Tyler Perry Getting a TV Network?

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 10th 2011 11:22AM
Tyler PerryComing soon to your TV: A whole network dedicated to Tyler Perry. Yes, one different than TBS.

According to the New York Times, Lionsgate and Perry are forming Tyler TV, a network dedicated to Perry's projects, including TV shows and movies. The plan for Tyler TV is to make the network home to reruns of Perry's sitcoms and movies. Third-party content that "meshes with Mr. Perry's Christianity-tinged brand" will also be purchased.

Perry's sitcoms on TBS include 'House of Payne,' 'Meet the Browns' and the newest, 'For Better or For Worse.' Both 'Payne' and 'Browns' started off strong for TBS, pulling in more than 5 million and 4 million viewers, respectively. Their numbers have dropped, but continue to be some of TBS's top-rated programs.

'Payne' was recently canceled.

Tyler Perry's Pilot License Helped Conquer Fear of Flying (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Nov 2nd 2010 10:00AM
Tyler Perry Talks Fear of Flying on 'Late Late'Craig Ferguson and Tyler Perry both tackled a fear of flying with more flying -- specifically, learning to fly airplanes themselves.

"I started with the [radio-controlled] planes, and I realized that ... the wind's bouncing [and] throwing them around but they don't fall out of the sky," Perry explained on 'The Late Late Show' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS). "So that let me understand turbulence."

"Was it turbulence that bothered you?" asked Ferguson.
"It was crashing that bothered me," he deadpanned.

Now each has a private pilot's license. But Ferguson admitted it can still be a slightly unnerving experience. Perry suggested the host bring his trusty harmonica and snake mug with him on flights. Ferguson grabbed the mug and began playing a harmonica tune, but realized that wouldn't "inspire confidence in your passengers."

Tyler Perry Explains How 'For Colored Girls,' His Latest Film, Chose Him (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 22nd 2010 2:05PM
Tyler Perry, 'The View'According to Tyler Perry, he didn't choose his first R-rated film as a director. Instead, the film wound up choosing him. As he explained it to the women of 'The View' (Weekdays, Syndicated on ABC), their own Whoopi Goldberg, who is also one of the film's stars, was the first to bring it to his attention, but he turned down involvement in the play's production.

Later, when it was being developed as a film he was approached again, and again he rejected it, but when it came back a third time, "I had to face my fears and just jump into it," he explained.

The film is 'For Colored Girls,' and is based on the 1975 play 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf' by Ntozake Shange. The play was structured as a series of connected poems and didn't back down from such harsh and controversial subject matter as rape, abortion and domestic violence.

Tyler Perry Opens Up About Childhood Abuse on 'Oprah' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 21st 2010 3:38PM
Tyler Perry, 'The Oprah Winfrey Show'Warning: This clip contains graphic descriptions of physical and sexual abuse.

Celebrities often open up on 'Oprah Winfrey' (Weekdays, syndicated) in ways more intimate than they would anywhere else. Winfrey's good friend Tyler Perry was on Wednesday, and spoke candidly about the horrors of his childhood, from physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his father to sexual abuse at the hands of multiple neighbors.

It's a tragic story of despair that began when he was five or six years old and was still happening into his tenth year. While Perry's deep devotion to religion is well known now, even his faith betrayed him in his youth. He said the man he opened up to in the church "used God and the Bible against me, you know, to justify a lot of the things that were going on."

Janet Jackson Discusses Getting Naked for 'Rolling Stone' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 18th 2010 10:55PM
Janet Jackson Discusses Getting Naked for 'Rolling Stone'Singer and actress Janet Jackson was the guest on 'The Graham Norton Show' (Sat., 10PM ET on BBC America). While on the show, she discussed her famously controversial cover shoot for 'Rolling Stone' magazine. On that cover, Janet appeared naked from the waist up, with her jeans unzipped, and with a man's hands cupped around her breasts. (In case you need a quick, um, refresher as to what that looked like, the image is right here.)

