You stay classy, Torino

little lost robot torinoOne of the cameramen from the NBC affiliate in Greenville, South Carolina is blogging behind-the-scenes of the Olympics. It's actually a neat little window into the way NBC works for its local affiliates. Yesterday, JL (AKA Little Lost Robot) spent most of the day running the camera for back-to-back live shots with the NBC Newschannel reporter who does live reports for affiliates across the U.S. every five minutes. He says the same lead-in and on camera tag for the same video package every for four hours straight. Nuts! JL even tried to mess with the guy (scroll down to the bottom of the page to see what he did).

While in Torino, JL has also blogged about some celebrity sightings of Brian Williams and Italian sports hero Alberto Tomba. He's an entertaining writer who takes some pretty candid (and funny) photos, so I would highly recommend bookmarking his website for the duration of the Olympics.

NBC plans 416 hours of Olympics coverage

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 11th 2006 8:26AM
That's 17.3 days of Olympics coverage, people. And most of it is going to be focused on figure skating. The Olympics run for 17 days (from February 10-26), but NBC will not be playing the events around-the-clock. Instead, it will spread its coverage out during daytime, primetime, and late night viewing hours on six stations: NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC HD, and Universal HD. In comparison, NBC had 375.5 hours of coverage during the Salt Lake City winter games four years ago.

Bob Costas will return as primetime host for the winter games, his seventh year with NBC Sports. And, to feed the needs of all those ice skating fans, Dick Buttons will host Olympic Ice, a daily report on the games' most popular sport. NBC is also prominently featuring David Pelletier and Jamie Sale in their coverage. The Canadian couple, who just got married, were a crowd favorite in 2002 when they ended up tying for gold with the Russian pairs skaters.

Olympians have a mini-movie on NBC

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 7th 2006 8:30AM
I am a total sucker for the Olympics, but I really hate all the cheesy, promotional crap that goes with it. This time around, NBC and Chevrolet are teaming up to feature some camera-friendly Olympians in their very own mini-movie. Oh, joy. It airs during Las Vegas on NBC in February and it'll also be included with advertisements before the trailers start at AMC, Cinemark, Regal, UA and Edwards movie theaters. Now, I clearly remember the little mini-movie that Chevrolet did during the last summer Olympics where a bunch of athletes call each other and drive their own Chevrolets to Athens (way to carpool, guys). I wanted to throw something at the movie screen everytime I saw it. Why? As a general rule, athletes can't act. You hear that, advertising geniuses? Athletes. Cannot. Act. This time around, the lucky Olympians are halfpipe snowboarders Kelly Clark and Ross Powers, alpine skiers Eric Schlopy, Ted Ligety, and Julia Mancuso, freestyle skier Toby Dawson and snowboarder Seth Wescott. They're all somehow paired up with the cast of Las Vegas and then whisked off to Torino, Italy for the competition. There will also be a behind-the-scenes mini-mini-movie of the mini-movie on NBC's website.
