UHF Station Goes Up for Sale on eBay
by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 16th 2010 8:02PM
Did you always want to own your own TV station but never had the drive, the ambition or the rich gambling uncle to win one in a poker game for you? Now's your chance. WMKG Channel 38 of Western Michigan has put its airwaves up for sale to the highest bidder on eBay. The owner has put the station up for sale with an asking price of $550,000, but owner Bud Kelly has said he is willing to go lower if the price is right.
The still-analog network airs a series of live talk shows, church service broadcasts and a weekly live bingo show. But just think, under the right hands, you could transform it into a broadcasting powerhouse that can take on the majors with such imaginative hits as "Strip Solitaire," "Bowling for Burgers" and "Wheel of Fish" assuming you know a bowling alley owner, a chop-socky karate instructor and Billy Barty.
UPDATE: 3:27 a.m. - It seems that eBay has taken down the site for the station. That's eBay, crusher of dreams and destroyer of hope.
Weird Al Show coming to DVD in August
by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 26th 2006 11:54AM
Wow, I barely remember this show. I have a
vague recollection of it airing, but I don't think I ever saw an episode. Did it air in the early 90s? Late 90s? I'm
sure it must have included takeoffs on TV shows and music videos and other pop culture satire, but I don't remember a
thing about it.The entire series (13 episodes) will be available on August 15. No word yet on commentaries or other extras.
Happy Birthday, Emo
by Adam Finley, posted Feb 7th 2006 12:29PM
Emo Philips, one of my favorite comedians of all time, turns 50 today.
Emo has been doing stand-up since 1976, and while he's beloved by many, he's not a comedian who will meet his audience half way. His dutch boy haircut and high-pitched warble were enough to make you want to heave heavy objects at him when you first saw his act, but once you got over the initial annoyance you discovered why Jay Leno once referred to him as one of the best joke writers in the business. Emo took a very basic comedy styling, the one-liner, and put his own weird twist on it. He twitches and stumbles on stage, running his fingers through his hair nervously as he tosses out such lines as, "People come up to me and say, 'Emo, do people really come up to you?'"
