'The Talk': Vicki Lawrence's Mama Has the Solution to US Border Problems (VIDEO)
At 62 years old, Vicki Lawrence is closing in on the 65-year old character she first made famous on 'The Carol Burnett Show.' 'Mama's Family' would go on to run five seasons of its own, and as proven on 'The Talk' (Weekdays, Syndicated on CBS), it's a character she's still not gotten rid of.And somehow, 'Mama' Thelma Harper doesn't look like she's aged a day in the past 30+ years. But she's as opinionated and progressive as ever, proposing that the solution to the border patrol problems is to build senior citizen homes along it.
"Nobody sees more than a nosy old lady," she said as the audience erupted in roars of laughter.
Five Shows in the Tradition of 'The Carol Burnett Show'
Television legend Carol Burnett has been making the talk show circuit to promote her new book, a look back at her wonderful, classic variety show 'The Carol Burnett Show,' called "This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection." The book sounds like a must-read, especially if you grew up on the comedy, music and characters that Carol, Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner and Tim Conway brought to TV viewers every week. In fact, to this day, those characters are still hilarious. Last week, my sister and I recalled the Mrs. Wiggins sketch, with Tim Conway as Mr. Tudball. We both laughed at the memory.
Sadly, 'The Carol Burnett Show' today is like a relic from the past. It was in many ways the end of an era. Like Carol herself said in USA Today, the cost of those shows would be too much today. But when she was doing her show, CBS Television City was also producing 'The Sonny & Cher Show,' 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' and 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.' That was a lot of variety, something that's non-existent today .
Carol Burnett suing Fox over Family Guy
This isn't a very good day for companies under the Fox banner. First Zsa Zsa's husband, and now this.
Veteran comedienne Carol Burnett is suing Twentieth-Century Fox because they used her animated "charwoman" character (the cleaning lady with the mop and bucket from The Carol Burnett Show) in an April, 2006 episode without her permission. She's asking for $2 million.
I think I have to start taking law classes or something, if these celebrity lawsuits keep coming at this pace. I think I remember this episode. It showed the charwoman as the maid at a porn shop. If the show can be sued for pop culture references like this, the lawsuits will never end, since the show has about 20 of them in every episode, and some aren't too flattering.
