Oprah, Martha make Fortune's 'Most Powerful' list
by Anna Johns, posted Oct 3rd 2006 10:38AM
On Fortune magazine's annual ranking of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business, Oprah comes in at number 8 (Rich mentioned this, too) and Martha Stewart at number 28. Fortune included Oprah because of her vast empire, including a new satellite radio channel called Oprah & Friends. She was bumped down from number 4 on last year's list. Number one this year is Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo. I'm not sure how they rank the women, but I think if Oprah told everyone to stop drinking Pepsi, Indra would be in trouble. And, while Martha's stock is flat and her version of The Apprentice failed, she makes the list because of her big-time partnerships with KB Home, Macy's and Kodak... plus she still has a very successful publishing business.
