'South Park' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for April 26, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Apr 26th 2011 5:00PM
south park 14Yes, many people are still watching 'South Park' 14 seasons after its Comedy Central debut. Should you still be watching 'South Park'? Depends.

Do you like to laugh until your sides hurt and your eyes tear up? Does cheering on an aging but still sharp franchise that somehow manages to stay relevant sound appealing to you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should probably pick up a copy of 'South Park' The Complete Fourteenth Season on Blu-ray or DVD today.

The show might be a bit past its prime, but it still takes more risks and delivers more jokes per episode than anything else on TV. Season 14's targets include Facebook, NASCAR and, most famously, the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

'Glee: Encore' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for April 19, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Apr 19th 2011 3:00PM
Glee Encore blu-rayWhy on Earth would Fox release a DVD featuring the "most sensational" musical numbers from 'Glee''s first season and none of the other scenes -- you know, the ones with actual dialogue and jokes about hepatitis and waterboarding? Lots of reasons actually.

'Glee: Encore,' released today on DVD and Blu-ray, will appeal to parents wanting to share their favorite 'Glee' musical performances with their little Gleeks-in-training (or force them down their throats) without worrying about exposing them to the show's more mature content. This set is also perfect for viewers who want to cut straight to Finn and crew belting out 'Don't Stop Believen' and 'Jessie's Girl' and avoid fast-forwarding through all the relationship drama and slushie tossing.

The barebones single-disc package offers 34 musical bits from the series' debut season, including memorable sequences like Sue Sylvester's 'Vogue,' Mercedes' rockin' version of Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful,' and Kurt's winning rendition of 'Rose's Turn.' (Sorry, no 'Over the Rainbow' or 'Poker Face.)

'H.R. Pufnstuf' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for April 12, 2011

Vivendi EntertainmentWhat is it about kids' shows? They're the trippiest things on TV. Remember that ghastly Baby Sun from 'The Teletubbies'? That was weird, but nothing compares to 'H.R. Pufnstuf,' the show that made America wonder, "What they hell were they smoking when they made this!? And where in San Francisco can I get some?"

Sid and Marty Krofft's first live-action, giant puppet series premiered in 1969 and held the nation's children in its colorful, hallucinogenic grip for three seasons as part of NBC's Saturday morning lineup. Now you can relive the long, strange trip with 'H.R. Pufnstuf' The Complete Series and Collector's Edition, released today on DVD.

The three-disc package is pretty much a re-release of the Complete Series box that came out a few years ago, but the newer set features an H.R. Pufnstuf Bobblehead plus a rare episode of the 'Pufnstuf' spinoff 'Horror Hotel.' It's a must-buy for Krofft completists (and perhaps a fun gift for the 'Mr. Show' fan in your life).

'Friday Night Lights' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for April 5, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Apr 5th 2011 2:30PM
friday night lights season 5 dvdIn a way, it's a good thing that 'Friday Night Lights' is now over. The entire series can now be viewed as a complete masterwork on DVD, with the fifth and final season hitting stores today.

The fantastic drama about a small Texas town has languished in the ratings. Despite endless praise from critics and devoted fans, a public enraptured by reality TV and forensic science neglected the show, relegating the Dylan Panthers and their cheering section to the bottom of the Nielsen charts. But, somehow, the TV gods allowed 'FNL' to continue spinning its inspiring, captivating and ultimately heroic tale for five seasons.

In the end, some characters moved on, some stayed put, and showrunner Jason Katims smartly shined the spotlight on the series' star players, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.

The Season 5 DVD features final-episode commentary from Katims as well as a tearjerker featurette about the show's five-season run. Buy it!

'Mad Men' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for March 29, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 29th 2011 1:20PM
Mad Men season 4 blu-rayDon Draper took a bold stab at building a new life during 'Mad Men' season 4, available today on DVD and Blu-ray. Season 4 followed Don, Peggy, Roger and the rest of the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce clan as they experienced small successes, bitter failures and, of course, tragedies in their relationships and business ventures.

Season 4 almost felt like a fresh start for the Emmy-winning series, as Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce began to take off, and Don, now divorced from Betty, stumbled in his new role as a single father and authority figure. One of the great joys of season 4 was watching Don and Peggy work together more than ever and seeing their relationship evolve from the boss/secretary dynamic to a more rewarding teacher/student scenario.

Roger and Joan's drama seemed never-ending, and Don almost fell off the deep end (again) in a whirlwind season that ended with a huge question mark hovering over every major character's head. Here's hoping AMC and Matthew Weiner settle that reported contract dispute already and start production on the much-anticipated fifth season.

'ReBoot' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for March 1, 2011

reboot shout factory dvdBefore 'The Matrix,' there was 'ReBoot.' OK, maybe that's taking it a little too far, but it's hard not to overstate the importance and influence of 'ReBoot' -- it was the first fully computer-generated animated TV series, after all.

The sci-fi adventure series, which aired on Saturday mornings in the U.S. in the mid 1990s, stood out not only because of its highly stylized (but admittedly clunky by today's standards) computer-generated visuals, but also for its ambitious serial storytelling and its sly take on the world's growing obsession with technology and video games.

Shout! Factory has released Seasons 1 and 2, packaged together, today as well as the nine-disc 'Definitive Mainframe Edition,' which features a 20-page booklet, making of doc, and episode commentary from the series creators. Shiver me templates!

Also new on DVD and Blu-ray today are the 14th and 15th seasons of 'Top Gear,' the hit BBC series about all things auto. Nab both seasons and put a smile on your favorite motorhead's face.

