What is THE BEST show on television?
After this season's nominations, we all know that the Emmys are a load of crap. Now the television critics over at TV Week think they know what are the best shows on television. In a semi-annual poll, critics voted Lost and The Sopranos as their favorite shows. Grey's Anatomy ranks No. 3. They also voted Unan1mous and The War at Home as the worst shows on television. Battlestar Galactica moved up to No. 11 and Desperate Housewives fittingly dropped from No. 2 to No. 23.While I won't disagree on their picks for the worst programs, I do disagree on their choices for best television. This season's Lost wasn't so hot and The Sopranos seems tired. My hands-down favorite television program right now is The Office (tied for 19th among the critics). This season, I came to adore the characters. Everytime I hear the music for the opening credits, I can't help but bounce on the couch and clap my hands like a two-year-old.

Strangers with Candy: Jerri is Only Skin Deep
(S01E06)
Orlando (Jerri's Filipino friend): You should run for Homecoming queen, Jerri.
Jerri: What? Are you joking? I don't think I'm what boys consider a "traditional beauty."
Orlando: In my country you'd be a real queen.
Jerri: Yeah, well, that's because your country is ruled by monkeys.
Orlando: Jerri, that's an ugly thing to say.
Jerri: Jeez, why are you people so sensitive about your resemblance to monkeys? They're adorable!
This episode begins with a game of dodgeball and Jerri having to sit out the game because of uneven teams. Also, it seems her teammates would rather have a slow girl with two broken arms play with them rather than Jerri. Despite not actually playing, Jerri manages to get hit with the ball, prompting Yasmine, a popular girl, to remark that Jerri is probably used to balls smacking against her face.
FX looks to MySpace for new talent
FX is kicking off a contest to encourage viewers to come up with their own comedy sitcom pilot with the chance of having it air on the network. If you think you have what it takes, well, you're too late because the deadline is today. Yeah, I know, but I didn't learn of this until last night. On June 19, the top twenty entries will be chosen and shown on the contest's MySpace page, with the winner being shown during the second season premiere of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on June 29. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was actually picked up after its creators taped a pilot for just two hundred dollars. The winner will receive $50,000 from the network to turn their idea into a full-length show.

Sci-Fi takes its Pulse
Following close behind other networks who are starting to embrace this whole "broadband content" thing, the Sci-Fi Channel will be launching its own broadband venture, Pulse, in two days. Web surfers will be able to watch rebroadcast shows and movies, exclusive news, and web-only shows. Other online components will also include live psychic readings from Char Margolis, and producer David Eick's Battlestar Galactica vlog. Admittedly, I don't watch much Sc-Fi, but the channel has had a fairly solid presence on the Web from the beginning, so it's cool to see it finally taking this inevitable step. Pulse will launch on May 8.Watch The Apprentice and get paid
Well, maybe. Apparently the ratings for The Apprentice 5
haven't been that great, so NBC is trying to lure more viewers to the show with the possibility of a $10,000 prize each
week. Turning the show into a kind of American Idol experience, viewers will be able to participate in the show
and vote for who they think should be fired. So really, it'll be much more like real life. I remember when I was
eighteen and applied at McDonald's but the manager wouldn't hire me until he asked fifty complete strangers on the
street whether I should work there or not. It all makes perfect sense. Winners from all three time zones will be chosen
each week. You can learn more about the contest over on NBC's site. The contest kicks off April 24 and
will run to the end of the season.
Jet Blue gets real
If you haven't caught the new reality series Share the Love, it's
probably because you weren't sitting on a Jet Blue flight. The new series, done in partnership with American Express,
is being shown exclusively as an in-flight show on DirecTV. Contestants on the show compete in a cross country race to
win free air miles. I assume they would use those air miles to fly back? Passengers can cast their votes, which
simultaneously makes a contribution to the Boys and Girls Club. Finally, reality TV the way it was meant to be seen:
30,000 feet in the air with a weird kid kicking the back of your seat.Do you vote?
I'm curious about who out there actually participates
in the vote. Or, do you just sit back to watch the performances and wait to see who gets booted? During the first
season of American Idol, I was a passive viewer. I didn't vote once. Not even for Kelly Clarkson in the
finale. During the second season, however, I voted for Clay Aiken like a mad woman. Season 3 didn't really turn my
crank but I did vote regularly during Season 4 for both Carrie and Bo.This season? So far, there's no one who's inspired me to pick up the phone and dial.
Do you call (or text) your vote for American Idol? Why? Who are you voting for this season?
NBC launching online singing competition
To hell with the
airwaves, NBC is creating a web-only show called Star Tomorrow. It's your basic talent contest, where solo
singers and bands will perform and viewers will vote. The winner gets a record deal with Tommy Motola. The only
difference is that this will never air on the NBC network.NBC is currently taking applications in the form of VHS tapes from singers or bands. Producers will narrow the contestants down to 100 and present them in small groups each week this summer. Viewers will have a week to vote on their favorite performer(s) and the winner will move on to the next round.

Conan's Finn didn't win -- UPDATE
She didn't lose, either. Finland President Tarja Halonen, a dead-ringer for American talk show host Conan O'Brien,
received only 46% of the vote in this weekend's election, forcing her into a run-off against a conservative candidate.
Finn laws require the winner to receive at least 50% of the vote.Leading up to the election, there were several articles that expressed some concern among the Finns that Conan's mock-campaign endorsing Halonen would influence the election. I think we can expect to see some more campaigning on Conan's part all week long, assuming he's not in reruns.
