TV on DVD: Week of June 23

by Janine LoGelfo, posted Jun 23rd 2009 6:00AM
Here are the highlights of this week's DVD releases. Enjoy!

'The Girls Next Door' (Season 5)

What the Season's About: This season chronicles the lead-up to the buxom blonde trio's flight from the Playboy coop. While we now know that Kendra and Bridget landed their own series, we will always remember their time in the mansion -- even if Hef doesn't.

Why You Should Check It Out: It's the last season that features Bridget, Holly and Kendra as Hef's girlfriends. While there is a season 6 in the works with all new Hef gal pals, the chemistry between these three will be hard to match.

Super-mega-uber-exclusive! The State DVD set for release this summer! Maybe...

by Danny Gallagher, posted Apr 5th 2009 10:01AM
MTV's The StateNothing has frustrated TV fans more than the never-ending release of The State DVD from MTV. It has become the Duke Nukem Forever of the television universe.

One minute, it's on and the next minute, it's off. Then it's back on again, then the whole thing gets called off. Then it rises from the ashes like a flaming phoenix into the never-ending sky only to get doused with a fire extinguisher by an MTV Home Entertainment executive.

Now it appears that ill-fated collection of magic discs is coming soon to a DVD store near you until MTV decides it's time to destroy your dreams and tell your children there is no Santa Claus again.

Hey MTV, I want The State on DVD already

by Mike Moody, posted Feb 5th 2009 5:02PM
the state mtvIf you grew up watching MTV in the '90s, then you probably remember The State. If you don't – and you're an American between the age of 30 and 35 – do a YouTube search for "I wanna dip my balls in it" and let the memories flood right on back.

I credit the irreverent MTV sketch comedy show with keeping me from slipping into a full-blown depression during my teenage years, aka the angsty, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains-drenched years. The State ran from 1993 to 1995 and helped launch the careers of some of my favorite comic actors, writers and filmmakers, including David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models), Thomas Lennon (Reno 911, Balls of Fury) and Michael Ian Black (Stella, Ed). All 11 members of the comedy troupe reunited recently to perform new material at SF Sketchfest in January. The A.V. Club talked to State alums Wain, Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver this week about the reunion and about their future plans. Among the things that came up in the interview was the status of that promised complete-series DVD.

On the 10th day of Festivus, TV gave to me ...

Mad Men lighter DVD case... Ten shows on DVD

Since there are twelve shows a-stinkin' on TV this year (well, that's the low estimate), you might be glad to hear that 2008 brought us some spectacular TV on DVD. You knew there had to be a bright spot, right?

Whether you want to re-watch your favorite classic shows from the '50s or '60s (or earlier), or catch up on one of the hottest shows on current TV (yeah, there are a few) by starting with the first season, they've been released on DVD in 2008. It was actually hard to pick just ten, but for better or for worse, here are my picks:

All I want for Christmas is 50 hours with The Real Ghostbusters - VIDEO

by Mike Moody, posted Nov 26th 2008 12:05PM
the real ghostbustersFinally. Time Life has released the long-awaited The Real Ghostbusters: The Complete Collection on DVD. And it's frackin' loaded. The mammoth $179.99 set features all 147 eps of The Real Ghostbusters, plus more than twelve hours of extras, all packed in a box with hologram panels that resembles the firehouse from the show. Looks like I'm gonna have to sell my car. For $179.99.

I won't go on about how this animated spinoff of the Ghostbusters movie was the best thing on Saturday morning in the late 80s and early 90s (but it was), or how it was also the coolest thing to watch in syndication after school every day (but it was), or how Egon Spengler helped me overcome my own personal boogeyman (but he did). I also won't waste your time writing about the awesome Real Ghostbusters-inspired comics I used to create as a kid (but they were awesome), or how I still reference my favorite eps with my friends in casual conversation (but I do).

But I will ask you, dear TV Squad reader, to help make my Christmas wish come true by persuading my wife to buy me this box set. Because I really don't want to sell my car for $179.99.