Host Graham Norton asked if Janet knew the man who was grabbing her breasts, or if it was "some really lucky photographer's assistant." Another boobs-related question: Did the man have good enough manners to warm up his hands before grabbing her?

Janet Jackson on Coping With Michael's Death (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 22nd 2010 1:00PM
Michael Jackson died while sister Janet was filming Tyler Perry's upcoming movie 'Why Did I Get Married Too?' And, according to Janet, she channeled her grief over his death into her performance, and found comfort from Perry during this upsetting time, she said on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

In Perry's movie, Janet plays a successful psychologist whose marriage begins to unravel. Her portrayal, she said, was fueled in no small part by the traumatic news of her brother's passing.

What to Watch: December 7 - 13

by Stephanie Earp, posted Dec 7th 2009 3:14AM

Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009 - Wednesday December 9, 10 pm, Global/ABC

Babs' annual love-in raises the bar a little this year - or is it just that 2009 was a really bizarre year? The short list includes four people I would confidently call lunatics (though some use their crazy for good and others for evil) including Sarah Palin, Adam Lambert, Kate Gosselin and Lady Gaga. Tyler Perry is also on the list and I can't wait to see how Walters handles him. Tyler, if you are reading this, I beg you to do the interview in Madea drag. Brett Favre and Glenn Beck from the world of sports round out the published list. The top three fascinators will be revealed during the broadcast. Who wants to do a pool? My picks are Robert Pattinson, Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

Tyler Perry's 'Meet the Browns' Headed to Syndication

by Michael D. Ayers, posted Nov 16th 2009 12:39PM
Meet the Browns'Meet the Browns' -- meet syndication.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the TBS sitcom -- which already has over 40 episodes under its belt -- will start airing on several of the major networks next fall, including Fox and CBS.

Meanwhile, Variety is also reporting that Fox stations in New York, Dallas, Houston and Washington, D.C. are confirmed, and a total of 70 percent of U.S. households will be meeting the 'Browns' in syndication.

The TV series stems from a play that Tyler Perry first debuted in 2004, which subsequently spawned a feature film. 'Browns' currently airs Wednesday nights at 10PM.

The move is somewhat unprecedented, considering the show (now in its third season) premiered in January. It also marks a rare occurrence, in which a cable series is making a jump to the major networks, and not the other way around.

Are We There Yet? coming to TBS, and bringing Terry Crews with it

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 15th 2009 5:04PM
Terry CrewsTBS started the 100-episode order with the Tyler Perry family of sitcoms. And now they're at it again with a similar offer on the table for a television adaptation of Ice Cube's film Are We There Yet? Even better, they've nabbed Everybody Hates Chris' Terry Crews to play Nick, the role Ice Cube played in the film and its sequel.

Crews was always the funniest character on Everybody Hates Chris, and seeing him as the fish out of water marrying into an instant family should give him plenty of opportunity for laughs. It's nice to see that shows featuring predominantly African American casts are still being developed somewhere since they've left network television completely now with the cancellation of The CW's comedies.

Breaking news - Oprah and Tyler Perry are crazy rich! - VIDEO

by Eliot Glazer, posted Mar 9th 2009 6:01PM
oprah tyler perry money cars rich mogul madea gayle kingBless Oprah Winfrey's soul for all the good work she does in the name of bettering humanity. She gets people to read, she gives poor kids scholarships, she reaches out to victims of environmental disaster, and, of course, there was that time she gave a new car to everyone in her audience. She's a money fairy out to save the world, and we applaud her for it.

But then there are times when Oprah's weird side comes out, when that unique connection she so strongly maintains with her audience - both in the studio and viewers at home - is broken in favor of reminders that, oh yeah, Planet Oprah might not be such a crazy notion. The lady probably uses $100 bills to clean her teeth. And, in case you'd forgotten, she and buddies Gayle King and Tyler Perry will remind you, as they did while palling around on Friday's show, on which Oprah retold a super-nauseating story about Perry giving her the most incredibly unnecessary gift a media mogul could ever not hope for.