'Project Runway' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Feb. 8, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Feb 8th 2011 2:50PM
The Weinstein CompanyAfter jumping from Bravo to Lifetime for season 7, and the cancellation of the vapid spinoff 'Models of the Runway,' 'Project Runway' took a risk and expanded its format for season 8.

Episodes were stretched to the extra-fabulous running time of 90 minutes, and 17 contestants were chosen (one more than usual).

'The Complete Eighth Season,' released today on DVD, kicked off with the show's shortest challenge ever -- the aspiring designers only had five hours to make it work -- as Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum and returning judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors presided over a season full of bitchy bickering, stressful challenges, big upsets and a few stunning collections.

A few celebrity guest judges, including Selma Blair, Betsey Johnson, Kristen Bell and January Jones, arrived to help separate the hot messes from the future runway stars.

the cosby showThe impact of 'The Cosby Show' on TV, our lives ... heck, the universe cannot be overstated.

Bill Cosby and crew revived the American sitcom, established the template for the modern half-hour family comedy, and remained at the top of the ratings for almost eight years. The classic show, which ran from 1984 to 1992, is a rerun staple, but you can now stream any episode you want, when you want, with all eight seasons available on Netflix Watch Instantly.

'The Sarah Jane Adventures' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Jan. 4, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Jan 4th 2011 1:30PM
sarah jane adventures season 3 dvdFor most of The Doctor's companions, flying around in the TARDIS and battling Daleks and Cybermen is the most dangerous and exciting time of their lives. But not for Sarah Jane Smith; her life only got crazier after parting ways with The Doctor. Now she's forging her own strange sci-fi tinged path in the BBC's 'Doctor Who' spinoff 'The Sarah Jane Adventures.'

Essentially pitched as 'Doctor Who for Kids,' 'Sarah Jane,' created by former 'New Who' mastermind Russell T. Davies, has won over critics and audiences of all ages with imaginative storytelling, humor and an assured lead performance from Elisabeth Sladen.

Season 3 of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures,' on DVD today, finds Sarah Jane and crew teaming up with new alien friends and going on some memorable timey wimey trips of their own.

Despite some sketchy-looking visual and make-up effects here and there -- the result of a reportedly slashed budget -- season 3 of 'Sarah Jane' offers six episodes of witty and fun fantasy/sci-fi that, like 'Doctor Who,' isn't afraid to get a little dark and challenging every now and then.

Three More Shows You'll Never See On DVD

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 28th 2010 5:10PM
Spy GameBack in 2006 I did a post that highlighted the five shows you'll never, ever, ever see on DVD. It's a tricky post to do, because so many shows are being released on DVD now, even ones you thought you'd never see ('Brisco County,' 'Stingray'), but I'm proud to say my picks have held up these past four years. Though I'd still love to see those show on the shiny round discs.

Here are three more. Let's see how I do in another four years.

1. 'Spy Game.' A goofy but well-crafted action show that ran for about a dozen episodes on ABC in 1997. It starred Allison Smith ('Kate & Allie' and 'The West Wing') and Linden Ashby ('Melrose Place' and 'Mortal Kombat') as a spy team battling bad guys. It never took itself seriously and was often ridiculous, but always fun.

New TV on DVD for March 30: 'Deadliest Catch,' 'Real Housewives'

by Scott Harris, posted Mar 30th 2010 1:45PM
If there's one thing the American television viewer has learned about the entertainment industry it's that Hollywood's primary goal is to always keep it real. Sure, you could accuse actors of employing some artifice in their line of work, but for the most part, television is in the midst of an unparalleled era of keeping it real as shows like 'The Real World' and 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' continue to prove by having the word real right in the title. And when it comes to TV on DVD, the realest month of all is apparently March.

Of course, the argument could be made that this week's batch of DVD releases is actually somewhat weak due to a lack of high profile scripted shows, but we like to take more of a "glass half real" viewpoint on things. That's why were so so excited to see the latest issue from the most real reality show of all, 'Deadliest Catch,' which lands 'Deadliest Catch: Season Five' just in time to get you ready for the premiere of season six on April 13.

'Max Headroom' Coming to DVD

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 1st 2010 3:02PM
max headroom dvdThe '80s resurgence continues with the pending DVD release of 'Max Headroom', one of the most ambitious and baffling sci-fi shows to ever hit the small screen.

Too young to remember Matt Frewer's babbling blonde digital hipster? Allow me to play professor: In the mid-'80s, Frewer (you know, that guy) played a strange, spastic (and sarcastic) computer-animated Coca Cola pitchman and music video host that lived inside of your TV. He frightened young children and hypnotized susceptible nerds into guzzling Coke by the gallon.

Perhaps as a meta-comment on his own existence, his creators produced an insane cyberpunk TV movie starring Max that satirized TV marketing, the media, politics, and everything else worth satirizing.

'Daria' Is Finally Coming to DVD, Hurray!

by Adam Keleman, posted Feb 9th 2010 4:00PM
With her patented cynical one-liners and black, round-shaped glasses, Daria Morgendorffer of MTV's cult animated show 'Daria' was the prototypical, overly smart teenage outsider.

On air for a total of five seasons from 1997-2001, 'Daria,' a program that lifted the veil of high school phoniness, provided a niche for all the sarcasm-spewing teens out there.

So we're quite delighted with the news that our favorite irony-loving teenager will soon be coming to DVD
