calm down, Mommy," she tells her.

"After Beauty, I think we can relax, because Beauty is the most important event," she explains on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC). Her main concern is Taralyn's "flipper" -- fake teeth. "Your natural smile is leaving ... You're not giggling, there's no spark, there's nothing! It's just a flipper, and that's all I see."

Alexis Gets an Eyebrow Wax on 'Toddlers and Tiaras'"She's just gonna look at [your eyebrows]," Nicole tells her 5-year-old daughter as she sits in a salon. Not true. Alexis is there for an eyebrow wax, and the candy she'll get at the end sways her only temporarily. Alexis starts screaming.

"She had a bad experience," explains Nicole on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC). "The wax was way too hot, and it actually ripped off her skin, so she's been kinda terrified ever since then." Big surprise.

'Toddlers & Tiaras' Contestant Performs as Lady Gaga (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Jan 6th 2011 7:20AM
Ava's Lady Gaga on 'Toddlers & Tiaras'On 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC), we've seen various diminutive contestants dress in tight leather and heels (as 'Grease's' Sandra Dee), impersonate Michael Jackson with crotch-grabbing gyrations and don Madonna's cone boobs. It only makes sense that a little Lady Gaga would appear.

Ava, a 3-year-old in a platinum wig, begins her routine by jumping out from a box that says "Lady Gaga" -- in case anyone couldn't figure that out. Her father stands in the front row of the audience, gesturing her through all the choreography. "I still have to give her some cues," he explains.

"It's like back then when everybody wanted to impersonate Madonna. But I don't think I would put her in any costume that Madonna ever came out in," he says.

The Littlest Diva on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (VIDEO)

The Littlest Diva on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' It's all happening. Yes, it's the season premiere of 'Toddlers & Tiaras'! The series has only been gone for a few months -- but still, there's been a 'Toddlers & Tiaras'-shaped hole in our lives. We've missed it all so much! Overbearing parents forcing little kids to go onstage! Creepy makeup! Hairspray! Temper tantrums! ... Good times, good times.

On the new episode (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC), we're reunited with Makenzie, a returning toddler from last season. Last time around, Makenzie behaved very badly. And this time around ... she's behaving very very badly. Makenzie is only 4 years old, but she's already a "diva."

While preparing for the Miss Arizona Gold Coast Beauty Pageant -- a very important pageant that only the people on this show have ever heard of -- Makenzie starts yelling and pouting and crying. She wants her "Ni-Ni"! Her Ni-Ni! Her Ni-Ni!

Jeez, okay, fine! But wait. ... What is a "Ni-Ni," anyway?

Creepy Child Contortionist on 'Toddlers & Tiaras'Time for more disturbing footage from 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC). But this time you won't see any temper tantrums from young contestants who aren't nearly as enthusiastic about the beauty pageant proceedings as their moms.

Meet Kaylee, age 10, who seems very happy to be there and show off her talent: contorting her body into painful-looking positions with incredible (and creepy) flexibility.

"The audience were going nuts for me," says Kaylee after her performance. "They thought like, 'Wow, what is she doing? Wow ... that's gross.'"

Eyebrow Waxing on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (VIDEO)

Eyebrow Waxing on 'Toddlers & Tiaras'It isn't just the makeup and hair extensions that make a child prepped for pageantry, as 10-year-old Brooklyn showed us on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC).

"We just recently started getting her eyebrows waxed because when they razor 'em it hurts a little bit," her mother Brandy explained. "So just [a] quick hurt and be done."

"That's burning!" Brooklyn said when the hot wax was applied. "Don't try this at home."

She didn't make a peep when the strips were yanked off her face. Brandy approved: "It's amazing when you get all that hair off your face what you look like."

Toddler Forced to Participate in Pageant, Told 'Beauty Is Pain' (VIDEO)

Toddler Forced to Participate in Pageant, Told 'Beauty Is Pain'Little Teeghan is initially "pumped" (says her mother) about the beauty pageant on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC). After seeing the stage decorations, the toddler says, "Big crown I'm gonna win for my momma." All systems go, it seems.

But during hair and makeup, Teeghan remembers what she hates about pageants: hair and makeup.

The toddler screams that the (ginormous) hair extensions are "killing me!" The hairstylist tells her, "Just remember one little thing: Beauty is pain."

Teeghan's mother explains it this way: "You can't go on stage without the hair. You can't go on stage without the eyelashes. Those are not Teeghan's favorite things to put on. But, it's sort of too bad."

Disturbing Madonna Costume on 'Toddlers & Tiaras'What is more disturbing than little kids in beauty pageants? Dressing them up like "Living Dolls," as seen on 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC). And what's the most troubling thing about that portion of the contest?

Not Kylie, who is "Sandra Dee" from 'Grease,' though she's decked out in skin-tight black leather and red heels.

Not Tamia, who, as Michael Jackson, grabs her crotch with a gloved hand and gyrates for the adoring audience.

It's little Mia, who appears in a Madonna costume -- cone boobs and all.

Frightening Fall During 'Toddlers & Tiaras' Talent Performance (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Jun 24th 2010 7:50AM
Bad Fall on 'Toddlers & Tiaras'Reason no. 702 not to enlist your child in the pageant circuit: the high probability of a humiliating injury during the talent portion of pageant shows. One episode of 'Toddlers & Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC) provided the evidence.

The talent competition of "America's Best Pageant" comprised a lot of singing and dancing. One such little tyke wearing double denim showed off a few of his funky dance moves. But while scooting backwards, he tripped on stage decorations lining the edge and plummeted off the back of the platform and out of sight behind the backdrop.

While the audience waited to hear if he was okay, one mom said, "That was a cool dance move though." Um, right. Because that is what's important.

Pageant Director Steals Winnings on 'Toddlers and Tiaras'Scandal on 'Toddlers and Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC)! Makeup artist Mykel Baca explained it quite simply, saying, "The director skipped out on the pageant and left ... in the middle of crowning."

Instead of awarding winners for each category, she handed out IOUs and said prize money would be sent to them in two weeks.

"There is a snowball's chance [in hell] that those IOUs will ever be made good upon," said one angry mom. "If I had to guess, the director ... collected between $15-20,000 in entrance fees."

Meet the Male 'Pageant Diva' on 'Toddlers and Tiaras' (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 10th 2010 10:05AM
Toddlers & TiarasLadies and gentlemen, meet Zander the self-described pageant diva on 'Toddlers and Tiaras' (Wed., 10PM ET on TLC).

Zander, a 5-year-old boy, has won numerous competitions and been in 60 pageants. He even scares young female competitors off from the pageants. Zander wears lip gloss and says he doesn't like to lose because his mom might get sad. Tracy, Zander's mom, is proud of her "pageant king" son, and she should be.

"A lot of people are wondering why boys are in pageants, they think he's going to be on the wrong side of the fence," Tracy said. "I'm so not concerned."

Good for you, Tracy! Wait. You are concerned? Oh, Tracy.

toddlers tiaras tlcPrepare yourself for more pound-cake makeup, orange spray tans, fake hair and, oh yes, fake teeth, because TLC has renewed 'Toddlers and Tiaras' for a third season.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the unscripted reality series will return on June 2, though no word yet on how many episodes were ordered.

The show, which follows young girls as they compete in various beauty pageants, is a big ratings hit for TLC. Last summer's July premiere, for example, earned the show its highest ratings up until that point.

Meanwhile, there's more good news to report for TLC fans: The Hollywood Reporter also notes that 'Hoarders: Buried Alive,' about people who can't seem to get rid of anything from their house, will return for a second season, beginning Sundays this fall.
